Hard to believe they are already three shows in the second season. I thought the season started a week later than it did, so I really felt more confused than normal watching what I thought was the follow-up show from last year. At least I can catch all three in a row this Friday night.

Anyway, I'm liking this season a lot thus far. The show is frustrating at times, because they are really into the slow slow build and many of the shows are just building block shows. I'm still not exactly sure where all of these events are headed and I still have no idea why it's so important for Ben Hawkins to hunt for Henry Scutter. Then there is Brother Justin who has turned into the man with the tree tattoo that haunts Ben Hawkin's dreams. How or where they will cross paths still remains a total mystery to me.

I wouldn't think that this show has about a season or two left after this one. The one thing I fear is that it will suffer the fate of the X-Files ... which I thought had a great build in it's continuing storyline, but very poor execution explaining it all in the end.

This show doesn't get the love that a lot of HBO shows get from the media, but it should as it's a really well written and well acted show.

Ooooh! I believe the total count of W's interested in Carnivale has now soared to 5 of us! Woo-hoo! :-)

OK, if you haven't seen ep. 1 from this season, that'll clear some things up for you. They seem (to me) to have decided to do a lot of explicit exposition in that episode, presumably to try to catch up people who haven't watched all along, but also to move some of the action along. One of those points is Management flat out telling Ben to go find Henry Scudder, at least in part because Management & Scudder have unfinished business. Also in episode 1 is some pretty explicit stuff about Justin also neding to find Scudder, which naturally puts Ben & Justin on a collision path. Now whether Justin *is* the Tree Tattoo guy, or is just trying to become the Tree Tattoo guy -- that remains to be seen.

As to series duration, I have no clue. I'll certainly be majorly pissed if they don't get the chance to wrap up the show (i.e. provide a blow-off). I think (hope) that they do have a long-term strategy -- after all the storyline does have at least one major intrinsic ... big bang. So long as they get at least that far, I'm good.

Agreed on episode 1, Big Daddy. You need to see that to get you up to speed. They got way more explicit in that episode than they did the whole first season.

I also think Brother Justin is trying to become the Tattoo Man, not that he already is or was the Tattoo Man.

As for the duration of the show, I am not sure how long this could go on for. It seems like there has to be some endpoint sooner rather than later, though. One thing that became clear to me as we watched all of Season 1 in a week was the fact that the same person didn't write all the episodes. In fact, it was pretty clear that it was a different person every week. How do they maintain any continuity doing that? Does anybody know if they just have one big writing team and that one "lead" writer gets the credit for that episode?

I've heard that it almost didn't get renewed, which might explain the need to move the plot along a bit during season two..

There were a lot of interesting things in the first season that made it a fun show to watch. They just put the slow burn on almost ALL of the subplots that sometimes you were left wondering what in the hell was really going on...

The Babylon episode made the series for me... if I've ever seen a creepier ending...

That would have been a shame as the show is far better than 'Deadwood' which gets a lot more praise.

Now that I'm all caught up after double back and catching the first episode things are making more sense. The Fourth epidsode sure turned up people's bad side a notch or two. Brother Justin is putting little effort into showing any sign of goodness, but I starting to think he is going to need Iris a lot more than he realizes. I can see Hawkin's needing Sofie to come around for his cause as well.

There's a lot of side story intrigue going on as well. I know they are all curious as to where Lodes is, but where the hell did the Lizard Man and the Siamese Twins from last season go?

It'll be interesting to see next week's show with what appears to be Brother Justin's "Apostle" entering Hawkin's inner circle.

My guess is that's just a cost-cutting move. They were not a part of any story lines, so they were just window dressing. Though, I thought the Lizard Man had a few good one-liners last season.

That whole Scudder clan gave me the willies in a "Deliverance" sort of way. Ick.

Ben Hawkins looked about as thrilled as I would be to learn they were my kin.

I was actually thinking that both the twins (Gemini?) & Gecko (lizard/snake/...?) would end up being more than just for ambience. Apparently not. (I heard budget as the reason too. Which is a shame all around.)

Aww, but isn't it nice for Ben to know that "there's always room at the table for kin"? Yeesh. I don't want to think about what they may actually serve at a family dinner. Actually I was wondering whether Varlyn Stroud would be dropping by Old Cherry Blossom Road too -- that could be entertaining. ;-)

This week's episode felt like the end of one chapter and the start of another. A lot really happened this week and it may require a reviewing on my part so I can soak it all in. What are great end scene with Justin seeing through Hawkin's eyes.

We've watched it twice now and we are now thinking that not only did Justin see through Ben's eyes, but Ben could see Justin, too.

Was anybody else as creeped out as we were by the mask-making dude? Yipes.

