Logic is as mythical as morals, elves, or faeries. Is it logical, in the United States, land of diversity, to have civil rights? I don't think anyone on this board is against civil rights, or supports a totalitarian government. However, I don't think anyone can prove, logically, that our citizens should have the most basic of rights. If you think otherwise, feel free to offer a counter-argument. Or, if you like, logically convince me that we should outlaw murder.

Well I would first say that if logic is mythical, then do we have to accept what you are saying about logic as a logical argument? If we do, then apparently there is more to logic than myth. You see the problem inherent in what you just said?--it contradicts itself. I agree with many others throughout time that there are things you simply have to affirm through *intuition* in order to make sense of the world, things you basically have to assume. This is what the Founders did when they held it as "self evident" that all men are created equal. I think intuition is a great and reliable way of discovering truth. *You* would actually bear the burden of proof by claiming there are no such things as logic, human rights and moral laws against murder, IMHO.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner.

I was going to offer my thoughts, but this got way too confusing for me. "Well I would first say that if logic is mythical, then do we have to accept what you are saying about logic as a logical argument? If we do, then apparently there is more to logic than myth."? Whoa. That's much too deep for me.
The bright side is that on most other boards this probably would have turned into someone cussing someone else out and comparing them to the Taliban. So good job guys.

Moe you censoring fundamentalist bastard.
Kidding! Ha!
Anyway, uh, yeah. I think that's the point I was trying to make, what you and BDC said. We do have to affirm things through intuition. In the end, we're just making assertions, and our logic is ultimately founded on those assertions. It is only illogical for me to shoot myself if I accept the premise that it is good to live. And that premise is one of those intutions, or assertions. Logic is just a way to tell if a conclusion rationally follows from a premise. Whether we accept those basic premises, like right and wrong, seems to me to be a matter of faith.

A great take on religion (one that is ridiculously close to my own view) can be found in the Vertigo comic Preacher. Nothing beats religious debate coupled with ultra-violence and characters like Arseface.

Palpatine, point well taken and thank you for clarifying. My only point was that the "faith" you speak of in dealing with these assertions is, well, a "rational" one, that without some kind of assertions (like those involving the laws of logic) we could not even begin to make sense of the world, and would instead be sitting in a corner drooling. I also believe that there are at least some moral assertions that are equally "valid" to make, claims that do not need to be logically justified in order to accept them. Thus, the idea that there absolutely is no right and wrong would seem to be false.
I will step down from the debate platform before CRZ pulls me off.

Without getting into the religious and political questions of this topic, I would just like to say I find that oft-used cliche to be somewhat spurious. I was born in America. All of my family is from America. Where exactly can I go, even if I don't like it here? All the places I might prefer to live have standards of immigration which are quite high and require you to have some sort of compelling reason (family, business, refugee) for coming into and remaining in their country legally. Now if we were to end the whole notion of the nation-state and the idea that you can live in one place but not 500 ft. farther to one direction because it crosses some imaginary line we have arbitrarily drawn to delineate between two somehow totally different groups of people, then I would agree with the notion of "America, Love it or Leave it." But until then, I have many issues with it, but I really have no choice but to stay here. So when I hear that our government thinks it's a good idea to give funding to organizations which demand you embrace God as a prerequisite to getting off of drugs, or when I have to worry if the chief law enforcement officer will vigorously prosecute people who commit crimes which he may personally agree with, I will complain until the cows come home, because I don't believe I can leave, and frankly why should I just because someone else is fouling up? It's MY country too.

i don't know about you all, but i'm still waiting for the government to issue some non-religious or non-xian money for the rest of us, because i do not trust in "god"
it's funny that when people say that they've "spoken" to god, they are considered blessed
but
if i were to say that i've spoken to aliens, i'm considered a freak...
interesting...
religion isn't just for me, there are so many things wrong with them i don't even know where to start...
i'm spirtiual yes, but not religious...there's a difference..
ok, i thought there was a point, but i've lost it, so i'll just shut up now
Riki: Don't forget you're also a freak if you claim to talk to god and what you say was said doesn't match up with what people of the major faiths think god would have said to someone if they talked to him. If you say god said we should all have equal amounts of everything then they would say "well god would never say THAT", and you'd be considered just as odd.

Sprituality is finding the inner you. It has to do with yourself and being calm and happy. Sprituality believes in the soul and the afterlife. It also has to do with the fact in a higher power.
Religion has to do with the afterlife, the soul, and a higher power. But there are churches where people worship instead of nature and in the home. There is prayer. Medidtaition is in sprituality. Also, churches are in cities, where sprituality is suppose to stand for fields, and the country and stuff.
I find most of the major religions to be full of hypocrisy. Over the past two millennia acts of violence, killing, and murder have occured at the behest of, or in the name of religion. And yet to this day sexuality is held as a sin by the figureheads of most major religions. What bullshit.

You know the difference between Religion and Spirituality? Nobody goes around killing people in the name of Spirituality.
Come on. A real God doesn't approve of killing in his name. As a matter of fact, the Catholic church has apoligized for what they have done.
People have evolved mentally in the past two millenias. 1,000 years ago, people thought devils caused diseases. 100 years ago, people thought we would never get on the moon. 50 years ago, people thought segreation was the right thing. 20 years ago, people thought AIDS were the fault of homosexuals.
People can change. The Catholic Church can too. And today on the news, the Pope ordered another meeting to change the Church again.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing specifically against Catholics (though they are represented as the most hard-line of all the western religions), just religion in general gives me nightmares. Too much killing, hypocrisy, and idiots in power. I guess I realize why big corporations and governments make me queasy too.

I'd probably feel better living several hundred years ago. Could just sail off out of the old tired power structures and found a colony somewhere else... and then kill all the people who were living there first... damn. I guess I just need to build my own space station.
It bothers me when people look at the crazies and kooks of the world claiming to be religious and view them as accurate representatives of what Christianity is about.
There are alot of wackos out there doing crazy ish they have no business doing in the name of God. That includes the phony scam artist preachers conning people out of their money and the fake faith-healers too.
These are not true people of God. They mis-use his name to push whatever they think, and I hate it when they're the ones that end up being examples of how all Christians are.
Me, I'm just 'Spiritual' right now. I'm formerly a Unitarian Universalist, but the local UU services are much too bland for my tastes. I also attended a Quaker school from 6-12th grade and hold true with a lot of their beliefs. Beyond that I just make it up as I go along. I believe in Higher Power, but I don't have any strong urge to worship according to somebody else's plan.
-Jag
Though it's hard to do, finding an open church service that you can attend and feel spiritual in a comfortable environment is a very good thing. Oh yeah, and not being bored to tears. That's also a major plus.
