The brother-in-law and sister-in-law are in town, and we went out to dinner and of course they were LATE, which would've been OK except that our waitress disappeared for ten minutes at the WORST time, meaning we all rolled back into the home at 8:10 pm, so this edition of "American Idol" is joined IN PROGRESS...

...as Ryan is getting absolutely molested by the judges as he tries to introduce Bo Bice. At least he let us in on the theme: songs from your birth year. THAT's certainly a random one.

Bo's going to sing "Freebird". I'm getting kind of annoyed that he's going for these safe choices, and while this is good, I'm fairly underwhelmed. Randy thinks Bo could remake "Freebird" and have a #1 hit?! He must be taking some of Paula's stash, although Paula's "see you in the finals" comment is the most lucid thing she's said in three weeks.

Anwar's after Bo and he chooses "I Know I'll Never Love This Way Again". First Chaka Khan, now Dionne Warwick? 'Kay. This is actually a LOT better, one of Anwar's stronger performances, and now he's had two good weeks in a row. Getting sent to the bottom three might have been the best thing to happen to him.

Anthony Fedorov is up next with "Every Time You Go Away". I wish HE'd go away. Ryan was in the crowd with Hall & Oates, and mentioned that Daryl Hall wrote that song. I did not know that. Actually, Sergei started out a little bit shaky, but this turned out pretty good. I don't know if it will hold up as one of the better performances tonight, but it's definitely one of HIS better ones. Walking and singing at the same time is something he needs to stay away from, though.

Vonzell is after Sergei and she's going with "Let's Hear It for the Boy", as we all make the "Chris Penn dancing on the farm"-reference. I wonder what he thinks when he looks back at "Footloose", anyway. Probably "I got paid well for that". And "who knew SJP was going to be a hottie?" Anyway, this was pretty good, although I thought she was singing a half-beat slower that the band was playing at times, and you could tell this wasn't one of those "songs she's sung a million times", like her Whitney song was a couple of weeks ago.

Scott Savol follows Vonzell and he's singing "She's Gone" by Hall & Oates, WITH Hall & Oates in the crowd. I wonder if he knew that was going to happen, and it doesn't SOUND like he did, because he starts out VERY badly, but when he gets to the "She's GONE, oh WHY"-chorus he gets all mad (like he'd maybe throw a phone if he had one?) and emotional and REALLY GOOD. Of course, there's a second verse in there, which he sings horribly, then it's back to the chorus, which is again quite good. That was right out of Anwar's playbook, actually, only worse than Anwar ever did it. Simon notes that many of the notes were out of tune, and Scott gives him some lip, which I HATE, and I think Scott's feeling cocky since he made it through last week.

Carrie is singing "Love Is a Battlefield" and looking stalker-worthy in a shimmer black tank top and tight jeans. Mmmmmmmmm. And she sounds AWESOME. That week she sang the Heart-song gave her massive confidence which she shows here. She flubs the words (after referring to forgetting the words in her intro video) but covers nicely. The SIL said since she didn't know the words she had no idea Carrie messed them up. The only bad thing is she tries to hit a couple of power notes at the end and they are way off. She mentions during the judges' comments that she was trying to not be "boring", and she certainly did that.

Constantine is going to close the show with..."Bohemian Rhapsody"? WTF? Seriously, WTF? Actually, he sings PARTS of "Bohemian Rhapsody", skipping the beginning and MOST of the middle. According to my CD, he sung the parts from 0:56 to 1:50-ish and from about 4:10 to 4:50, then the last three lines. If you're going to sing Bohemian EFFING Rhapsody, sing the damn song, or at least HALF of the song. Geez.

Apparently we missed Nadia's rendition of "When I Dream", which helps at least partially explain why the judges like Bo so much. From the replay it sounded like she was most likely the worst of the lot this week.

I think Carrie is the most talented of the group, but this was not her best week. She started well, but it kinda fell off there at the end.

I don't think Constatnine was horrible, but when you take out most of the song like you mention, it des defeat the purpose.

If we could get rid of Anwar AND Scott, we'd be in good shape.

