Fine...I guess I'm just old.

I've learned to accept the "look at me" celebrations...it's just the ones that say to the fans "You Suck" seem out of line given that without the fans, they don't get paid lots and lots of money to play a game.

Just my opinion...

I agree with you cran, and I'm a relative youngun myself. There's a fine line between actual celebrations, and simply goading or mocking the fans. The last time I checked, the fans a) paid tickets to watch a game b) paid to respond to the game, towards their team, if the team does well or poorly and c) kids ARE at the games as well. They aren't in the game themselves, they aren't playing against the away team, and they have little-no effect on the outcome of the game in the first place. It's behavior like Moss' that leads to horrid, regrettable incidents like the Pacer crowd brawl. Celebrate, yes, but trash talking or mocking the crowd itself is not only off the mark but stupid. Players should especially stray away from "celebrations" that cause one of the kids in the crowd to turn to their dad and go "Why did that player show us his butt?"

I didn't like it and I thought it was classless, but hey, the sun still came up today. There's been a lot worse on TV.

Joe Buck made a WAAAAY bigger deal of it than it should have been, stating that "he couldn't believe that it aired on their network." ... The same network that brought you such classy shows as "Who's Your Daddy" & "The Littlest Groom".

But guys like Moss do take dogs abuse from fans most time they go away. It doesn't really matter to me how much the fans paid to see the game or how much Moss GETS paid to play it. He still has a right to give a little back within reason.

Theres a vast difference between playfully pretending to moon the crowd and delivering a right hook to an unsuspecting member of the crowd.

If Moss's celebration last night led to a brawl that would be the fault of (probably drunken), overly aggresive morons, period.

If you're going to take your kid out to a night game against one of your arch rivals where you know a large proprtion of the crowd are going to be a) drunk, and b) riled up, I dare say having him see a player pretend to moon someone will be the least of your worries.

But then I've only ever been to the Vet, so my frame of reference may be squiffy ;)

Lost in this debate is the fact that Moss didn't moon the crowd. He pulled down his pants and wiped his ass with the Green Bay goalposts (or pretended to). That doesn't negate the "classless" argument, but it does make the "he's attacking the fans" idea moot.

Well, Tice's Monday press conference just got done, and one of the reporters asked Tice about Moss' mooning, to which he replied:
"I have no comment. I didn't see it happen at the time, as a matter of fact I didn't see it until last night. I am going to let the NFL handle it if they want to do anything, beyond that, I have no comment. You know, all some of you people want to do is dig, dig, dig. You should read some of your own columns Bob (Sansvere). Stop being so negative."
Honestly, if this had been T.O that had done this, they'd laugh and say, "Can't wait to see what they carazzy guy dones next!", and don't say "T.O would NEVER do THAT~!" , cuz I'd call bullshit on that in a heartbeat, and y'all know it.
Also, after watching the news last night, and listening to the sports radio announcers this morning, almost all of them have mentioned how the Packer fans at Lambeau yesterday were RABID from the get-go, and when the Vikes came out of the gate liek they did, it went downhill in a hurry. A local Sports Anchor was on the sidelines yesterday, and he couldn't believe he stuff that was being said by the fans to the Vikings players who were standing there. One theory thrown out is that the crowd wasn't the usual season ticket holders. I can believe this cuz when I went to Lambeau in September (when the Bears beat them in their home opener), I wore my Hovan jersey and Vikes hat, and got NOWHERE NEAR the amount of shit I expected. It actually wsa a very pleasant experience, with a few Packer fans patting me on the back and giving me a few lighthearted ribs. The crowd I experienced can not be the same crowd that showed up yesterday, unless the Packer fans are getting a bit disenheartened with their franchise. yes, they ended the season on an upnote, but that is NOT how they started, and the doubt is there. They have been spoiled for so long with their team doing so well. Now, with Favre being in doubt (wether they talk about his ability starting to wane, or him retiring), they may be starting to get a bit nervous, and with the (GB/MN) rivalry being the way it has been, (bringing out the best/worst in each other), after the way the game went, it brought out the worst in them.

Well, that ramble went a helluva lot longer than I expected.

-edit- Oh, and how come I haven't heard anything about the 30-50 Packer fans that waited around for the Vikes bus to leave last night and mooned the bus as it left? And they're calling Moss classless.

The other thing I found extremely humorous was the complete clusterfuck that was the end of the first half. Farve is scrambling, and based on our TiVo review, it looked like he would've gotten the first down, if not the touchdown. Instead, he flips the ball into the endzone, four yards ahead of the line of scrimmage. After the penalty, they missed the field goal.

