Tremendous episode.

Whoever's keeping track of the Jack Bauer Official Bodycount, what is it, 17? Certainly a "mark-out moment" when Jack shot up all them guys.

I love Heller more every week. Authorizing the softcore torture of his pansy-ass hippie son... beautiful. Doesn't look like a meaningful plot thread, but I get a laugh out his overwrought screaming. What's the most we'll find out, though? Some lefty protest group he was in has some small tie to the terrorists? Seems like anything he knows is obsolete, now. But, we'll see.

So, Mary Ann works for the bad guys. Does she work for the Islamic fellows, or for their shadowy Teutonic overlords? Again, we'll see.

Next week!: Jack breaks into every nuclear power plant in America, with Chloe and the incredible Edgar Styles! How many of them will die? I say... Chloe. Just a guess, as it would be a bit of a curveball.

The first ten minutes of this episode will not be topped this year.

Except, perhaps, by the appearance of John Beard, the LA-area Fox announcer, as the Fox News anchor reporting on Heller's condition. It was rather unsettling seeing the frequent guest on Arrested Development pop up on a slightly much more serious program.

Aisha Tyler as a terrorist mole is just too hard to stomach. How would they know she'd secure access (since she didn't gain Erin's approval until after everything got kickstarted,) or is she just extra insurance? I was hoping for no moles.

What of Erin's daughter? How could they dare ignore such an important B-plot D-plot?

They needed to stop doing the Mole bit after, uh, the first one. Not even Nina, Jamey was a mole in the first set of episodes. This is droll.

Don't forget Gael in season 3 who was a mole too...though an undercover mole that's really good .

This is the first episode of 24 I've seen. My main thought is that whoever said Hollywood had a liberal bias ought to be shown this series.

Anyway, is there any important backstory from the previous seasons I should know about?

Fun fact: in the AD episode earlier this year when the military was passing around pictures of Tobias' balls, there was originally intended to be a brief shot of Jack and Tony looking at some documents during the montage. It was taken out since apparently the AD guys didn't want to get 'that' self-referential.

I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? There is a larger backstory from other seasons that might be mildly useful to you at some point, but as far as things you've missed in the first several hours, here are some things to note:

Chloe is a holdover from previous seasons. She didn't appear in this week's episode, but from the teaser, I think she's back next week. She's head computer geek at CTU, I believe, and the only CTU employee who has previously worked with Jack Bauer. Her continuing loyalty to Bauer, and not new head Driscoll, has been a recurring theme.

Driscoll fired Bauer. This was mentioned only in passing in the first episode, but there it is. The stated reason for the firing was that she "didn't want an ex-junkie on her staff..."

...referring to Jack's heroin habit, acquired off-camera between seasons 2-3. while he was undercover with a drug ring in... Colombia I think. He kicked the habit without much in the way of plot complications by the end of the season.

The current president, Keeler, ran against Seasons 1-3's president, David Palmer. Palmer chose not to seek re-election, however, after some shady dealings involving his shady (and now deceased) ex-wife, Sherry.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope that helps!

Wow, what a great episode. I have to say I was cheering when Jack shot the "executioner" and then later when the Marines showed up. Very cool first ten minutes.

So the whole part about Jack not working at CTU anymore is basically out the window. Welcome back, youre obviously the only one who can save us, which should be part of the CTU policy from now on. "When in doubt, let Jack take care of it, no matter who's in charge, be it Mason, Chappell, Dickinson, whoever." I thought it was a good wrapup to the first quarter of the season, and started out at least a couple new plotlines, including Behroos growing a pair and killing a dude with a shovel.

I like the fact that Mary Ann is a mole. You need at least one a season and it goes perfect with her philosophy of doing anything to get ahead. It will also make the dymanmic between her and Curtis much better as he will start to suspect her and maybe get to exact his revenge. Although my money is on her using sex to get back in his good graces again and then using/killing him.

