To be fair, couldn't any Minnesota player pretty much take what you said and turn it back on you:

"Aw, whats the matter, did the individual solitary football player take the mickey out of the thousands of baying drunken fans who had been heckling him for the past two hours. Green Bay fans, WE DON'T LIKE YOU EITHER. But then we don't want to see you beaten senseless, we just want to poke a little fun at you now and again."

"Leave it to the Minnesota Vikings to whine about fan comments. Try SACKING UP and not letting it bother you."

But they kinda were. The only reason they even mentioned the Green Bay fans is that quite a few seem to have got into a tizzy over Moss's actions. They're not whining, all they're saying is, if you give it, you've got to take a little back.

I admit I have little love for the Pack, but I'd say exactly the same if the Eagles were on the receiving end.
Heck my first real memory of 'taunting' in the NFL was in a playoff game against the Cowboys back in the early 90's (1992?).

Eagles player scores TD, celebrates, Dallas player gets in his face and points to scoreboard. Did it bother me? A little, but damn, we got cuffed, they earned the right to rub it in.

And as StaggerLee pointed out, pretending to moon is hardly a heinous crime. Heck I've seen Bart pull plenty moons on the Simpsons and never seen any clamour about the corruption of our youth.

This has been blown out of all proportion simply because of the player involved. If it was a relatively low profile player that did it it would barely rate a mention.

See also the media reaction to Roman's ludicrous tirade directed at Ahmad Carroll, as compared to their reaction when TO gave McNabb a pep talk.

Sho'nuff, and that happened in Green Bay, too. I think it was towards the Packers' bench and not the fans, though.

No, that was a KC player who wrapped a towel around himself (while on the sidelines) and took a leak right then and there. Another was going to do the same, but backed down based on the "expressions" of the fans behind their bench.

That may be true too, but a Chief did the "leg lift" celebration during a MNF game at Green Bay about 10 years ago.

It was actually a Monday Night game in KC. Bennie Thompson sacked Favre (he was playing in '93, right?) and to celebrate got down and all fours and lifted his leg. http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/columnists/10614088.htm

Someone asked about what Buck's actual verbiage was...

He said, ". . . And Randy moss has just shot the moon! I'm sorry we had to have that crass act on our airwaves. . ."

Now, can I be forgiven, not actually seeing the incident, but rather justing hearing Buck, for thinking that Moss actually mooned the crowd until I saw the footage on PTI?

And, not to be a Brett Favre apologist, but that Illegal Forward Pass was pretty Hi-larious, don't you think?

Yeah, that pass WAS pretty funny, but the thing is, if that had been any other QB in the NFL, the announcers would have been all over how boneheaded of a play it was. Instead, we have Collinsworth being all, "Oh, what's that CARRAZZZZYYY Brett up to now?" and go on for the next half hour about how great a play it was.

For professional football players to actually worry about getting even with fans, DURING A PLAYOFF GAME, is ludicrous and very un-professional...pretty much the definition of Randy Moss. Scoreboard or no, it's just stupid.

Again, the Vikes should've stopped worrying about the karmic balance ("Oh snap, the Packer fans got over on us, we've got to craft a response") and maybe worried about the game, or the 11 guys in green-and-gold across from 'em. True, they got the job done, but that kind of approach to the game sure ain't gonna get you past Philly.

Hell, at least Packer fans aren't flat-out EVIL. Sometimes, you gotta wonder about the folks in Iggles jerseys at Lincoln Financial. It is an ECW crowd, after all. :-)

I'm with Roman on this one...Carroll's two stupid penalties kept that Minnesota drive alive and helped 'em ice the ballgame. One more season like this and Carroll is officially a flop, nearly on a Mandarich-type level.

Hey, I agree with you for the most part. I don't think what Moss did was particularly big, clever or funny. But I don't think it was a case of Moss paying too much attention to the fans. You'd be hard pushed to ignore them at times, and he probably just reacted on the spur of the moment.

And besides its not like the guys in green and gold gave him much to worry about other than the crowd [/cheapdig]

More misunderstood than evil. Its just that while most teams hate ONE rival, we hate, well, everyone. Except maybe the Bengals. Hating them would just seem like piling on

I don't disagree that Carroll had a sucky game, its just the contrasting responses to the two incidents that amuse me. After the Steelers game there must have been at least 5 columns about the TO/McNabb incident on ESPN.com alone, many of them crowing about how TO had proven the columnist was right all along in his assertion that TO was a waste of space.

What Roman did was MUCH worse because:

a) Carroll's a rookie, and less able to cope with it than McNabb, a veteran and team leader

and

b) TO's pep talk was far more mild, even if you don't accept the post match excuse that it was just an effort to gee up McNabb

And heck, McNabb was awful in Pittsburgh.