I complained to another Liberal friend about some of the Left’s tone concerning the 2004 elections. I thought it insulting to hear those “red state” voters caricatured as red-necked rubes. My friend asked, “Well, don’t you think that people who live in large urban areas, who travel and read and speak other languages are better able to make informed choices?” It turns out it is superiority, not familiarity, which breeds contempt. - Pat Sajak

Nadia was horrible. Awful song choice. Plodding and bereft of life. She should be packing her bags with her awful facing making and crappy song selection.

Anthony was WAY WAY better than I expected. When they said he song choice, I was thinking it would be a car wreck. But he really sang the best he ever has.

Anwar is safe and boring. I like his voice, but he really needs to show some spark or something.

The low parts on Scott's version of "She's Gone" were mind-numbingly bad. I think the good choruses outweighed the bad parts overall, but still, come on.

Carrie is the best singer of the whole lot. Easily.

Bo's version of "Freebird" stunk. He's been coasting for three weeks and he might be in the bottom three this week.

Vonzell was oversinging, but okay.

I thought Constantine did a pretty nice job. My wife thought he sounded good. I thought the band made him sound better than he really was.

My bottom three: Nadia, Scott and Bo, with Nadia saying "ta ta for now."

I didn't think Nadia's singing was horrible, but I did NOT like the song. I haven't felt that close to self-harm since Jewel's last CD.

If Constantine was going to do Queen, he played it smart by NOT doing the parts that would've been out of his range. I agree though...a different song would have been a better choice rather than chopping one up.

I liked Carrie vocal wise, it made up for the word flub.

I also liked Vonzell a lot...she can't be in the bottom three this week.

As for Scott....I don't think the strong chorus made up for how truly, truly bad the two verses were. Plus the "irony" of his interview about being the real "rocker" in the group and then doing a Hall & Oates tune???

As for Hall & Oates...did they looked baked or what? When they panned back to them after Scott sang I was expecting to see a bag of Cheetos or some Twinkies in their hands.

I expect Scott to go this week, with him, Nadia, and possibly Anthony in the bottom three.

Ok, Not impressed with this week either, I feel it's been lacking, and Nikko getting the boot the week before doesn't help. This is how I had them ranked (my bias towards Carrie and against Connie included)...

1. Carrie (as far as I'm concerned, she can do no wrong)
2. Scott (nice rebound from last week, his issues last week must have affected him)
3. Vonzell (had Fantasia not won last year, she'd probably look better in comparison)
4. Anthony (he should have went last week, but he had a nice rebound, and should be safe this week, at least IMO)
5. Bo (just when I'm tiring of the Southern Rock sound, he busts out a Skynyrd song, expand man...expand)
6. Nadia (She got bumped once Vonzell did her thing, and since Con will never get voted off...she's probably the one.)
7. Anwar (I would figure a music teacher would have better taste in music, Chaka Khan and Dionne Warwick, WTF)
8. Connie (No one...absolutely no one should sing a Queen song, but Freddie Mercury. I shed a tear when he butchered that song...please send him home)

I just don't know how Con stays around week to week, but he will forever hold a spot at the bottom for me.

Nadia - every time she makes that face I can't help but think "Who stepped on a duck ?"

Connie - terrible job on the song and he was just overly dramatic with the face making and the hair tossing

Carrie - not great but who cares - she got more votes because of the back of her shirt

Bo - please do not sing "Freebird" again

Vonzell - she's safe but that's about it

Anwar - I missed him when one of the little dunks called downstairs that she needed a cup of water

Sergei Fedorov - loved the song back in the 80's - used to have the vinyl - the grandma's will keep him around another week

Scott - I have 2 words for you - "Shut Up !!!" Oh yeah and I have 2 more words for you - "You Suck !!!"

Nadia, Scott and Connie should be in the bottom 3 but the way things have been going, who knows ?

Nadia continues to amuse me with her faces, but never with her voice. This week, I’m hoping people will finally get over her and her afro and get rid of her. Crystal Gail?? Crystal Gail?? Hell, I was born in 1977 and could have sung a much better song.

