I have been thinking that Edge's big push has been an utter failure. They couldn't get him over as a serious tough guy, so they apparently have reverted to the smart ass/too cool gimmick. I thought his "Everybody Yell You Suck at Angle Promo" from SmackDown was lame. Didn't they say the reason no one took him or Christian seriously was because of the comedy bits? Well as a result of the WWF's recent trend of breaking up all the good tag teams into singles competitors (another great by-product of the brand extension), the tag division is awful & mid-card is now bloated with boring match ups (i.e. Albert vs Scotty). I think Edge is an excellent wrestler with a bright future, but he seems to be missing "it". With so many championship caliber wrestlers out of the main event mix right now (Angle, Jericho, Booker T, Rock), I just don't see room on this tier for Edge.

Actually, Nick, I always thought that Edge would do better as a smartass (and I wouldn't necessarily call it a "Too Cool"-esque gimmick) than as a serious tough guy. Given the right material, the guy can be ABSOLUTE GOLD on the mic. Need examples? Look at the "Billy Bitchcakes" promo and the X-Pac "character development" promo. Edge could truly get himself over in his own right, IMO, if he gets back to cutting those funny, smart-aleck smark-shoot promos and then merely backing it up in the ring.

i totally agree with you nickbonkwinkelfan. Personally, I have never cared for edge.
The fact that he continually gets put over his opponents bothers the heck out of me.
He is a poor mans HHH as far as Im concerned. Sure this guy will get an occasional
chuckle out of me,but so does Al Snow. And i dont see him getting pushed up the card.

Edge's promo problem is that he takes too damn long to set up the joke (kind of Bill Cosby style). Angle, Rocky, etc. can keep your attention on the mic even if they really aren't saying anything more than "I'm great, I'm going to kick your ass." With Edge, it's like he takes a million years to set up up a one-liner that may or may not work, and completely loses the crowd in the meantime. He needs to work on getting over with little 10-20 second mic segments, instead of his current repetoire of either "say nothing and make a crazy face" or "try to set up an overly-complicated smarky joke for 5 minutes."

I'll be blunt: Edge does really suck as of late. I can't honestly say if it's more his fault or the writers', but he's definitely gotta tighten things up before his ass gets lost in the shuffle!

i think edge is doing great. if they get him into a long-ish feud with one of the top tier players he could easily break through. they're rekindling his history with angle and that's a good, good thing. i hear the crowd being into him. apparently we're just looking for two different things.

as for "angle, jericho, booker t and the rock" being out of the main event mix - huh? angle and jericho are both focused on the title. booker t has never been a title threat in the wwf and only had one ppv (singles) main event - which he lost. rock's out promoting his movie - you got that much right.

Dude, I feel like Edge has been in longish feuds with EVERYONE since his big push and all of them have been boring as hell. I know this statement is a total generalization, but dammit, Edge is boring. What's his character, anyway? He's just Edge. But what does an Edge do? He has long hair, wears a slicker, slides into the ring and occasionally freaks out and punches people or cuts funny promos.
How many of those guys do we need in the WWF?
And why in the blue hell, of all of the awesome talents in the WWF, did the front office choose Edge for a push? They gave him KOTR, the IC Championship and both did nothing for him in the eyes of the fans.
I'm so glad he's on Smackdown.
And what the hell does his song say? It sounds like "Weeeellll in my DURANGO, summer '95. Take me to your home-based business I'm in denial."

I actually think the whole "Durango # 95" reference is a nod to "A Clockwork Orange". The song title (at least on the Rob Zombie album version) refers to "Red red kroovy", which is droog-speak for blood.

Now that's something I'd like to see: Edge dressed like Alex and beating up people with a cane. I don't think they could let him do the whole in-out in-out routine, though. And then they'd have to do an angle where he is rendered a helpless victim through psychological warping, and thus gets his ass kicked in every match. That way BOTH halves of the WWF can have a Booker T.

a clockwork orange gimmick would rule!

the only longish feud i remember edge being in was with william regal. they went three ppvs (i think). the edge and christian break up didn't even last that long (the build up did, but not the pay off). beyond that, there was a ppv with booker and some stuff with angle.

i just don't think the angle's been right for him. putting him in the mix with kurt and jericho was good this week. edge / jericho's a fresh match up and could be a great program.

I agree that Edge is taking way too long to set up his jokes. He kind of sounds like Jericho when he was a face, but not as funny and not nearly as athletic.

