While I was at work MTV News ran a little blurb talking about how the release date for The Massacre has been moved up due to massive bootlegging on Monday. Five minutes and a couple google searches after getting home from work and there it is. I don't understand why you would announce to the world that your album is bootlegged, because honestly I probably never would've known if it wasn't for hearing about it on tv.

Anyway though, overall the album is a total disappointment. Granted, 50 Cent has never been a lyrical specialist but his venomous disses and distinct voice made him at least listenable. This album has been touted as being leaps and bounds above Get Rich Or Die Trying, but it fails heartily in that respect. One of the obvious differences is that the production/instrumentals on Get Rich Or Die Trying were as a whole pretty tight, and most, if not all, of the songs had pretty memorable hooks/choruses. The Massacre is more reminiscent of G-Unit's (craptacular) Beg For Mercy with basically the same "shoot you up" and "don't mess with me" being reiterated in a million different unoriginal ways.

Ironically the street single "Disco Inferno" and the radio single "Candy Shop", stick out like sore thumbs because their production, while commercial, harkens back to that "In The Club" kind of sound. (Although it could be argued that both are blatant rip offs of "On Fire" and "Magic Stick" respectively.) The track "Piggybank" which was supposedly "too venomous for release" also makes an appearance on the cd but is anything but venomous. About 3 or 4 lines are devoted to direct shots at Fat Joe, and only ONE for Jadakiss. None of them are remarkably insulting either, and this stuff doesn't even compare to what 50 Cent was pumping out at the height of his feud with Ja Rule. The song is total B.S. and hype if you ask me. The only 2 notable tracks on the album are "Gatman and Robin" featuring a pretty crazy Eminem flow and the "Hate It Or Love It" remix with every member of G-Unit dropping a pretty decent verse.

After hearing the killer albeit short G-Unit Radio Pt.10 (Before The Massacre) mixtape I expected some seriously killer tracks on The Massacre. That was obviously not to be. The Game's album is definitely superior to The Massacre lyrically and production-wise. Even 50 Cent's appearances on that album are better than those on his own album. Sad. Needless to say, with the mediocre (at best) Encore and the sub-par The Massacre Dr. Dre better work some magic and make another classic out of Detox if Aftermath/Shady hopes to retain any credibility.

For the curious, tracklisting:

1. Intro
2. In My Hood
3. This Is 50
4. I'm Supposed To Die Tonight
5. Piggy Bank
6. Gatman and Robbin' (feat. Eminem)
7. Candy Shop
8. Outta Control
9. Get In My Car
10. Ski Mas Way
11. A Baltimore Love Thing
12. Ryder Music
13. Disco Inferno
14. Just A Lil Bit
15. Gunz Come Out
16. My Toy Soldier (feat. Tony Yayo)
17. Position Of Power
18. Build You Up (feat. Jamie Foxx)
19. God Gave Me Style
20. So Amazing
21. Hate It Or Love It (remix feat. G-Unit)

I'd say if anything, rent or borrow the album from a friend before buying it.

"After the first night she fall in love to chase the feeling, I hung out with Marvin when he wrote Sexual Healing. Kurt Cobain we were good friends Ozzy Ozborne too I be with rock stars see you lucky I'm fucking with you. I chill Frankie Lyman and Jimi Hendrix crew. See this is new to you but to me this ain't new. I live the lavish life listen if the mood is right me you and your sister can do the do tonight. I never steer you wrong. Hyper I make you calm. I be your incentive an reason for ya to move on. Lets make a date promise me you'll come an see me even if you gota sell your mommas TV. I love you love me back no one said loving me would be easy."- 50 Cent "Baltimore Love Thing"

My feelings on 50 Cent's new album "The Massacre" are so mixed it's hard to give an opinion in any direction. For every song like "Baltimore Love Thing" (where 50 raps from the perspective of Heroine trying to convince a woman to continue to use him a concept so unique and interesting that nearly all of his work becomes a blur of disappointment compared next to it) there are 3 or 4 "Candy Shop"s and "Disco Inferno"s. In some ways this is his best work and his most lazy at the same time. The few consistent themes on the album are things 50 has already touched base on in prior work and make his second full length album seem flat. If that wasn't bad enough 50 also seems delusional as to who his fan base is. Is it females who want poppy club songs? Suburban white kids who want gangster stuff? The streets who want beef? Or is it true hip hop fans who want top notch production and lyrical content? In defense of 50 he does bring something for each group on "The Massacre" although not enough in my mind to satisfy any sect completely. Much of my problems with "The Massacre" can be broken down in two areas.

First the pop songs. On this album I counted at least 6 singles. If it sellsbig you can be guaranteed we reach 6 singles on this album if not more. As a commercial artist this is fantastic news but for fans who wanted to see progression from someone many had deemed the "future of hip hop" it is nothing short of a major disappointment. One of 50's major attack points on Ja Rule is that he is "pop" well I hate to break the news to 50 but you are as well. You can't have it both ways.