Anwar is back to his niche- Don’t make a mistake on the low parts and nail your high notes. We gotcha. Last night, he was actually pretty good. I enjoyed him very much, but I can’t help but to hate his song choices. His best performances seem to be songs originally performed by woman. I wish he’d stop that because I’m waiting for him to sing “I’m Every Woman” new week.

Anthony was surprisingly good last night. Other than the fact that it made me feel ‘old’ because I remember being in third grade when that song came out, he did “Everytime You Go Away” justice. I groaned when I heard that he was going to sing that because I had such low expectations, but he was pretty good.

I made a joke yesterday afternoon, before ‘Idol’, that Bo would break out some Skynyrd and he did it last night. Problem is, without me even knowing what the theme would be, I predicted what song or what type of song he’d do. He’s not stepping away from the typecast that the judges placed on him. “Freebird” is a classic and he didn’t do it well. It wasn’t even okay.

I loved Vonzell last night, even though she hasn’t mastered the art of dancing, walking and singing at the same time. Her voice got weak and shaky when she walked downstage and up the steps behind the judges. I loved her song choice and she enjoyed singing it, so I was pleased.

“Yipes!” Is all I can say about Scott singing “She’s Gone”. I wasn’t impressed by it. I mean, he has some talent, but maybe the stress/attention from his past is getting to him. I used to like that song a lot. And take if easy on Hall & Oates… If someone came on national tv and sang your song, sounding like crap, you wouldn’t tell them so either… Scott butchered an otherwise great song. The chorus is what saved his ass.

My picks for the Final Two are:

Constantine because just when I decided that I wouldn’t like him, he salvaged himself. I wanted to not like him, but every week he does something great. I hated that he had to cut up “Bohemian Rhapsody” too, but I’m amazed that he got away with the first two lines. When he first said that he was going to sing it, I just knew that they would. Great performance once again. Not bad for a guy with a butt on his chin.

This wasn’t Carrie’s best performance to me. While she still sounds great, I just wasn’t feeling it. She kind of sounded like she was off at the end of each verse, going into the chorus. She wasn’t that great last night, but her previous great performances will keep her out of the bottom three.

I think the bottom three are: Anwar. Scott and Vonzell and maybe Scott will go home tonight.

Anthony Federov is now the guy who is just okay, but the fans flock to them for some reason unknown to sane people. They stay around longer than they should and the really talented people get booted because of their fans. Think Nikki McKibban, Jasmine Trias, and Josh Gracin. Ugh! He’ll make it to the Top Three….

Nick Rivers- Listen to me Hillary. I'm not the first guy who fell in love with a woman that he met at a restaurant who turned out to be the daughter of a kidnapped scientist only to lose her to her childhood lover who she last saw on a deserted island who then turned out fifteen years later to be the leader of the French underground.

Hillary Flammond- I know. It all sounds like some bad movie.

As I was watching the show, I was thinking that I had never been right in predicting who was leaving, much less all three of the lowest votegetters. I will take great pleasure in gloating Mr. American Idol JJD at my uncanny predicticating abilities.

See ya, Nadia!

I *did* say that Nadia was the worst of the lot. I've given up predicting the bottom three as "America" and I tend to see things completely differently.

I'm an unabashed Carrie mark, but I'm afraid that's what will kill her. I think people are going to start hating on Carrie simply because she is so popular and awesome (kinda like people do with Hulk Hogan, or even the Rock). When Simon told her she would win and sell more "reck-chords" than all the other winners, I cringed because that could be her kiss of death. Stupid people at home are thinking, "I'll show her! If that Simon likes her, we'll just get rid of her! I'm voting for that hippie!"
I hope she pulls it off, but I have trouble believing the same crowd that does not vote Scott and Sergei off the show will have sense enough to choose the talented, sexy blonde who actually has a chance for a career.

That would go COMPLETELY against what's happened the last two years, though, as both Ruben and Fantasia were Simon's favorites to win from very early on. He's not having much success getting Sergei and Scott kicked off, however, compared to the last couple of years where negative comments from Simon seemed to be the kiss of death.

Eh, it's not that much different than when he was trying to get the redheaded crooner kicked off last year, he liked him for a couple of weeks, then tried his damndest to get him knocked off.