Now, had that been any other quarterback in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE, the announcers would rightfully railing on the quarterback for making a boneheaded play, losing a down, and backing the team up five yards. Instead, they're laughing, falling back on their lame "oh look at Brett-he's just running around out there, having a good 'ol time" routine. Insane.

I personally thought that Al Harris not being able to cover a guy with a bum ankle and Favre throwing four picks were pretty offensive, but that's just me. Count me in on the side that what Moss did was no big deal... after all, although seemingly everybody on ESPN and FOX was shocked and appalled by Moss's actions, they keep talking about it. He pretended, PRETENDED, to moon the crowd and suddenly everybody's in an uproar about it? It wasn't that bad... the NFL is out of touch if they expect every single player to not have personalities and simply shake hands and hug after every play. Showsmanship is part of the game, and it attracts more attention... whether you perceive Moss as a jackass for doing it, or see it as a funny touchdown celebration; people are talking about it.

And then there was Chris Berman on NFL Primetime last night. He took a big sigh, glanced to the heavens and intoned, basically "Randy Moss disrespected Lambeau Field and himself." Um...Chris? It's a football stadium. I doubt it got its feelings hurt. That ranks right up there with Christopher Moltisanti saying "DO NOT DISRESPECT THE PIZZA PARLOR!"

And I agree with the earlier statement about Favre's little toss when he was FOUR YARDS past the line of scrimmage. If Randy Moss celebrating after a touchdown is disrespectful to the game and the fans, then how is Favre making an absolutely boneheaded play that potentially cost his team a touchdown _ he had a shot at the first down _ and then laughing about it not disrespectful?

Moss was just making an ass (pun intended) of himself as does anyone who does their little dances after they score TDs. I thought it was hilarious myself, but results may vary.

HOWEVER, before all the Cheeseheads get in hysterics (save for Sec19Row53), consider the following excerpt from this Yahoo! story:

Indianapolis Colts (news) coach Tony Dungy said he saw Moss' action and, "I thought it was kind of humorous."

"It's not the kind of thing you want to see on national TV, but I understand what it was all about," he said.

"Anyone who has played in the NFC Central knows what that's about. The fans in Green Bay have a tradition in the parking lot after the game where they moon the visiting team's bus," he said. "It's kind of a unique send-off."

"I had seen it seven times because when I was with the Vikings, we lost to them seven times up there," he said.

Not hysterical about it at all. I didn't really react at that, I was too pissed at my team. I don't find it indignant, outrageous, or anything else. Did I like it? Not really, but if we kept him out of the end zone, it wouldn't have happened.

Regarding the mooning the bus thing - I've never heard of it happening, and it would seem like that is something that would be discussed ('yeah, I stuck around long enough to moon the Vikings bus this week - there were 30 other people who did it'). However, since Wayne Larrivee of the Packer radio network said the same thing today on the Dan Patrick show, I'll believe that it has happened. That being the case, if this was Moss' response to it having happened before, IT'S FUNNY AS ALL HELL!

Judging by that quote again, if he heard that, would that stop him from doing it again? All those signs in Lambeau, all those people booing and saying I suck, which seems a whole hell of a lot more disrespectful than pretending to pull my pants down, I would have done worse than pantomime a mooning. It isn't as if he did a Ron Artest and hurled the TD pass he caught at some drunk fans in the front row, he just acknowledged that he heard every one of them booing. Crying about Moss's endzone dance is a lot easier than shutting up because an injured reciever scored a nail-in-the-coffin TD and Brett Favre threw one too many picks. Believe it or not, I was rooting for Green Bay.

I am also under the firm belief that Joe Buck is employed by FOX if only because he is the absolute worst announcer in the history of sports and will overreact to absolutely anything as if it's the most shocking thing he's ever heard. That guy could watch snails cross the sidewalk and make it sound like it was something that needed to be replayed.

Now comes this:

NFL Considers Fine For Moss' Mooning

Jan 11, 2005 7:15 am US/Central
(AP) Randy Moss makes his living with his talent, makes his name with his antics.

Moss was just being himself when he bent over in the end zone after his second touchdown catch in Minnesota's 31-17 playoff win Sunday, pretended to strip off his pants, and pantomimed a moonshot at Green Bay fans.

Some took offense, some thought it was amusing, even appropriate, after the way fans had been riding him during the game.

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy thought it was funny, if not quite right for national television. He thought it was Moss' answer to Green Bay fans, who have a tradition of mooning the visiting team's bus in the parking lot after a game.

