...and I'm getting it the day it's released!

What sold me on the system was the fact that I can use it for virtually any form of multimedia: MP3s, JPEGs, video, anything....it's not just a portable video game system!

Multi-functionality is an important thing for me. I won't drop C$300 for a system that will ONLY play video games. Kinda why I love my PS2 and why I don't own a 'Cube.

Anyone else taking the plunge?

Ok, problem. First, yes it will play all those things. If you buy something to put them on. Like a movie released in their special format. But if you really like a movie, why not buy it on the best format, DVD? Also, the PSP comes with a very small memory stick. big enough for just a few songs. So if you really want to use it for anything other than games, you'll be spending a lot more than $250.

The graphics look very impressive. I wish they had just stuck with making it a game machine, though. Would have driven down the price and gotten rid of features that won't end up helping sell the system much.

Oh and one of the buttons is known to fail quickly.

They're replacing the button issue, at least. Retracting their original response, "We built it that way!"

I should certainly hope they're retracting their original statement, I know a hell of a lot of people who were really annoyed by that one.

I'm sure I'll pick up a PSP someday, but it'll be when a game I want comes out for it. It annoys me so much when people go on and on about how it's an iPod killer. No, it's not an iPod killer, I don't even know how you can compair the two.

Well, as much as I like that it does play MP3s and video files, my main thing is that it will display JPEGs...and a 32MB memory stick can hold a LOT of pictures.

I'm interested in seeing how many studios sign on to release their movies on the UMD format. I'm stoked that I'll receive Spider-Man 2 with my PSP.

I get what you're saying, but lets take this from a typical consumer point of view. Hand held gaming devices are to this point used by children. Yes some of us adults do use them, but the market it almost entirely children. Sony has built a device that is aimed at getting older people to buy into it. Little kids don't care about MP3's and jpegs. They want games. Adults want MP3's and jpegs and movies, but want them in other ways currently. They want IPOD's and DVD's. This is trying to be an all in one system, but if you love say Spiderman 2, why would you not have it on DVD? Sure you get it with your PSP, but it's better quality on your DVD. Will most people want to buy two copies of the same movie? Chances are the answer is a solid no. Not to mention the battery is said to not last very long when playing movies.

And yes it plays MP3's. But there are lots of handheld devices that play MP3's and do it better than the PSP. They actually have drives in them to hold the songs to begin with, and are built to move around with. Can you see yourself playing music with this thing? it's not huge, but it's not handy either.

As for pictures, well that's cool but it's not a system seller. I can put pictures on my cell phone or on my pda, things which have great uses other than games. This thing will sell because of the power in terms of gaming. Which is has a lot of. However making it do all those other things that most people won't care about has driven the price to a point that is tricky. Those with children will not be happy about spending $250 per unit when they can get an SP for $80 or a DS for $150. Case in point, while the DS has done well, the SP has been doing great because of the price drop and backward compatibility. Parents don't want to spend a ton on something like this, and it's showing.

Most parents use the handhelds on drives to keep the kids occupied. But tv's in cars are becoming the first way to do that, and if you have a dvd player in the car why would you spend money on a device that plays this special format? Plus parents know you can't buy something for just one kid. it doesn't work that way. Thus those with more than one child will not be shelling out $500 or more for this thing.

I'm rambling around a bit, but I hope you get the point. This device is not created with the right audience in mind. And that will mean failure. Unless they create tons of awesome games and drop the price quickly. And even then I'm doubtfull.

It may have something to do with me personally. I can't play handheld games. When do I ever have the chance that it would be a preferred option? when I'm home, I'm playing Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube. I don't want to stare at a small screen with lesser graphics. When I'm not home, I'm rarely ever in a postion that I want to play a video game. When would I use this? While at work? While driving? Maybe sitting at an airport or something, but I've got my laptop to do the things this does but better.

I just don't get Sony's thinking here.

The video feature is for porn. People in public restrooms watching porn.

You heard me.

It's disturbing, but it's what it has to be for. Why else wouldn't you just carry one of those $150 DVD players and use your DVD collection?

It's pocket sized so that people can bring the JPEG and MPEG porn with them on the road.

Perverts will buy the PSP and porn will make it profitable.

Hey, wmtastic...you offer some good arguments here...but I never really did agree with the "typical" opinion...because unlike some people, I don't own a vehicle with a built in DVD player, I don't own a super expensive PDA, my cellphone doesn't support graphics, and I really don't see the necessity of that.

Would I use my PSP for MP3s? Probably....since I don't own an MP3 player. That eliminates the need to buy one for me.

Its my opinion that hand held video games are reaching for a more mature market, simply because of the inclusion of wireless wifi capabilities. I mean, what kid would care for that?

For the record, I do have Spiderman 2 on DVD, and I don't own a portable DVD player, because it's not portable ENOUGH. Sure I can carry one in my backpack, but it's not easy to just grab one out of my backpack, turn on, and put away afterward.

I'm looking forward to seeing the PSP in action, playing one of those UMD movies.

About the black thing, if you manipulate the color spectrum to the darker(bottom) part and move the shade(?) bar to the left you can get black. It works well for gloves and boots, although it's a little hard to get a realistic looking black.