My other major issue has to deal with that as well. For weeks and weeks the song "Piggy Bank" was hyped. 50 Cent was going to issue a challenge on 4 of hip hop's major artists (Nas, Jadakiss, Fat Joe and Shyne) for mostly unknown reasons. However the dis track did not live up to the hype nor did it explain any of the reasoning behind his actions. 50 comes off as a spoiled bully who is bored and has nothing else to do. The only explanation he gives for the attack on Jadakiss and Fat Joe was that they were on Ja Rule's "New York". Guilty by association in 50's universe. I would have no problem with this if 50 brought a lyrical ass whupping on Fat Joe (personally I enjoy much of Jadakiss's work) but he didn't. 50's digs can basically be summed up by saying he says he sold more records and he has more money then each artist. Thats it I have no doubt in my mind that if Jadakiss and Nas want to they could serve 50 a lyrical beating so bad that he may never open his mouth again but they have both remained quiet on for different reasons. Jadakiss is in a unique and odd spot being members of the same record label as 50 Cent (Interscope). Does he respond to the labels crown jewel? Or does he keep quiet and lose some of his rep? Nas has basically said in interviews that he is above beef right now so don't expect a retaliation from him any time soon. It's a shame that the worst of the 4 rappers, Fat Joe is the only one planning a retaliation track. There is a lot to go at 50 for but I doubt that Fat Joe A. is good enough to say it and B. has the balls to.

With all of that being said in some ways this is 50's best work ever. On the previously mentioned "Baltimore Love Song" 50 reaches what I think to be his highest point lyrically as an artist thus far. Much of 50's stick is his tough talking bravado and he certainly brings that on the album. The only other track that really caught my attention as something special was "I don't need em" a song on 50's drug pushing past. The subject has been touched upon many times previously by 50 but the fantastic production by Buck Wild make this a classic track.

One of the more refreshing things about "The Massacre" is that 50 has decided to take this on his own and not load up on guest appearances. It's all 50 except for 3 tracks ("Gatman and Robbin" ft Eminem, "My toy Soldier" ft Tony Yayo and "Hate it or Love it" remix ft. all of G-Unit") and I think it's nice to see a hip hop album not chock full of guest appearances. 50 is facing this one on his own and just for that reason alone I have gained respect him as an artist. When measured up to my expectations "The Massacre" falls short but when looked at in comparison to the rest of hip hop it fairs well. I don't know if that is more of a jab at the current state of hip hop or my high expectations. At the end of the day "The Massacre" is going to be one of the top selling albums of the year and is sure to be a huge success I just know that it could have been more of a critical one at the same time. Overall I would have to say that while things are not as good as they should have been it still is good enough to warrant a purchase.

you're on crack if you think game's albulum was better than the Massacre. game is garbage. I don't understand how anyone can listen to him, he has no lyrical skills, no flow, can't even sing a decent hook.

The Massacre isn't great but at least it has some great songs, i.e. Baltimore Love Thing, In My Hood, Get In My Car.

Game couldn't even do anything with one of the hottest beats ever made, that Dreams track from Kanye. Game is trash.

Ummm no. I'm not a 50 hater but The Massacre is a terrible album. I liked GRODT a lot but this is a pathetic sophmore slump.

The Documentary on the other hand is a top notch album. Game is far from the best lyrical emcee but he's away above 50 in every level. And I don't get this argument about singing hooks. What does that have to do with it? Rappers should stick to rapping and let people like Nate Dogg do the hooks. 50 used to mock Ja Rule for singing when he goes out and does the same thing.

It's obvious who Dre believes is a greater priority seeing as he gave Dre strong beats and only gave 50 two shitty ones.

I am pretty sure you mean he gave The Game strong beats and not 50. If that is what you meant, could it have something to do with that this is the Game's first album released and this is not 50's? 50 Cent has reached a point where he doesn't necessiarly need Dre's strong beats as much as The Game does right now.

Jada actually DOES have a retaliation track lined up and that'll be a joy to hear. It's just too bad that Nas, as has been mentioned, won't get into this, because he could tear 50 to shreds.

I'm currently watching "All Eyes On 50 Cent: The Sequel" on MTV and, wow, has this man become an egomaniac.

First of all, how ridiculous is it that he feels the need to lob dis tracks at decent artists just because they've collaborated with Ja Rule. 50, YOU'VE ALREADY WON! Is there really any need to drag out the Ja Rule beef months after he's already waved the white flag? It reeks of desperation.

Second, don't let anyone tell you that success hasn't gotten to 50's head. Anytime Sway tried to point out that Fat Joe and Jadakiss have enjoyed success, 50 would either shoot back with "They haven't sold as much as I have" or "They're not as big a star as I am".

Finally, paranoia seems to have set in. 50's starting feuds because he sees anyone collaborating with Ja Rule as "guilty by collaboration" and he puts them on his enemies list. The fact that he dropped Game from the G-Unit label because Game (God forbid) doesn't WANT to get into feuds that could potentially lead into isolation and even violence shows that 50's going off the deep end. Someone needs to listen to Eminem's "Like Toy Soldiers" a little more.

Massacre will enjoy a lot of success, but at this point, I'm hoping the 50 Cent decline starts here, because this is getting ridiculous.

Actually, it's been well documented that Game will see an artist in person one night and tell them what a big fan he is and how much he respects them, and then the very next day release a diss track toward them. (see: Yukmouth, Joe Budden, Memphis Bleek, Jay-Z) Game is supposedly en route to recording a track with NaS though, so who knows what'll come of that.

Although, rumor has it that a good handful of the beats on Game's album were swiped from The Massacre in order to give Game a strong debut. Which would sort of (although it's kind of a stretch) explain "Hate It Or Love It" showing up twice. Then again, 50 seems to be the one perpetuating this rumor the most, so who knows. There are a couple interviews on the Power 105 and Hot97 websites from both camps.
