Not a bad pickup for the Pats. I like him as a backup to brady a lot more than Rohan Davey.

you can never go wrong with Doug Flutie on your team.

Good signing for the Pats, and shame on the Chargers for letting him go.

Doug Flutie was my idol in high school. I even wore #22 as a WR/DB in young football playing-lad. It is awesome that he's back with the Pats...

...now may he NEVER step on the field for a MEANINGFUL play as a Patriot.

AFter reports this week that he may have gone to the Giants, I was excited. Now that he's a Patriot again, screw em!

Just kidding. Its good that he hooked on someplace. He is still better than 1/3 the starting QBs in the league.

Flutie is probably better than some current backup quarterbacks in the league. I don't think he's better than Rivers or Brees, and the Chargers need to look to the future. There is no way he's better than 1/3 of the current starting QBs. Care to make a list?

People still get excited for Flutie, which is great for him. It's not going to make me regret the fact that the Chargers made the correct move.

It's funny, because I've seen this same enthusism before. Hopefully you never see him on the field for your team, because the reality of Flutie is nowhere near as fun as the myth.

I've really liked the little bits I've seen from Rohan Davey. Does this signing mean that the Pats would be looking/willing to move him, or will they keep him on as a third-stringer?

"He is the most overrated piece of crap in the league. He bitched and whined after he got his ass beaten in New England last year, so the NFL changed the rules. Then he got his ass beaten in New England again. Every year he's the top MVP candidate. Every year he's supposed to be the best. Every year he's going to carry the Colts to the Super Bowl. And every single year he goes to New England and gets his ass beaten. And his brother's a whiny little bitch." -A friend of mine, on Peyton Manning

I won't argue about him being better than Brees or Rivers. Chargers did make he right move. As for QB's he's better than, I think Flutie is better than the QB's on these teams:

Buffalo
Baltimore
Cincy
Oakland
Dallas
Washington
Chicago
Detroit
NO
TB
Arizona

That's 11 of the 30 teams. Slightly over the 1/3rd mark Stagger commented on.

I wouldn't say that Flutie's better than Kurt Warner, and do you really think Trent Dilfer or Luke McCown in Cleveland is better?

I also strongly disagree with your assessment that Flutie is better than Carson Palmer.

In a way, I'm glad he didn't sign along with brother Darren in Hamilton. No way Toronto needs that aggravation just down the QEW. Still, it would have been nice to see a battle of the ages with Doug Flutie against Damon Allen.

Flutie of three years ago that competed with Rob Johnson in Buffalo maybe, but not now. Even if you assume he hasn't lost a step in three years, I still wouldn't take him over Brian Griese (TB), Carson Palmer (Cincy), Kurt Warner (Arizona), Drew Bledsoe (Dallas), Mark Brunnell (Washington) or maybe even Jeff Garcia and Joey Harrington (both Detroit). Take into account the fact that he's now an old(er) man, and I say he falls below Rex Grossman (Chicago), Aaron Brooks (NO) and Rich Gannon and Kerry Collins (both Oakland).

Look, the man is 42 years old. He's done some amazing things, with The Pass against Miami being one the greatest moments in college football history. I'll even concede that he probably could have been a very good NFL quarterback if given more of a chance while he was younger. But what's done is done and don't let the "legend" behind Flutie blind you into ever hoping to see him play for a team you have any interest in ever seeing win.

Pennington BEFORE his rotator cuff injury or after? Because right now, he may not have an arm at all.

Guru....You think Brees would have done so well last year if it wasn't for Flutie showing him the ropes, keeping him on his toes. Flutie is still a very capable QB at the age of 42. I would be more then confident having him taking snaps in a crucial game. At 42!!!! That alone is amazing.

Better than Warner? yes.

Sorry, I got Cleveland and Cincy mixed up. Drop Cincy and add Cleveland. That's still 11 teams.

I'd say it was more 1) A go-to receiver like Antonio Gates, 2) the abandonment of "Marty-ball", 3) the fact that all his pressure to perform went away once they got Rivers, and 4) it was his 3rd year. QBs take a while to figure everything out in this game.

Not to knock Flutie, because I like the guy too, but at this stage in his career, he is an above-average backup, and nothing more.

17 posts in this thread? That's a lot of activity for a guy who'll be lucky to see 17 snaps all year. Remember who New England's starter is, after all. It's not like he's being brought in to create a quarterback controversy.

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopkeeper and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really, but sure enough I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.--- Del Preston

Yeah, but don't forget that Flutie took every opportunity possible to throw Brees under the bus before last year, when Brees played so well that not even Flutie could gripe about not getting to play.

Look, Flutie's a decent backup and an okay spot starter a couple times a year. But he's also a team-killer because he'll never take any blame on himself and constantly point out how he'd do things better than the starter.

I would actually like to see Chris Redman step show some of that potential that many said he had in Baltimore and just get away from Flutie altogether. Flutie might still have some game left, but he really belongs on a team without much hope.

Flutie is fun in that backyard football kind of way, but to really be affective in NE you need to stick to the game plan whether you are the punter or the QB. I don't see him making the team, but he will be helpful in camp.
