    UPN Spears Britney

by John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 4/5/2005 11:55:00 AM

Hit me baby one more time with a Viacom Inc.-backed reality show about a hot young blond singer and her new husband.

Newlyweds Britney Spears and husband Kevin Federline, following in the footsteps of Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey on MTV's Newlyweds, have signed up for a six-episode UPN series for broadcast "later this season."

A UPN spokesman had not returned a call at press time, but if "later this season" means "this season," which is over at the end of May, the show would have to start almost immediately. Since it sounds like primarily a clip show, that could indeed mean a May sweeps run.

Arguably delaying it too long might dampen the burning interest in their enduring love story.

UPN has had success with reality, with America's Top Model its top performer over the past couple of years.

The Spears-Federline series (our working title since UPN did not provide one) will include home videos of their whirlwind courtship and marriage, plus new footage produced by UPN with commentary from the couple that will take viewers on the magical tour of the mystery of love among the young and rich and famous (well, at least half-famous).

MTV or VH1 or both will get to repeat the shows after their UPN broadcast. In fact, to help drive some of those young MTV viewers to UPN, the MTV channels will run a marathon of the first five episodes to promote UPN's broadcast of the finale.

Calling the show "a documentation of love," Spears gushed in a release: "I am now going to be expressing my personal life through art. This series will show us falling in love and all the adventures that went on overseas during the European leg of my Onyx Hotel tour."

I am stunned that a network of such high standards like UPN would agree to air this show.

By the way, has anyone fallen so far so fast as Brittney? If she put out a CD today, would anyone buy it? I mean at least Christina was smart enough to clean herself up and become more presentable and marketable. Brittney has turned into white trash. Or maybe she was always white trash cleverly disguised as a pop star.

I think you're an asshole. No, no, let me correct that, an immature asshole. Which is fine, except that you're marrying my daughter and I'm afraid that my grandchildren are gonna be little assholes.

I think plenty of people would purchase a new Britney disc; she hasn't been out of the spotlight enough for people to scratch their heads, asking who she is.

Now, the Backstreet Boys, on the other hand...I really doubt anyone would buy their stuff. Considering, especially, their four year absence from the musical world.

Don't you think the public is sick of Brittney? I mean she came across as this wholesome girl next door, which was her selling point. And is now on her second marriage and her current husband left his pregnant girlfriend for Brittney. Also, she has been seen in public drinking and smoking. Not that I have a problem with this. It is just not what her image was suppossed to be. And no one is going to take Brittney seriously as anything other than fluff music. I hope her 15 minutes are coming to a close because then my prediction two years ago of her gracing the cover of Playboy by 2007 would be right on.

None of these things matter to anyone under the age of 15, which is her target demo anyway.

Agreed, but her audience of 15 year old three years ago are now 18 and not into her. The 15 year olds coming in are probably more into Usher and Avril than Brittney. Her audience grew up and the new batch coming in don't care or know her. I think her time is up. At least I hope. And if she is preggers, forget it. She's done.

I think she will be famous for the rest of her life, the press will always report on her and always have an interest in what she's doing.

I also don't think her musical popularity had as much to do with marketing as people like to pretend. That first album had some catchy songs. I didn't buy it, but a few of those songs did get stuck in my head, and I tried to force them out with rap. Then the second one had, I believe, one catchy song. The next album didn't have even one. The music got progressively worse, and the sexification of her image didn't help. If she found someone to write songs that are actually good, people would buy it. I don't know who, but somebody.

Hey, she did win a grammy after all.

HMD,

What Grammy did she win? Aguilera won for Best New Artist that year. If she did win, it had to be for some dance song.

I just did a quick check and she has none. Aguildera has three to date. No way Brittney ever wins three, let alone 1.

Uh, did I miss something here? Don't you have those backwards? I'm not exactly TRL's number one fan, but from what I've seen, X-tina hasn't been presentable in a couple of years. She's been downright filthy (some might call her Dirrty, I suppose). Meanwhile, Britney has fully-embraced trying to be super sexy instead of somewhere between being sexy and being the wholesome girl next door. Methinks you just have some sort of vendetta against her.

You have missed something, I guess. Christina has since moved on from the X-tina "dirrty" raunch style of dress and has gone towards a more Marilyn Monroe-ish style.

StingArmy,

please see WhiteBacon's response. Aguilera has cleaned herself up nice and has that calssic Hollywood look going. As my vendetta against Brittney, it is not just her, it is any singer who gets by on looks and marketing that can not sing a lick. Ashley Simpson, I am looking at you too.

Since you didn't say "good" looks, I guess I can let this slide.

I've seen it three on stage and four times in the theaters. Keith has me beat. Loved it EXCEPT for Anne Hathaway. I was annoyed by her performance, honestly.
