Well, the summer movie season unofficially kicks off this weekend with the release of two films that may not be bonafide "event" films but will probably bring some people out to see them in Kingdom Of Heaven and Crash. So, I figured there's no better time than now to start the seemingly annual Summer Movie Preview Thread.

Opening Friday, May 6th:
KINGDOM OF HEAVEN [D: Ridley Scott; Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons; It's the Crusades, done Gladiator-style.]
CRASH [D: Paul Haggis; Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Ryan Phillipe, many others; Ensemble drama dealing with racism. Great reviews so far.]
HOUSE OF WAX [D: Jaume Collet-Serra; Elisha Cuthbert, Paris Hilton; Remake of old horror film about wax sculptures that come to life.]

Not to be judgmental... ah, hell, never mind....

There's a whole lotta' crap-ola coming out this summer.

Let's see... remake of The Honeymooners, or the remake of Bewitched, or the remake of The Longest Yard, or the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or remake The Bad News Bears, or the remake of Dukes of Hazzard.

Some of these "remakes" were actual GOOD MOVIES TO BEGIN WITH!!! The TV shows, okay... well, there's some "hey, it's funny when we're stoned" potential, and that's fun for some folks.

I know! The Deuce Bigelow sequel! That'll save cinema as we know it! Huzzah!!!

Man, there are a lot of remakes this year. That said, I think the film that intrigues me the most is Crash. I might be looking foreward to some movies more than it, but Crash is written and directed by Paul Haggis (anybody who's seen Due South will understand why this would get my attention) and they've been showing a short clip of it on TNT during Law & Order that makes it look pretty interesting.

Color me excited for Star Wars and Batman Begins, which will probably be the only two movies I'll go out of my way to see in theaters this summer.

I'm slightly excited about the Chocolate Factory remake, and Valiant might be fun, since I like Chicken Run.

Overall, other than the two big ones, it seems like kind of a "blah" summer. Fortunately the two big ones, particularly Star Wars, I'm PSYCHED about.

The only one I'm looking forward to is "Kicking and Screaming." Though I might check out "The Longest Yard."

Lets see, midnight showing tickets for the Emagine digital projector after waiting in line overnight? Check.

Tailgate party in the parking lot while waiting in line to be seated? Check.

Nerds from all around Detroit flocking to said tailgate? Check.

Is this nerd excited for a Star Wars movie that may actually top Empire? CHECK.

You know, I usually leave people alone when they express some kind of hope for Revenge, but if you actually think that it's going to be better than Empire, you sir, are out of your mind.

Check the name, I'm psychotic. But lets check the evidence...

Revenge HAS to have:

1) Anakin versus Obi-Wan
2) The Emperor asserting some form of dominance
3) The Empire forming
4) The beginnings, if not all, of the Jedi Purge
5) The Birth of the Twins

I won't spoil anyone, but for those who've seen the trailer and especially for those who went to the big convention, Celebration III in Indianapolis a week or so ago, with the footage Lucas has put out right now the journey in between those five points is not going to be a series of clunkers like the fireplace scene from Episode 2. This movie has SERIOUS potential.

I'm really looking forward to "War of the Worlds" ... Because as Freeway said, the last time Cruise & Spielberg hooked up, it was pretty damn cool.

Hopefully the War of the Worlds will be a hell of a lot more logical than Minority Report.

How can you not have NIGHT WATCH listed there. Not only will this film be Lions Gate Films biggest moneymaker to date, but it'll prove to be this years Fellowship Of The Rings... YES, NIGHT WATCH looks THAT good. Be warned though, it's one drawback is that it's russian and I think they've dubbed it.

As for the rest of the summer... it does look like Hollywood's got some catching up to do, they're dragging behind something like 30% of where they were at this time last year, box office wise.

LAND OF THE DEAD is probably my #1 pick for the summer as I've been waiting for it for over a decade now and it's about damn time it got made.

BATMAN BEGINS can't be any worse then the last two BATMAN films, I hope. FANTASTIC FOUR will be fun to watch but I have a really bad feeling about it, like it's probably gonna suck and bomb at the same time. WAR OF THE WORLDS should be pretty damn loud and fun, it's got dumbed down popcorn film written all over it.

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN looks like last years KING ARTHUR... and I really Liked KING ARTHUR. I just don't think I can buy Orlando Bloom as a lead guy yet and I don't think the rest of the country will either. If it squeeks past $11 million it's first week, I'll be surprised.

MINDHUNTERS 'finally' sees the light of day, wasn't I looking forward to this film 2 years ago or so. What the hell happened?

STAR WARS... I'm torn. I wanna go see it and I'll probably enjoy it a lot, but after the horrendous PHANTOM MENACE and the slightly better then RETURN OF THE JEDI, ATTACK OF THE CLONES... I'm not that hopeful for it.

MR. AND MRS. SMITH could do well and it looks promising... hopefully it'll be better then the last time Brad Pitt was paired with a screen diva, THE MEXICAN, which also looked good before people actually saw it. I was reading that the studio was NOT doing any press showing of it, which is NEVER a good sign.

Lastly, be sure to check out ABC's HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS Saturday for the first look at what should be the 'End-All-Be-All' of Disney's live action film making experience. YES! The trailer for THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE will be premiering during the telecast. The film doesn't come out till December 9th though. Disney is going all gangbusters with this one. They're simulcasting the trailer on ABC, The DISNEY Channel, ABC FAMILY (Is THAT what they're calling it now?), STARZ and then it's being shown around the world in almost EVERY country. It'll be put online at AOL and Verizon Wireless Cell Phones will be barraged with the trailer for it. You gotta hand it to them... NO ONE does advertisement like Disney.

EDIT: AWW HELL! Stupid me went and did something dumb like visit the STAR WARS web site... THIS looks fucking awesome! Go take a little peek at a music video for the movie, like they did for Duel Of The Fates. This makes that look like complete ass! Here's the link http://www.starwars.com/episode-iii/release/trailer/10.html ... SO GOOD!

Holy crap! Do you mean $11 million its first day? You can't possibly mean $11 million during its entire run.

Originally set for a domestic theatrical release in 2003 and then early 2004; the film was pushed back again to 4 June 2004 secondary to numerous positive test screenings to facilitate an improved marketing campaign that included new theatrical posters and an official website. After Dimension Films and Miramax sustained two massive waves of layoffs, the film languished in the studio's vault in limbo for a sustained period of time, practically forgotten.

Cerebus HAS to be kidding with the Narnia trailer. So not only will I get a first look at the biggest movie released on my birthday (HP:GOF) during the COS movie, but I get to see Narnia adapted as well. That is pretty damn cool.

Anyone else buying the conspiracy theory that Katie "Beard" Holmes and Tom Cruise only are hooked up in order to cross-promote their upcoming summer blockbusters?

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopkeeper and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really, but sure enough I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.--- Del Preston

WhoawhoawhoawhoawhoawhoaWHOA: Herbie TALKS in the upcoming movie!? SACRILEGE!

Hmmm...doesn't seem to, according to the flick's website. But they did give him a spoiler and pivoting headlights for the appearance of eyelids...weird.

Oh, and Matt Dillon getting the Thorndyke oil-in-the-face treatment...classic.

CRAP - they're canning COLD CASE? I love that show. The music was great, and it had some great camera work. The cast was pretty cool, too. Oh well. There are too many of those police dramas on TV...but why couldn't they can CRIMINIAL MINDS instead?
