Well, the Pats are in, and until proven to be an unsafe choice, I will put money on the Pats this season. Each time they went before I didnt, and have finally learned. Two weeks is too long for Bilicheck to plan and scheme, and his players respond.

Yeah, but it must've taken AT LEAST three or four days out of that week to get his hair ready.

My problem with the Patriots is that, for as good as they are, I hate them. Every week Tom Brady comes out and praises the team and praises Belichek and he's so humble and yuck!!! They're like Rocky Maivia. (Actually, I do like the Visa commercial with Dillon et al going "Not in our house," cuz they actually show some attitude beyond the nice guy bullshit... Actually, I may not hate the whole team. Just Brady.)

It is nice for Philly to finally make it to the Super Bowl. Especially after all the talk last week of how unstoppable Vick was. As an Eagles fan, the next two weeks will be great.

Though I'm not kidding myself about what is going to happen on the 6th...

As an aside regarding Roethlisberger, was it just me or did he show up in two new commercials this week? (A Campbells soup one and the Nike warrior one?) When were these filmed? Cuz I'm thinking he should have spent a little more time practicing and waited to cash in on his success until after the season.

Fly Eagles Fly!!!

I've seen that Campbell's rookie soup advert mid-season. I saw Ben's one and Carrol(?)'s from Green Bay.

Pieman, that's just it. As a Panthers fan living in North Carolina, I see lots of media (local and otherwise) which absolutely adores the Patriots. The team DOES NOT get short changed on a national level, and I'm just beginning to think that this is some New Englander mental blind spot, where everybody up there thinks that they only get to see something about the Patriots every 5 minutes because they live there.

Maybe you think they play that "Not in our House" Visa commercial every commercial break only in New England? Or only during the Patriots games? WRONG. I swear to god I didn't think anything could ever make me hate UofA superstar Tedy Bruschi, but the Patriots have done it. I root for him to go out and lose every single time they take the field because I am SO SICK of having the Pats on my TV all day long. You New England guys must be used to it, as they're your hometown team, but it seems that Pats are getting just as much air time everywhere else in the country as they do in Boston.

Oh and RevJShaft? I think the "Sports Guy = Tony Montana" comparison in the last letter is hitting the nail on the head even more than the Yankees thing. I see Yankees commercials almost as much as Patriots commercials down here, but the Yankees fans just assume it's their due in the world to be forced down everyone's throats. The Pats fans just complain that because they're disliked they must not be forced down enough throats.

They've got to gush over someone. I don't like to hear about one team all the time either, but here's the thing: would you rather have them gush over a team that DOESN'T deserve it? That's why it doesn't bother me as much.

What do I hate worse: the Patriots love-in, or the Iggles and their victim mentality (Pity us! We've lost in the NFC championship THREE STRAIGHT YEARS! We're CUUUUUURSED)?

Pats take it in a walk that gives Philly something to ACTUALLY complain about.

(Rationality may or may not have been involved in the above pick.)

That was much more of a Favre-esque performance by Ben than a Kordell-esque performance. If anything, maybe Randle-El the next Stewart - with the big difference of not deluding himself that a college option QB can play the same position in the NFL.

I would've gone for it on 4th down too, but we were str8 up owned the whole game long. I think Aaron Smith's holding penalty on the 3rd-and-17 screen was far more crucial in keeping it out of reach.

There is one way in which I could envision an Eagles win over the Patriots, but it would require them to move away from the West Coast philosophy and play almost a straight up George Blanda'ish Raider philosophy. If they rely on the short passing game over the middle, they are screwed, because they play right into the Patriots strength, and the linebackers will either pick off 2 passes or they throw into traffic and a few tipped balls end up in the hands of a safety. The weakness for the Patriots is deep outside the numbers. Between the numbers is where the Patriot defense thrives. Basically, have McNabb drop back and chuck the bomb all game. 13 for 34 for 280 gives them a far better shot than 20 for 34 for 167 and 2 picks. The deep ball was how Carolina came from behind last year. I don't see the Eagles abandoning their gameplan they've used all year though. Patriots 37 Eagles 13.

To whom?

T.O. isn't going to be at 100%, Westbrook isn't a wide receiver per se, Chad Lewis is hurt and won't play, and Pinkston and Mitchell aren't exactly known for getting deep-route separation.

