I think everyone pretty much knew the outcome of this one from the words "and accompanied by multi-platinum recording artist Nelly..." Had Spinks not watched Forrest-Mayorga I? (whatever happened to Vern anyway?)

I wonder what's next? The HBO-Showtime rivalry is going to make it tough to make a lot of the best fights at 147. I'm guessing Judah fights a mandatory or something and then fights Tszyu again, if Tszyu can't get a fight against the winner of Mayweather-Gatti. I don't know how much I buy De La Hoya and Mosley's jump down to 147 (although I'm sure Oscar will go back to 154) - I'm thinking Oscar's probably best off fighting the winner of Trinidad/Wright at 154 - with everyone hoping it's Trinidad. Either that, or giving Mosley the money to fight him again, either at 147 or 154.

My call? Tszyu agrees to a rematch with Judah - at 140, in Australia (or Russia) and for 80% of the purse. Judah foolishly takes him up on it. Spinks is somewhat SOL now, which is a shame.

Old Montey Barrett's looking great too. I can't really see him beating Byrd, Rahman, or Vitali, but he could probably give John Ruiz or Lamont Brewster a fight.

I don't know if I'd say Spinks is SOL, though he assuredly has one hell of a mountain to climb if he wants to remain in the big game. Still -- a rematch with Juda isn't out of the question, and I'd welcome Zab / Cory III. Watching that fight was one of the very few times I was truly captivated by defensive wizardry. Both of those guys were just remarkable.

What I want to know is what the hell was Garcia DOING in there? He seemed to be really off tonight reffing that bout. He waved off the first knock-down (which had me dreading the idea of the fight going to the judges, only to be decided by a point); then he totally, inexplicably allows the fight to continue after Spinks was in La-La Land, and even Juda was begging him to stop it.

I mean, you know a fighter's in trouble when the guy beating on him doesn't want to throw another punch. Yeesh. I felt bad for Juda -- he knew Spinks was out, but with the ref saying "keep going", what do you do? On the one hand you don't want to kill the guy, but on the other hand... ya have to box.

Messy. I hope I never see anything like that again.

I really was worried for Spinks going with the big Nelly intro (even if it was pretty damned cool) while Judah just had the eye of the tiger in the ring. It did remind me, as Moe mentioned, of Vernon Forrest pulling that before the Mayorga fight. (I think Forrest had shoulder surgery, btw.) It's about time Judah got that title, as he was doing less with more than just about anyone in the sport, IMO. I'd love to see Oscar fight Judah to see if he could deal with Zab's quickness.

The heavyweight fight was much more entertaining, of course. I wouldn't mind seeing a Mesi-Barrett rematch. (Brewster is fighting Golota on 4/16, which I expect Golota to win.) It's pretty sad that THAT was a title eliminator, though.

EDIT: Duane Ford had Judah up 79-73!! Is there any way Judah won every round except one? I thought it was a LOT closer.

Not actually having seen Judah in action since KT knocked him out, I can't believe that him taking on KT again would be foolish. Judah had Tszyu in trouble in that fight. If he concentrated more on being smart than trying to pretend he wasn't hurt, it could have been different.
IF Judah has matured as a boxer and shows Tszyu some respect, I think he could trouble him. Assuming he doesn't get hit, but you could say that about any Tszyu opponent.

No - I mean that Judah has been so desparate to fight Tszyu again that he'd probably take a really bad deal - both in terms of venue, weight, and money - in order to make it happen, just like he did with the Spinks fight.

I really think the best move for Kostya is to just say "you want a rematch - come and get me. I'm at 140." Kostya's a Bernard Hopkins kind of guy - he's made 140 his whole career, and he's past the age where you start to struggle to make weight and move up. There's no reason for him to risk moving up into an unfamiliar weight class - especially without a tunup fight, which he's made clear he's not interested in. Whereas Zab is probably going to have to kill himself to make that kind of weight now.

EDIT: Duane Ford had Judah up 79-73!! Is there any way Judah won every round except one? I thought it was a LOT closer.

I could honestly see it being scored anywhere from 80-72 Judah to 78-73 Spinks. Rounds 7 and 8 were the only ones that one fighter clearly won - and even round 8 is tough because Spinks had it won until the last flurry by Judah. I had it 57-57 after the first 6 rounds, but that's more to the psychological thing of "this is a really close fight, and I gave the edge to Judah last round, so I guess I should give the edge to Spinks this round." But I could certaintly see a judge who tends to give the edge to the aggressor giving Judah all 8 rounds (maybe not the 2nd).

But really, when each fighter lands like, 6 punches in a round, what do you do with it?

I thought there were questions about whether Mesi would ever fight again, as he suffered some brain bleeding in his fight against Jirov. Which is a shame, because he was fun to watch, even if not exactly the best fighter out there. And he is to Buffalo what Ricky Hatton is to Manchester.

Mesi's future is in the hands of the experts now -- he has submitted what is claimed to be his comprehensive medical records. A decision should be rendered relatively soon.

Personally, I don't care for him as a fighter... but it would be a shame for his career to end on such a sour note when he was so close to achieving every fighter's dream.

According to the recent ESPN the Magazine article, if any state bans Mesi due to their medical findings he'll be unable to fight in the US. However, Mesi made it clear that he thinks he's fine, with a noted Boston neurosurgeon backing him up, and the would continue to fight in Canada or Europe.
