As expected, Peyton Manning (sportsillustrated.cnn.com) is the MVP, winning 47 of 48 votes. This, of course, begs the question of who was the moron who cast a vote for anyone other than Peyton? Especially when said vote was for Michael Vick.

I guess you could make a case for Michael Vick. Look how shitty the Falcons were last year when he was injured and compare that to this season. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that he is the catalyst for that team and their success. But he did struggle at times this year, learning the West Coast Offense under a new head coach. But when it came down to it, he got the job done.

And it doesn't hurt that he is the NFL's Poster Boy.

Garbage. The biggest reason for the Falcons' success this season was the fact that Mora Jr. is a good coach, their defense really stepped up, and they had an easier schedule thanks to their craptastic finish last year. Vick, quite honestly, is not that great a quarterback; there are at least a half dozen guys I'd take over him, maybe more. He can run like the blazes, but if they count on him to just drop back and pass, cross yer fingers.

I'm interested in selling my youngest daughter into slavery as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. She's a Georgetown sophomore, speaks fluent Italian, always cleared the table when it was her turn. What would a good price for her be? While thinking about that, can I ask another? My Chief of Staff Leo McGarry insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly says he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself or is it okay to call the police? Here's one that's really important because we've got a lot of sports fans in this town: touching the skin of a dead pig makes one unclean. Leviticus 11:7. If they promise to wear gloves, can the Washington Redskins still play football? Can Notre Dame? Can West Point? Does the whole town really have to be together to stone my brother John for planting different crops side by side? Can I burn my mother in a small family gathering for wearing garments made from two different threads? Think about those questions, would you? One last thing: while you may be mistaking this for your monthly meeting of the Ignorant Tight-Ass Club, in this building, when the President stands, nobody sits." --- President Jed Bartlett, The West Wing

That's true, but he does lead his team to a win. Some credit to Mora, sure, but personnel wise they are very similar to what they were a year ago. Vick makes a huge difference with that team, and I think he's in the conversation for league MVP...that's most valuable player, not best player with the best stats.

Would I vote for anyone but Manning this year? No way. The man had an incredible season, led his team to a 12-3 record in games they tried to win, and made 1000 yard/10 TD receivers out of three guys simultaneously. Take him away and that team struggles to win six games with that defense. That's the MVP, and that type of landslide in voting is probably fair.

    new head coach.

That MIGHT'VE had something to do with it too, as well as the new defensive scheme they implimented, and the team staying healthy.

EDIT: BigBad beat me to it.

And I think that if the Pats hadn't blown it against the Dolphins, you could've made a really strong case for Corey Dillon. But that ship sailed.

No chance. The Pats were formidable without Dillon, so while he definately improves the offense, you can't really argue the team would be significantly worse off without him. You know I'd say Rodney Harrison has a better case than Dillon for being the one constant in a secondary that's been absolutely destroyed by injuries. The coaching staff deserve credit for keeping things going, but that shouldn't take away from the phenomenal job Harrison did this year.

I can almost see how you could make a case for Vick, as he really does make the Falcons a threat to anyone. Without him they've got a very good TE, good D, and a couple of above average backs but not much else.

Similarly I could see how there could be an argument for McNabb. Without him we'd be .500 if we're lucky.

Really though there's only one guy who deserves the title this year and he got it.

This coming Sunday, my pathetic Denver Broncos are traveling just south of Mount Lombardi to play the Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers on their hallowed frozen tundra. On paper it appears that it will not be pretty.
