Since "Sideways" was the only best-film nominee I saw, I was pulling for them. I was shocked that Giamatti didn't even get nominated for Best Actor, but I don't know who they would've omitted to put him in. Also pulled for Church, because I loved him on "Wings" and "Ned and Stacey." Who woulda thunk that of everyone on "Wings," Lowell the Mechanic would be the one nominated for an Oscar? And I LOVED Jamie Foxx's acceptance speech.
I hope that, when the Academy deigns to bestow one of those honorary Oscars on Scorsese in another five or ten years' time, he waltzes gracefully up to the stage, takes the statue, and calmly tells every mindless prick AMPAS member who robbed him of the two or three ACTUAL gongs he's deserved to take their empty gesture and shove it up their collective asses. What a fucking political popularity contest.
Here's the only thing I can think of about Giamatti getting le snub: Of the nominees, who WOULD you drop to make room for him? I'm not sure I'd drop anyone... I was more impressed with Thomas Haden Church than A. Bart's son.

"Jeez, some people seem to think anything short of Vince bending over and spreading his asscheeks is a slap in the face." (Hogan's My Dad)
Giamatti was better than Johnny Depp and Clint Eastwood, much as I liked both of the pictures they were in. (Perhaps Don Cheadle too, although I thought it was awesome he got a nomination, and I didn't manage to see that one.)
I just think it was awesome that the actual best movie of the year won Best Picture two years running.
"Take away the right to say fuck and you take away the right to say fuck the government." -----Lenny Bruce
I was really happy that Foxx won, although it wasn't like there was any doubt. Still, a part of me wanted to see Don Cheadle get the award.
I'm with everyone on the Paul Giamatti train. Of course, like everyone else said, I guess there's nobody who you could have replaced him with (not sure about Depp, though, as I had no desire to see that movie (not sure why)).

Never 'Wiener of the Day', and is actually quite bitter about it.
I was surprised to see Million Dollar Baby take so many of the top awards. The Academy can't seem to say no to Clint, with the exception of Best Actor, where Jamie Foxx was pretty much a foregone conclusion.
I was surprised that Super Size Me didn't get Best Documentary. I would have thought it to be a shoo-in.
And how about Chris Rock as host? I definitely liked the opening monologue, but you could see the nerves start to set in as the show went on. Maybe FCC fears were setting in as soon as the first "ass" came out and ABC got to him during a commercial break.
"You're telling me you couldn't have had ME drive JBL's limo?"
See, here's the really unfortunate thing about Scorsese....this is maybe his first nomination when you could say that he actually wasn't the best director of the year. It was at least a 50-50 split between him and Clint, though I've got to admit, I was really pulling hard for Marty to finally break through tonight.
One more nomination and Scorsese ties Clarence Brown for the record for most unsuccessful directing noms! Yay?
I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? One last thing: while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tight-Ass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits." --- President Jed Bartlett, The West Wing
I was biased, because after The Aviator won all the early awards, I was rooting against the film. They couldn't have dropped one award for Harry Potter (technically, it was a marvel) or Passion of the Christ?
In fact, there was one award that had Potter, Lemony Snicket AND Passion all nominated (Best Score)? And who wins? Finding Neverland. ARGH!
The only real joy for me was having Eternal Sunshine win for Best Original Screenplay, and Jamie Foxx win for Ray. I'm glad for Hilary Swank as well, because I've loved her for a while. I've in fact always maintained that she was underappreciated for her character work in Insomnia.
I was glad Sean Penn put Rock in his place. Granted, Penn came off as pompous, but at least he didn't come off as low-rate and assinine as Rock did. I agreed with (and predicted) all the major winners except the Scorsese snub.

See, I thought Penn came off as somebody with no sense of humor. Rock was making jokes. Why didn't Penn defend everybody that Rock insulted? Did anybody think that Rock really felt that way about Jude Law? It's a joke, people.
I guess that's what happens when you get an "edgy" comic to host. Some people get offended. I thought Rock was good (hell, he kept me entertained with one-liners), and he wasn't afraid to poke fun at himself, either. It's honestly the most I've watched an Oscar telecast in years. I was going to turn the channel, but he then went to the Magic Johnson theatre, and I tuned right back in.
Of course, at some points, I also said to myself, "Damn, if Rock isn't careful, he's going to become the next Don Rickles" and everybody is going to want to be 'zinged' by him.
Naw, I'm not offended, but I thought it was cool that Penn came out and trashed his scripted comments to take up for a guy who deserves so props. I didn't think Rock was offensive or over the top, just trashy for something as glamorous as the Oscars.
Two more awards I would give out: Best cleavage: Salma Hayek Best live song: Santana and Banderas. That was very cool and heartfelt.
I missed whatever happened with Sean Penn. It seems pretty low-class to me. Rock was obviously joking, and sort of tried to hammer that point home when he started cracking on himself (how he's not an A-list star and how no respectable actor would have done Pootie Tang). But, you just never know with some people.

Really? To me it came off as crass and a total ratings ploy. You had Santana and Banderas fighting over who was the biggest ham and simultaneuosly killing the song. Meanwhile, the guy who wrote and performed the song in the movie was forced to watch from the audience because he isn't a big enough "name".
I like how he got the last word (note?) in during his acceptance speech.
This is why Chris Rock should not have hosted the show. How can he win when he people think he's out of line for cracking a joke about Jude Law?

I'm most certainly NOT a fan of her music, but beyonce really impressed me last night. While I'd rather have heard the original performers do thier songs on the show, she did a worthy job on the songs she sang. She had more range then I'd have given her credit for.
Chris Rock should be this decades Billy Crystal. I like Jude Law and I still couldn't stop laughing about that. Also, the Tobey Maguire line was a winner as well and I could mentally picture Michael Moore doing SUPER SIZE ME.
If anyone is interested in this kinda stuff, the early ratings are showing that this was the most watched oscar telecast since 2000. This is kinda funny since none of the best picture nominees have made over $100million yet and as it looks now the only one that will is THE AVIATOR which didn't win. My guess is the big turnout was for Chris Rock.

Originally posted by DJ FrostyFreezeI watched the show last night, but I must've missed the Sean Penn/Chris Rock thing. Can someone fill me in on exactly what happened?
In his monologue, Rock did a bit about how there's only a couple real stars and the rest are just really popular people like Jude Law and how he is in every movie now. "He's gay, he's straight, he's playing Kareem Abdul-Jabaar." It was really tame compared to what he probably would have said on HBO or MTV.
Later in the show, Sean Penn comes out to present an award and says "I can answer our host's question about who Jude Law is. Jude Law is one of our finest and most talented actors." Just being a total pompous prick about a monologue joke poking fun at Jude Law.
