Microsoft's taking a big loss on the systems, but aren't they making it back now that Live has taken off? I kinda got bored of the dev stuff for those systems a while back, so I haven't been keeping up with all the daily news, but I remember reading a while back that Live was turning things around for Microsoft. At least enough to get their foot in the door big time for the next generation.

And for the record, I much prefer the PS2 controller to the Gamecube one.

The only thing Nintendo did wrong with the Gamecube is the lack of an Online mode. Nintendo thought that was not was gamers wanted and they were dead wrong. Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, Mario Party, Zelda: Four Swords, Wario Ware, Smash Brothers - All could've been online games and they would've sold millions. If Nintendo had gone with an Online strategy this generation I believe they would easily have been neck and neck with Sony's sales, leaving Microsoft pretty much in the dust.

Ok first, no. I mean really no. Microsoft does lose money on every Xbox sold, but they make it up by selling WAY more than Nintendo does and thus selling way more games that make them a ton of money. Nintendo adding online play would have helped, but do you not see a bit of a kiddie theme in all those games you listed? Of course they are still awesome games, but older gamers want games that don't look like cartoons all the time. You have to have more than just Mario being online. Not to mention it would have been hard for Nintendo and Sony to leave Microsoft in the dust considering that the Xbox is, on a month to month basis, selling as many or more than the PS2 since about last October.

As to the controllers, I agree. There isn't a thing wrong with the Gamecube controller. The C-stick should probably just be more like the regular stick, but other than that it provides perfect control and I love it. The S controller is fine, but I hate the white and black button placement. hard to use those. Sony's controller is pretty much great too.

Erm, you sure about all those no's?

From here (msnbc.msn.com): "Microsoft said the company's home and entertainment division, which includes games and the Xbox video game console system, posted its first profitable quarter on sales of its hit game Halo 2. But the company said the division probably would be back in the red for the rest of the fiscal year and would not achieve sustained profitability until sometime in fiscal 2007."

Microsoft makes up their money not by outselling Nintendo, but rather by also having an Office and a Windows division...

Do you have numbers on the install base though? Microsoft is selling more, but that's only because the PS2 has been near saturation for a while. The only people purchasing PS2's now are the extreme hold outs or people suffering from broken systems.

Edit/Update:

From a more recent report (gamespot.com):

"For the quarter ending March 31, 2005, Microsoft's game group lessened its operating loss to $154 million (from $209 million the same quarter a year ago). The group reported revenues of $593 million, a 12 percent increase due primarily to Xbox sales."

So yeah, MS ain't making money on the games, even though they are improving. (which, for what its worth, is where they want to be)