I'm not sure if they're gonna go the route where Audrey's husband is involved with the terrorists. It would be another real easy thing for the writers to do along with making Mary Ann a mole. But while I like the mole development, I'd rather not have the husband be a terrorist.
However, I wouldn't mind if he got so pissed at Audrey for leaving him for Jack that he did join the terrorists.

I thought about the ex-husband being in cahoots with the terrorsts. He seemed iffy in more ways than just "desperate ex-husband."

I don't know how to feel to about Mary Ann. I'm not sure I have any reason to buy her as being with the terrorists. She's evil, no doubt, but a terrorist? Nah.

So yeah, Jack pretty much just blasted those guys, now didn't he? Kind of like a video game. A very cool video game.

Good to see that Driscoll is finally starting to feel the awesomeness that is Jack Bauer. Also quite heartwarming to see Jack back as head of field ops. Ronnie who?

Was I the only one thinking that Jack shouldn't have wasted so much time making goo-goo eyes with Audrey in the compuund when he only had six minutes before, you know, the bombs started?

The secretary of defense looked pretty comfortable with his weaponry. Awesome.

Good to see Behrooz start to turn face. He always was a tweener.

And the fact that the Heller execution was all a swerver to enact a bigger plan -- nothing short of brilliant. (Though can someone explain what exactly they accomplished by overloading the internet with all of that traffic?)

Damn good episode, though at I don't think it was the best of the season. Then again, I've thought that they've all been really, really good.

The PLAN seems to be that they captured Heller in order to put his trial on the internet so they could use the confusion to hack into all the nuclear power plants. Seems really complicated but hey it's 24.

Not that I followed what happened all that closely, but I can't see all those nuclear plants being connected to the internet even in a fictitous world. (This is where someone provides a link to a nuclear plant proving me wrong.)

I think what they did was they needed the combined processing power of a bunch of computers to be able to crack the code on that device in the brief case to be able to connect to the nuclear plants. This something like SETI or Folding@home. Problem is that on a normal day, if people were using that much bandwidth, someone would notice. But with the Heller video being broadcast, they were able to figure out what they needed.

Behrooz Araz just got a lot more interesting this episode. I guess Navi didn't want to take any chances and called his cell's version of Winston Wolf to take care of the problem. My only problem, though, is that Tariq was more Harvey Korman than Harvey Kietel. I mean, what kind of enforcer would turn his back on a guy who was, you know, holding a shovel and had pretty much figured out what was going on?

Anyway, aside from that, the scene in the desert was awesome. The gun firing just as Behrooz smacked it away, the shovel beatdown, and the look of realization on his face was gold.

Yeah, the incompetence of Tariq was something. Sure, let's just stick this pistol in the wasistband of our pants, here, where no one will see it. That's what he gets for being too lazy to dig the grave himself.

And, just because I'm curious about it, it seems you've got the official spelling of Behrooz there.

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1332975/

There's IMDB's page for Jonathan Ahdout, who plays him.

[Edit: And Marwan, the big boss, is played by the Mummy himself, Arnold Vosloo.]

Think he'll kill his dad next week? I sure hope he does, eventually. The dad is kinda useless anyway, and utterly unconvincing as a native of the Middle East. I'm sure they could kill him without disrupting any real terrorist plans, so Jack would still have plenty to do.

And a spoiler warning, because I'm a butthead: In looking up the names of "24" guest stars, I noticed that IMDB has them listed several episodes ahead. So don't read them if you don't want to know.

I thought they're supposed to be Turkish - and Turks generally look a lot closer to Daddy Araz than to Behrooz (or all the other guys).

Was I the only one that thought Robert Davi (of Goonies and Showgirls fame) was the guy in charge of the trial?

FYI... You might have seen the tribute that aired at the end of the show: "This episode is dedicated to the memory of Lt. Col. Dave Greene of the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 775. ... His sacrifice, and the sacrifice of all our men and women of the military, will never be forgotten."

Apparently, the show used real Marines when filming Heller's rescue. Among the troops was Greene, who died in Iraq a couple of months later.
