EA continues it's rout of professional sports.

And I bet they don't do anything with it. They just want to make sure Sega doesn't.

Man, Sega's really getting shafted here. At this point, I'm really hoping they make a kick-ass NCAA game.

As far as EA trying to take over the sports world, their initial offer to the NBA was rejected. But there's still time to take over those sports as well...meaning Sega isn't screwed, but they'll have to simply be more creative.

Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, I'll note that every indication and rumor seems to say that it was the AFL that approached EA and asked them if they would make the Arena Football game. What are they supposed to say? "Oh no, we're not interested in making any money with you, Sorry. Try Sega, I hear they might be free soon."

I hope they will link up the AFL game with Madden, just like how you can draft the class from the NCAA game.

I think it would be neat if you could sign away a hot star from the AFL into Madden during the off-season.

Damn. I thought the title meant that EA would be making an Australian Rules Football game. I'll just keep dreaming...

Thanks for a great season, Pick of the Week fans...see you next year at Planet Magic in Denmark, WI!

Don't worry, Sega will set the world on fire when they resurrect the "Great! Football" series.

Or bring us an XFL game. C'mon, you know you wanna play as He Hate Me...

The unintentional comedy of that game would be off the charts. Quipping back at the locker room interviews alone would make it worth it.

Yeah, it's not like EA has the rights to that huh?

Or not indeed.

While the deal promises that an AFL game will be ready for the market by the start of the 2006 season, the agreement is more than just about fun and games. It also "allows EA to share in the proceeds of future expansion team sales," effectively giving EA financial interest in the league beyond the gaming aspect.

Wow. I wonder how this is going to fit in between Street (which is essentially AFL play) and Madden. It's not like AFL would be excited to be a minor-league in the NFL game. I just don't see the AFL fitting a successful niche with the other fooball products EA's putting out.

Figures that the Arena Football League doesn't get a video game until after my Indiana Firebirds go defunct. Curses and drat!

The AFL itself is a live-action video game, so it'd fit right in.

Heh. Not that it means anything to Anyone Not Named Me, but I completely screwed with Madden 2002's custom team/schedule feature and ran a CFL "inVasion" angle a few years ago. Jeff Lewis led the Toronto Argonauts to the Super Bowl. I went old school and made sure to have TWO Roughrider teams (I know, I know...one was "Rough Riders" and the other "Roughriders"). Yes, I have no friends and too much free time.

I think the AFL has a working agreement with the NFL. They don't see each other as competitors, exactly. AFL shouldn't feel slighted by having their rosters linked to Madden. It'd be a good move actually, with built-in cross-game promotion.

I'd imagine an AFL game would also have the smaller market "afl2" teams, the same way Madden has the NFL Europe teams. If you're happy, I'm sure you could even make your own Professional Indoor Football League teams. Anyone remember THAT?!

Everything I've heard is that the game is great if you can get past the online requirements... which some people apparently have. (eurogamer.net)
