Last Thursday, Windows did an Auto-update on my PC and it was successful, or so I thought. Friday evening, I turned on my PC and the entire display was poor. It was "Safe Mode" quality. Everything was set on the lowest quality settings for Windows: 16 colors and 640 x 480 pixels.

My mouse didn't work, so I used the keyboard to get to the Control Panel and tried to adjust the Display Settings. I went back to the High Color[16 bit] and 800 x 600 pixels. I clicked "OK" and was prompted to restart my PC. I restarted and guess what? The PC started with the same low quality as before. I thought I did something wrong, so I did it again. Same result. So, I tried 4 mores.

I tinkered with my Hardware Acceleration; which is now at its lowest, but still nothing.

I went to System Restore, but since I can't use my mouse, I can't scroll back to a past restore point. Not only that, but I'm hoping that I don't have to do this because then I'd have to re-updating and re-upgrading the programs and etc that I've done since my last restore point.

I can't think of anything else to do to fix this problem, short of tossing the damned thing out the Window Could that be the origin on the program name?. If anyone knows, I'd greatly appreciate it.

No, I don't think that's the origin. That's all I have to contribute to this thread.

Ha ha, just kidding.

First off, you never need to use the mouse in Windows. There's always a key that does it. In this case, we need Tab. Tab goes through each selectable item in the screen one at a time so that you can select the one you need. Do you have Windows XP? If so, when you first get to the calendar thing, Hit Tab once. It will highlight the left arrow on the calendar. If you hit enter, it will then go back a month. When you are on the correct month, you can use the arrow keys to change dates. And of course you use Control-N (the N in next is underlined) to go to the next screen.

I would also suggest going to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and viewing your installation history to try and figure out what caused it to happen.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it very much.

I know that I don't need a mouse to access fuctions on the screen, but I meant to also type that System Restore wasn't helping me go back to a past date via spacebar over the arrow pointing left, to go back to a previous saved point.

But, that's over now because I just got soooo annoyed, I did throw my PC out the Window. Just kidding.

I went to my old system recovery CD-ROM's and fixed it right up, no problem. But again, thank you for your help.

Not sure. I uploaded a pile of videos last night (DivX-encoded .avi files, all ranging from two to five minutes in length) and they showed up in My Videos after about 10 minutes apiece.