I think you're thinking of the "Mad Bomber" Daryle LaMonica. Of course, any chance to work in an old Raiders reference makes me happy.

I think you hit the nail on the head. I'm a big Pats fan, but I could do without the barrage of Pats celebration and acknowledgement. The problem is, there's really no alternative. Once you take out the Michael Vick, Peyton Manning, and Mrs. McNabb ads, there are really only two consistent national ads: Eagles and Pats ads. (Just a note: I am fully sick of the Vick, Manning and Momma McNabb ads, too, even though I like Manning and Mrs. McNabb seems like a neat lady.) There are a lot of people in ads, but only two teams.

I think the problem in the age of parity is that ad dollars flow to the front runner for one year. The only trouble is that there really aren't any alternatives to the Pats or Eagles. You can't take the Super Bowl Champion Buccaneers, because they imploded. So did their opponent, the Raiders. The Rams are horribly inconsistent. The Panthers did a good job this year, but on the national level, many people just saw struggle. So no non-fans are going to think positively of them in an ad and associate positively with a product. What we're left with is individuals. Favre, Manning, Michael Strahan, Roethlisberger, Ray Lewis, etc. Those guys get ads and promo spots just fine.

I don't think anyone would be as sick of the Pats ads if there were alternatives. In the 80s, you could run national ads featuring the Bears, the Niners, the Redskins and the Giants, and no one would bat an eye, because they were all contenders. But right now the only two teams that people, nationally, recognize as winners are the Pats and Eagles. If Carolina had made it to the playoffs, or if the Buccaneers had made it to divisional games these last two years, I think the ratio of Pats Ads to Ads Featuring Other teams would be a lot more even.

If they win this year, I'd like to apologize in advance for the promotional hell that next season will be. Until someone unseats them, they're the team to beat in marketing time, too.

Growing up (yeah I know, a LOOOONG time ago), we always fought over who was going to be Daryle Lamonica. He loved to throw the deep ball. I went and looked him up, for old time's sake. 49.5% completion percentage, but a couple years with 30 TDs!

Hey, I'm far from being a fully signed up member of the Freddie Mitchell fan club (which probably means membership still stands at roughly one), but he did everything he had to Sunday. Ran good routes, didn't make any glaring errors, blocked pretty well as and when required.

In a nutshell he did exactly what he was asked to do and put in a good shift for the team. I was fairly sure that fitted the definition of 'solid'. Geez could we maybe agree on 'dependable' instead or something? Yeesh...

Westbrook's plenty fast enough and talented enough to cause the Pats secondary problems deep in its current depleted state, and LJ Smith is a much better long threat than Chad. Greg Lewis is also showing signs of being a viable long threat, and if TO plays and New England are happy to give him less attention because they reckon he's not 100% I'm all for that.

Throwing the bomb all game would be dumb as hell as it would hand the Pats enough posession to throttle the life out of us, but we certainly should take chances now and again. The Pats corners are the one weakness in their D and really have to be tested.

I dunno...they shut down Manning and the Colts, and then the Steelers and their wides, and I'd take either group of them before I'd take the Eagles wideouts, with or without Owens.

Right. Because, God knows, we need more assholes like T.O. and Randy Moss in professional football. I just hate it when Brady gives credit to his teammates for good games and takes blame off of them when they play badly. I'd much rather have my kids look up to spotlight-stealing grandstanders than class acts. Don't be ridiculous.

You're just jealous.

I never praised Owens or Moss anywhere. My feelings towards Brady are independent of everyone else. I agree that Brady is the better role model, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. This all probably does stem from some sort of jealousy. I just have a hard time believing that he doesn't look in the mirror sometimes and think to himself, "You know what? I have two super bowl MVP rings. I AM the man!" which is the exact image he does not portray on camera. I'm probably being overly cynical in thinking that though.

Down, boy. First of all, he was being sardonic. Second of all, it goes without saying that people are and should be jealous of NE's success -- who wouldn't be. Third of all, I don't think there's anything wrong with poking fun at dorky behavior. In the name of fun, I myself have given 'the business' to my beloved friend Ben Roethlisberger for being too nice and upstanding a guy.
