Hey. I know some of you plan on being lurkers forever. Here's why you should sign up for an account...

1) It shows you what posts you have read when you view the board.
2) You can choose to either show all / show new in the threads.
3) Spiffy AVATAR!

Now, I realize that some of the guests are people who probably don't want us to know that they are here reading... but that's really easy to fix. Choose a fake(r) name.

Oh, I'm grabbing the guest IPs anyway, so I'm not sure what advantages you are getting by not registering.

By the way, since we are talking about registering, don't be stupid and impersonate anyone else. Pretending to be another person is considered a really bad thing. We're not only protecting ourselves by banning you, we are protecting you as well.

And, for the record, if the real Scott Keith wants to register an account, he will not be banned. The last two attempts to sign up as keith were from Australian IP addresses, which is why they were banned.

So - everyone is welcome to sign up. We're not selling your e-mail addresses or anything...

Hey Guru,

How many guest-lurkers would you say come around per day?

It's hard to tell because of IP addresses changing due to dial-up and people checking both at work and at home.

I'm pretty sure we are over 1000 unique users if I am reading the logs right... with only 240 or so regged. I'm assuming that the 1000 figure is more like 500 with people having work and home access...

It's hard to tell We've only been up for a little over a week now and we're already over 100k page views according to the counter that is incrememented every time one of these php pages is rendered...

I really need to learn how to read everything in MRTG. There is more information there than I can shake a stick at.

//edit oh. I didn't really explicitly answer that, did I?
Again, dialup and DHCP makes it hard to tell, but I think we probably have around (low estimate) another 100 people or so that are reading but not regged. I've seen as high as 14 guests logged on at once before...

What do you mean? I thought IPs were permanent.

No, that's not the case usually with dial-up modem users. Cable modem users, to some extent, also change IP addresses.

Generally on dial-up connection you get an addresss using DHCP - Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. Basically, short version - you ask for an addy and you get one out of a possible pool that belongs to the provider. When you hang up, the addy is relased back into the pool.

Another feature of DHCP is the lease time. If you have a cable modem, and you turn off your system for a week while you are on vacation, the odds are that your IP lease will expire. So - you might end up with a new IP as well depending on how your network is set up.

So - a dial-up guest might be showing up as a new entry for every time they visit, whereas a cable modem guest MIGHT be showing up different every time but is probably always using the same IP address.

So in what scenario would someone be able to have the same IP every time, or is that even possible?

Well, with DHCP you don't necessarily lose your IP if you are constantly connected. For instance, my cable modem at home had the same IP address for 6 months until I lost power for a night, when it came back up I had a new IP.

There is also the possibility that someone could have a static IP address. These do not change. Generally this would be the case with a SOHO package for DSL or Cable (SOHO is small office / home office) or if they had a t1 or some sort of line like that. Most offices would be connecting through a firewall which is connected to the internet with a static IP.

Webservers generally have static IP addresses. Generally, things that need to be contacted by the outside world would need to be set up with a publically accessable static-ip.

I'm really glossing over this here There are obviously exceptions...

It's what they call the wee little pic underneath your name in the left bar.

For example: My Avatar is the funtabulous 1000% Guapo Picture, which reminds all of how awesome Shocker is.

Er, excuse me for a moment. One of the phantom Scott Keiths is from Britain. Making it slightly difficult to be using an Australian IP.

You may be from Britain, but the hostname of your IP is from Australia.

Name: proxy1.esc.net.au
Address: 203.25.185.11

By the way, Pato, putting "Banned score: 1" in your signature is one of those things that tends to make me regret unblocking said IP. But as long as you're scoring points with your friends, I guess it's okay?

FWIW, I think Keith posts under RSPW-FAQ, or at least, that's who I saw lurking on the old EZ-Board.

I don't know if I'm counted as a "friend" of Pato's, but I think he's being kinda silly.

That's not my IP.......but you can call it anything you like.

Oh, go ahead and ban me. I'm not really that bothered, honestly! I'm sure it would give you great pleasure!

But if the sig really upsets you, I'll be nice and change it.

(Oh, and I'm scoring on my lonesome and embrassing my "friends" with this shite. So please absolve them from all wrongdoing.)

Pato, people can still be your friends, and think you're behaving like a complete jackass. Heck, they can be friends from the same country and think you're being a complete jackass.

Guess what I think?