As the last post said, Edge IS Jericho's babyface persona. Hell, Angle even said so on SmackDown! in a roundabout way. That character certainly never got Jericho anywhere. Edge is just plain bland. His look is totally incongruous with his attitude. He's still running around with this goth look when he's supposed to be this "totally gnarly Spicoli-type smart-ass." He needs a complete gimmick overhaul (except for his music which I think works for him). He needs what every WWF superstar needs, motivation. He has "zero" right now. What's his point for existing? To be a smart-ass? Why then? He is just as stale as he said X Pac was a year ago. He's the same character he was playing during the E&C days. Austin, Rock, HHH, Angle, even Jericho all have a purpose. I dare someone to tell me what Edge's purpose is other than to bore to death with his cookie-cutter matches that almost always lack anything resembling emotion.

What makes HHH the "undisputed WWF champion" if no one was ever disputing it in the first place?

Edge is sure getting a HUGE King of the Ring push. Not only is his as stale as X-Pac as someone mentioned, he is Billy Gunning the KOTR push. The WWF is putting a ton of effort trying to get this guy over, but nothing seems to be really working. I have a feeling if he can't get over against Angle, then his push may very well stall out.

If the WWF put this much effort into RVD, Booker T or even Raven they would be over huge by now.

Jesus, you must be pretty damn big. According to his WWF bio, Edge is 6-4, 240. If you were in a grocery store and saw him, 10-1 he'd be bigger than anyone else in the store. Just because he isn't bigger than HHH doesn't mean he isn't bigger than 98% of normal Americans.

Okay no, I'm not quite that big. But without looking at his WWF bio, I would never ever have guessed that he's listed at 6'4" 240. He just looks like a toothpick with muscle definition. Maybe that's mere a perception thing compared to other WWF superstars, but again, my thinking still applies. He doesn't look like he could kick anyone's ass.

all the huge freaks in the fed really skew the perception. it's like that rodney dangerfield joke - "wanna look thin? hang out with fatter people".

98%? come on Moe. I'm 6'5" 290, and I'm the second smallest male in the family. Most of the guys i hang with are over 6 feet and over 250 lbs, then again a lot of these guys are construction workers and bouncers, so that may not be the best example...

Big Daddy: That was cool. The very guy who coined the term "Billy Bitchcakes" is "Billy Gunn"-ing the push he's recieved. Irony is never a bad thing, it's a GREAT thing!

Now, while Edge is undeniably a "pretty boy", I wouldn't say he looks like a wimp. I mean, he does look like he could lay some hurt on some guys. Not necessarily in a fist fight, but with aerial moves. What they really need to do is relegate the spear to one of his regular (but still hard hitting) moves. He's already got a decent unique submission, but the Spear just isn't convincing (to me) when Edge does it. Let him start doing that reverse russian legsweep again (yeah, I forgot the name. so sue me), that was a pretty good finisher that just disappeared into the ether.

OK, just because I'm anal about this shit I looked it up. Plus, coming from a fairly short family myself (at 5'9" I'm the tallest male in the family) I thought maybe my perspective was skewed. I found:

They only have it by sex and race (not all Americans lumped together) BUT

white males are the tallest out of any sex/race catagory AND

25 years of age is (on average) the tallest age AND

95% of 25-year-old white males are shorter than 6'2"

So I don't think it's much of a stretch to say that 98% of Americans (I'll even say American men) are shorter than 6'4"

Of course, there isn't much of a chance Edge is REALLY 6'4" The WWF is worse than the NBA when it comes to this.

Damn ECA, do you come from a family of Lumberjacks or something?

BDC, the size of the wrestlers doesn't really matter anymore, I mean jeez look at Jericho, Benoit, Angle, RVD, etc.

It takes persona + push + talent + heart = success

Umm... it wasn't even a year ago when RVD was main eventing AND a major component of the Heel Austin/Face Angle feud. He's the IC champ now. He's a spokeman for 7-11.

Guess what, he IS over huge

Booker T had high profile feuds with Austin & the Rock. He gets actual script to read and the "Spinerooni" gimmick never fails to get a pop.

Guess what, he IS over huge, too.

Raven... well... some guys are just born mid-carders.

The fact is, if Edge wasn't getting a push, you'd all be whining about mid-guys never getting a shot. How about one post that says, "Gee, thank God Edge is getting a chance against a major leaguer. This 'Brand extension' system really is allowing more people to shine! The WWF is actually doing the right thing for once! Come on, now... give it a try. You'll like it. It feels good.

I have this episode on my DVR. It'll take some work, but I'll try to sync it up with your commentary, CRZ. I watched a little of it over the weekend. Willie Mack's finisher is just a tad overcomplicated.