I am also not sure what to make of the whole Iris copping to the arson. What is Justin's whole plan there?

And the whole vibe I am getting from Stroud is way, way different than when he played Drew Carey's brother Steve. He's good.

Twofold. First, he & Iris are having a power struggle -- she's always been the controlling one (although benevolently, to Justin at least), & the new Justin is just realising that & not much liking it. He's trying to make her sweat & demonstrate that he's the dominant one. While he's managing to make her nervous, I personally don't think it's really working. (I won't do this unless you ask me for my help. Although we don't see him ask, I think he must have. Which means he still needs her.)

Second, Tommy Dolan is transcribing her confession in his own hand. (Rather like Justin had the doctor at Camarillo ... uh, Sherwood transcribe his treatise. Whatever happened to that, BTW? I'm suprised we haven't seen it since.) Anyway, Tommy's writing out a confession -- I'm thinking it's going to turn into Tommy's confession real quick.

Tommy's character is just aching for something REALLY bad to happen to him. Almost everyone who comes close to Justing gets brutilized in some way.

I think it'll be worse for him.

Am I the only one who thinks they've turned up the creepiness factor to 11 this season?

There was a lot of Carny love happening this week. This was sort of a rest episode after having so much happen the last couple of weeks. So, I take it Sophie's father was actually one of the tree men, and her comment that she would 'kill her father dead' may come into play down the road. It also seems likely that she is carrying the 'next hope' if Hawkins fails in his quest.

I still don't have any idea where the gambling angle is headed, but it's becoming quite a big part of the show. Some new acts on the show should at least make for some interesting background scenery.

Oh yeah, nice call on Dolan there emma.

emma NAILS it!!! Before the show started, I had told my wife that one of the smart Ws had said that this was what was going to happen. She didn't believe, but I did. And there you go! Good call, emma!

Well, goddamn ... he found Scutter! That was a lot to have go down in only 45 minutes. I expected more of a struggle from Scutter, he doesn't seem to be out of the oridinary, yet. I'm not sure what happens now, although it seems as if Mangement might not be all done quite yet after grabbing ahold of Hawkins. The Jonsey storyline is a bit odd. I'm still waiting for Rita Sue to blow her top on Frank has it coming, to say the least.

I'm curious as to how many episodes they are going to run this season, because I saw that Deadwood is starting up March 6th ... maybe it will run at 10?

(Yea, me! for the Tommy Dolan thing. :-) )

(According to TvTome (tvtome.com) season 2 has 12 episodes, as did season 1.)

Tonight's show: Holy shit!

He found Scudder, dodged Stroud, half-healed Scudder, dazed Damascus, chatted with daddy, maybe killed Management, who maybe killed Scudder (finally after all these years)... Zzzzoooom! Besides all that, Justin severs ties with all extant organized religion, naked Jonsey (Wooooo!), Libby has a new experience... I'd say we got a bit of plot progression!

I'm exhausted! :-)

My wife and I thought the same thing, emma. We plod along for six episodes and then wham! zoom! 45 minutes and all kinds of hell breaks loose. They advanced so many storylines in such a short period of time, we assumed they had been canceled!

My wife also made some sort of gasping sound when Jonesy disrobed.

What was the point of Libby's new experience? Did we really need that?

I still can't wrap my mind around Linda Hunt voicing Management.

In a manner of speaking. :-)

Well, it does preempt any speculation about whether Libby is pregnant with Jonsey's baby. (I read someplace that Daniel Knauf was slightly exasperated last season with all the speculation/assumptions about whether Sophie was pregnant from her encounter with the diner guy in Black Blizzard.)

I don't get the pigs. Usually I've at least got some kind of idea/theory/feeling, but I'm at a loss about that one. (Nice resonance with Justin's line about "the temptation of my sister's bacon" though. :-) )

There were actually a whole lot of really funny lines tossed in besides. I'm thinking my favourite has to be "What a day to lose the maid." (You'd think by this point, Iris would just have a whole queue of them pending out back. Next!)

I would prefer they slow things down a bit. The finding of Scutter seemed like it should have been more dramatic. As well as the reuniting of himself and Management.

Anybody else been to the CarnyCon (mooncross.net) site yet?

The Daniel Knauf interview (mooncross.net) is particularly interesting! He goes ahead & explicitly spells out a few things that apparently some people just weren't getting. It sounds like he's just a little ... let's say bemused at some of the things people are still questioning.

Apparently the site is intended to be a limited duration thing (just through March 1), & includes a chatroom with scheduled VIPs! It's also a really pretty site -- the people who did it did a lovely job.

TiVo has the 30-second skip buried in the software as an easter egg. It's a beautiful thing. The ReplayTV feature worked in a similar way, which was the problem. With fast-forwarding, you at least see the ad.
