The Detroit Tigers snared the last remaining premiere free agent of the offseason, agreeing to a $75 million, five-year contract with outfielder Magglio Ordonez, a baseball source said Saturday.

Ordonez's deal could be worth up to $105 million over seven seasons, the source told The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity.

The 31-year-old Ordonez gets a $6 million signing bonus and a $6 million salary in 2005, meaning the Tigers' exposure is $12 million.

His contract calls for a $15 million salary in 2006, $12 million in 2007, $15 million in 2008 and $18 million in 2009. Detroit has a $15 million option for 2010 with a $3 million buyout, and a $15 million option for 2011 with no buyout.

In addition, Ordonez's salary in each of the option years would become guaranteed if he has 135 starts or 540 plate appearances in the previous season, or 270 starts or 1,080 plate appearances in the previous two seasons. If his 2010 salary becomes guaranteed under this provision, it would be at $18 million. The 2011 salary would be $15 million. [emphasis mine]

Hell of a deal to give a guy with a mystery knee ailment. No t sure he's worth that if healthy.

Worth noting that this is the second somewhat voidable contract handed out by the Tigers, both to Boras clients.

Although I have no doubt of Boras's evil mind control powers, I really have my questions about what the Tigers are trying to do here... they're obviously trying to compete by signing guys like Pudge, Maggs, and Percival (yet another questionable signing), but they're overpaying for high risk guys instead of getting a more solid option like a Delgado or a starting pitcher or two. The very best scenario for this team would be to win the AL Central, and that's going to be extremely difficult to do thanks to young teams like Minnesota and Cleveland, the White Sox are talented enough to be up there, and even the Royals could be spoilers if their pitching prospects start to come through. I'm thinking that Dombrowski is trying to make a desperate splash in order to boost ticket sales, building on the huge win jump of last year's team... but that's not gonna happen this year, and they're going to be stuck in mediocrity with some huge contracts.

The Colorado Rockies are finally off the hook for the Mike Hampton contract being the worst in baseball history, as the Tigers have far surpassed them in terms of stupidity. Boras must have pictures of Ilitch doing unmentionable acts with an octopus in order to get Ordonez this deal.

I think he's holding Little Caesar for ransom.

I gotta shake my head at deals like this. I understand, or think I do, that a team like the Tigers has to overpay to make a splash in the free-agent market. They don't have the cache that, say, New York teams do. But blowing huge sums of money on two players is not the way to field a competitive team. Ordonez isn't bad, but he isn't Beltran. I don't think he's going to pack the house for them. So, in the end, I think they've thrown all this money away for the opportunity to be slightly better for several years, and much poorer.

And they play in one of the most miserable divisions in baseball, to boot. It's not out of the realm of possibility that they could, you know, actually compete some day.

The problem with a deal like this is once your young players develop, there is no way to fit them into the payroll. So once again you are trading for prospects.

Do any of you think for a second that he doesnt miss a month or so at the begining of the season, assuring himself he WONT make the number of games required, and the tigers void his contract? He still gets his 12 million this season and then its off to the negotiating table again with some other poor schulb team.

Here's the nightmare (and I think could be likely) scenario for the Tigers:

He comes to spring training. He can play. He's physically capable of doing so. However, he's not even close to what he was. He is in the opening day lineup, and by August he's hitting .250/13/48. They start to sit him for a "prospect". He misses enough games to void the deal despite being healthy enough to play (and thus violating the "spirit" of the clause). Boras sues, the MLBPA gets involved, and a giant clusterfuck ensues.

If I'm reading the article right, the 135/540 or 270 starts/1080 plate appearances are for the option years of 2010 and 2011. The fail safe for 2006-2009 is if the left knee puts him on the DL for 25 plus games in '05. What happens if it turns out he goes on the DL for 100 games in '05 due to blowing out his right knee due to compensating for the left knee? That wouldn't be a reoccurrance of the left knee injury, and 4 guaranteed years would kick in.
Now, if they were rolling the dice on $12 million for a year because it would put them over the top, I might think at least Detroit is willing to spend to win. However, even with a relatively healthy Ordonez(which would trigger the rest of the contract), I think they'll have trouble finishing above 4th in the Central. They might have the usual "dip" year after making marked improvement last year.

I think its written in the contract to where he has to miss the time with (specifically) a left-knee injury. If he's just sitting on the bench, they're just wasting the money they foolishly spent on him. (But, if what you're getting that is that the Tigers put him on the DL with a phantom knee injury. Then a} that's horrible PR, and they'll never be able to sign a free agent again, and b} the lawsuits will indeed be coming in hard and heavy.)

Stagger - Why on Earth would he want to do that? Sure he'd get the 12 million he's owed this year, but there's no way he'd get the rest of this insane contract on the open market again. If the contract gets voided after this season, he's signing something like a one year, seven million dollar make-good deal NEXT offseason, maybe with an option for a second year, dependant upon games played. If he's lucky. He'd be a moron to pull something like that. And remember, if he hurts anything other than his left knee, the contract isn't voidable.
