AKA "The hour where the shit is a foot away from the fan"

Have any of the previous seasons entered the final hours with things looking so bleak for *everybody*? I'm really happy for the show because their numbers this season are the best ever and people are getting to see the best season ever (some nitpicks aside).

Was that David Palmer giving Logan a verbatim Sherry Palmer speech? Amazing how much David has changed.

Another week - another awesome Jack Bauer facial expression. Kiefer is good.

Poor Edgar. After everything he's done today, he's gonna be our downfall - and it's not even his fault. Couldn't someone brief him??

About next week's preview...

Buchanan had better watch himself or my girl Action Chloe will smack him down. Besides, she's ready to quit anyway.

After this week I'm starting to wonder if

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
Jack won't get shipped off to China at the end of the season and be busted out of Chinese jail for Day 5 when some terror threat hits East Asia and he works with US intelligence to thwart it. A long shot that has zero chance, but it crossed my mind.

PeterStork -- that thought had crossed my mind as well, and it seems like the only "sensible" way out of this situation.

And just wow. I'm just hanging on for the ride at this point.

Great episode. Subtitles rock. I heard that just prior to the Consulate raid, Kim Bauer had put in an application to work there.

I'm really enjoying Mike Novick again. His words were, "Do you want me to ask President Palmer to leave?" but he was really saying, "Do you really want to fuck this up royally due to your lack of testoserone?" Shh, you are absolutely correct....David is really channeling the ghost of Sherry. He is still miles ahead of her in the integrity department, but that speech could very well have come from her.

Chloe ruled this week...but so did Buchanan. I love Chloe, too, but Bill's line to her about personality disorder was absolutely hilarious. Jack's reaction and facial expression when Chloe offered to talk was priceless, as was Chloe's "idiot" crack to Edgar. Poor fucking Edgar. I'm going out on a limb here and thinking that he'd love for Chloe to call him certain things, but "idiot" would not be one of them.

PeterStork, that is an awesome idea. I think it would add something a little bit different to the show, and after this season, I wonder what kind of terrorism they could do that won't feel like a letdown compared to this season. I mean, they've got a freaking missile and nuclear warhead.

Curtis needs to return next season. He's much more of an asskicker than Chase ever was, and he is credible enough to keep up with Jack's greatness.

Logan is such a dickhead. He does realize that he is the president and some asshole terrorist is about to detonate a nuclear warhead on American soil, right? And he's worried about what the Chinese think? Wow. He really sucks.

To be fair to Logan, they are presenting the situation as an act of war against the Chinese, and such a war could potentially cost many more lives than and individual missle. So there IS a lot riding on that particular relationship.

Also

Spoiler Below: Highlight text to read
In the preview, Logan suggests that they need to evacuate a city, and Mike reacts as if he's being an irrational idiot. I'm sorry, but if a nuclear missle that is in flight toward a city is not a good reason to activate the evacuation plans, then there will never be a good reason to. Assuming that they targeted a large city somewhere in the U.S. , and considering that the missle launch was from Iowa so it's not like it's going to take THAT long to reach its target, evacuation seems not only reasonable, but a responsible course of action, regardless of what other plans have been set in motion. The longer you wait, the more difficult evacuation of a city will be. And you must consider that it is at least a possibility that CTU fails. I'll be curious to what context will be presented, if any, that will make holding off the evacuation seem like a reasonable idea.

Am I the only one considering that the missle could be aimed at China, with the shooting of the consulate by "friendly" fire all a part of Marwan's* greater plan to instigate a US-China war? (* or that of his superiors?)

I think the only problem with that is Marwan would have to know that not only would he go to the Embassy to hide, but that

A.) CTU would find him, and
2.) CTU would fail to extradite him and stage an illegal incursion onto PRC soil.

Getting him into the Embassy wouldn't be hard; he could be a plant. But the idea that they wanted CTU to find him is tough to believe, seeing how they tried to kill Action Chloe to keep the laptop from falling into government hands.

This is all besides the fact that Marwan was going to send a video to the media that said "you wake up to a different world...one of your own missiles has been used against you."

I didn't say it made perfect sense... it was just a theory.

But what would be wrong with Marwan admitting he set the whole war up AFTER it starts? China retaliates against the US, and then the tape surfaces in the media where Marwan talks about the missile being used against us? He basically cripples two nations in one fell swoop.

Given the number of contingency plans and assorted number of plots Marwan has executed throughout the day, I wouldn't put it past him to have set up for the US to find out about the guy hiding at the consulate, and then knowing that the Chinese would delay handing him over, plan for the US to forcefully take him. I admit this is all highly unlikely, but as I said, its just a theory.

Its not that far fetched considering that Marwan has pulled off the most elaborate terrorist attack in history.I have never seen any plan so contingent on random things happening in precise order. Marwan assumed and planned that after kidnapping then beheading the SecDef, and melting down 100+ power plants the President would still head to LA, where Marwan could have him shot down by a Stealth Fighter he had stolenby a disavowed traitorous former AF pilot. Then after shooting it down he played the absolute astronomical odds that he would find the "football" intact amoung the wreckage. He could then take info from the football and use it to detonate a another nuke that his troops had stolen that the US Army had just been leisurely driving down a dirt road in the middle of Iowa hundreds of miles from any major US Army facility. At the end of the show they should make Marwan Secretary of Defense because the man is an absolute genius.

Not to mention the fact that Marwan's former employer, the largest US Defense contractor, helped him tremendously by trying to kill Federal Agents and set off an EMP bomb just to delay the government finding out that Marwan worked there.

The missile they showed shouldn't be able to reach China, but that kind of thing hasn't stopped them from playing fast and loose with how things work in the past this season, so who knows.

My theory is, this season will end with a Secretary of Offense Joe Heller twist relating to a missile defense shield. He did start the season en route to a super secret meeting at an Air Force Base in California, possibly with corporate defense contractors.

Heller involved in the plot clears up some plot problems from earlier this year (like needing a Department of Defense official's codes in addition to the presidential codes to arm the stolen warhead; how Marwan's people knew where Heller was; making it easier to get that F-117; how they knew that Ronnie was able to be killed by conventional weaponry). We'd have to assume that Audrey wasn't in on it and wasn't supposed to be grabbed, so they had to improv a faux escape attempt and had some other plan to not kill Heller on the Internet.

So maybe he's either been part of this to demonstrate that the country needs a working missile defense shield, which would naturally be built by the good people at McLennan-Forrester, or they already have something ready to go that will knock Marwan's stolen missile out and Heller will become a hero and they'll physically throw Logan out of office because he's taken Jimmy Carter's spot of History's Greatest Monster and Heller can replace him or win the next election. And then the season ends with Heller alone in his office, and a giant panel slides back in the wall and there's a huge view-screen and Max the Evil German Guy from Season 2 Who Was Also Behind the Attempts on Palmer In Season 1 is on there and says "You have done well" and Heller kneels down before him and says "Thank you, my master" and the clock runs out.

That's my theory, anyway.

Yeah you are right. Marwan has the ability to see the future and CTU has the ability to teleport people around. Of course Marwan also has teleportation now so who knows what powers CTU will get in exchange.