Like I say, it just bugs me that people react so vehemently to anything that involves a Moss or a TO and yet are quick to overlook indiscretions of others.

With a bit of luck though, Moss's post TD antics won't be a concern some Sunday night.

I think your green-and-gold glasses are clouding you're judgment a bit. I think what Moss did was spontaneous TD-excitement-leading-to-HAHAMOTHERFUCKERSLOOKATMYBUM, not something he really spent much time preplanning like Joe Horn and his cellphone.

Is it as ludicrous and unprofessional as, let's say, flying in a fifth-string wide receiver from a last-place football team and having a ceremony to give him the key to the city of Green Bay? Hardly.

The Packers and their fans and everybody at Fox thought that the Pack was just going to roll right through Minnesota (which would have given us a Favre/Vick matchup in Round 2 where the play-by-play would have just been replaced with 3 hours of slurping noises). So, they needed something to be angry about. Thank goodness Moss gave it to them, huh?

And as far as classless and unprofessional:

http://us.news2.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/nm/20050110/mdf817826.jpg

Let me guess: Favre is just trying to help Willie Offord with his contact lens, right? Not trying to shove a finger in his eye or anything like that. Certainly not.

OK, NOW this is getting ridiculous:
-------------------------------------------------
McCombs wants Fox's Buck off Vikings-Eagles telecast
Wednesday January 12, 2005
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) Fox Sports turned down Vikings owner Red McCombs' request to remove play-by-play announcer Joe Buck from Sunday's game at Philadelphia over his criticism of Randy Moss.

After Moss caught a touchdown pass in last weekend's win at Green Bay, the wide receiver celebrated by pretending to pull down his pants and moon Packers fans. Buck immediately called it a ``disgusting act.''

McCombs said that statement was out of line. A two-sentence news release issued by the team said McCombs felt Buck's comments ``suggested a prejudice that surpassed objective reporting.''

Dan Bell, a Fox spokesman, said Wednesday the network has ``no intention whatsoever'' of removing Buck.

McCombs, whose office is in San Antonio, was not immediately available for further comment.

Buck, during an interview on Sporting News Radio earlier this week, stood by his criticism.

``I have nothing against Randy Moss,'' Buck said. ``I don't even know the guy. I just know that with the history that he's had, and coming off that game at Washington, it was just stunning to see that.''

Moss walked off the field in frustration while his teammates lined up for an onside kick with 2 seconds left the previous week in a 21-18 loss to the Redskins.
--------------------------------------------

I honestly can't see how McCombs can be serious about this. It HAS to be a publicity stunt. I knew Red was an idiot, but good Lord.

Uh, that wasn't the Packers. That was Green Bay mayor Jim Schmitt trying to get a little free publicity out of the miraculous 'Zona/Vikes finish that iced the '03 NFC North championship for the Pack. Hell, even ESPN put that thing on the air.

Remember...fact-checking is your friend.

Can't say I'm groovy with that one...but it was during that on-field altercation...unlike that one Viking several years back who came up from the secondary seeking Frank Winters, and poking his eye well after the play. It's nothing new when these two teams get together. But at least it's players vs. players, not players scheming about a way to get under paying customers' skin...which is just dumb, dumb, dumb.

Let me guess. . .at absolutely no point, in any way, shape, or form, could Mike Sherman or Bob Harlan have stepped in and said, "No, Mr. Mayor, please don't do that because we're above that sort of thing?"

No matter who was responsible for it, it was still fairly classless and unprofessional.

Z, I'm sorry, but there really aren't a whole lot of people in MN who trust Red. I don't know if you ever listen to 93X, but every morning Randy Shaver, the sports anchor from KARE 11 is on from 7:35-7:55 am, and this morning they were talking about this. Hell, even HE said that, yes, this is a little bit of Red supporting his player/team, BUT, with Red's history in this state, we really don't know how to take it. Is he supporting his player? Could be. Could it be that he really is serious? If so, what the hell is he thinking. Did he REALLY think FOX would not let Buck announce the game? Is he using it as a publicity stunt? It really does wreak of it. If so, why should I care? It all comes down to most people in Minnesota really have a great disliking for Red. That's all. Just HEARING his name raises the hair on the back of our neck. Sell the damned team to Glen Taylor, take your stupid purple pimp blazer and get out of the state, thankyewveddymuch.

Sorry. Another tangent there.

Looks like Moss is gonna get fined $10K, according to Chris Mortensen on ESPN.com.

Sounds like money well spent to me. More publicity, making Packer fans whine, and (supposed) team solidarity.