Minnesota center Matt Birk, who confronted Moss the previous week about leaving the field with 2 seconds left in a loss at Washington, didn't consider Moss' latest stunt a team "distraction." This time, Birk defended Moss -- sort of.

"Brett Favre used to do the throat slash. I think that's worse than just a fake moon," Birk said. "But, you know, Randy's Randy and Brett's Brett, so Randy gets heat."

Moss surely wasn't the first player to want to moon the fans, but he was the first to do it next to the goal posts in the fourth quarter of a playoff game on national television. He has timing and he's not camera shy.

The NFL doubtlessly will fine him, perhaps the $5,000 that disciplinary guidelines provide for the first offense of making "obscene gestures or other actions construed as being in poor taste."

For a man making $5 million this season, losing .001 off the top must hurt as much as snipping the tips off his Afro. Moss can't buy publicity any cheaper.

"Just having a little fun with the boys a little bit," he said after the game. "I hope I don't get in trouble by it, but if I do I'll take the heat."

Moss certainly can expect to get ragged by Philadelphia fans on Sunday, though he won't have Terrell Owens trying to show him up.

The pseudo-moonshot was a harmless, if crass, prank that by itself is of little consequence. All Moss revealed was his knack for attracting attention, good and bad, just as he has his whole career. Nobody acts the way he does and wears hair so big hoping to go unnoticed.

The problem with Moss' mooning was that it can be one of those little taunts that can turn into something more serious. The rise in player-fan confrontations in American pro sports in recent years reached the point of a near-riot at the NBA Indiana Pacers-Detroit Pistons game two months ago.

What if insulted Green Bay fans had thrown things at Moss as he jiggled his butt in front of them? Would Moss or his teammates have charged the crowd as Ron Artest did in Detroit after a fan tossed a cup at him?

Vikings tight end Jermaine Wiggins thought Moss was just "having a good time" and responding in kind to fans who had been heckling him nastily.

"If people keep saying so many things to you," Wiggins said, "it's going to come to a point in time where you're just going to say, 'You know what? To hell with this, and I'm going to do what I've got to do."'

But that's not what a player's got to do. The player's the pro, the one who should act professionally. There's no manhood at stake. Moss proved his manhood on the field, playing hard start to finish, when he limped off with his two TDs and a sprained ankle. He didn't have to sully the day with the silly stuff.

The NFL has been in a tizzy over anything that smacks of indecency since Janet Jackson's breast-baring "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl last year. The league was embarrassed by the risque "Monday Night Football" intro two months ago when "Desperate Housewives" star Nicollette Sheridan tossed away her shower towel and appeared to be nude as she seduced Owens in the locker room before the Eagles-Cowboys game.

Even those of us who weren't particularly offended by either of those incidents have to be grateful to the NFL for sparing us from staring at Mickey Rooney's bare butt in a Super Bowl ad this year.

Instead we got Moss' wiggling derriere, happily fully clothed.

Moss has had his share of legal problems off the field but his football transgressions over the years -- he once squirted a referee with a water bottle -- are piddling stuff, on the order of the nonsense pulled by Owens and New Orleans' Joe Horn. They all got the attention they craved, though not the reputation these superstar wannabes might have wanted.

They would have served themselves better by fashioning themselves after the best in the game. Jerry Rice managed to set virtually every receiving record without once looking like a jerk.
------------------------------------------------------------
Fining him? You gotta be kidding me. I've seen players do shit TEN times worse on the field and they didn't do a FUCKING THING.

Whatever.

Then there's this:

More People Arrested During Vikings-Packers Game

Jan 11, 2005 7:13 am US/Central
Green Bay, Wis. (AP) The Green Bay Packers had their problems on the field -- and the fans in the stands didn't do too well either in Sunday's game with the Minnesota Vikings.

Authorities say there were more people arrested and ejected from Lambeau field than in any game all season, as the Vikings beat the Packers 31-to-17 in that playoff game.

According to the official count, 16 people were arrested, most of them for unlawful conduct at a public event.

There were 47 people ejected from the game, 32 of them for unruly behavior
------------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to find out where these unruly fans were from. Seriously. Don't get me wrong, there are a SHITLOAD of morons in this state that would go out to Lambeau just to start shit, especially after the outcome of the game on Sunday, but I'm still going with my point of how the Pack fans were acting on Sunday.

Thanks for a great season, Pick of the Week fans...see you next year at Planet Magic in Denmark, WI!

OK, I've kept silent long enough.

1.) Jermaine Wiggins is complaining "You should have heard what they were saying?" Aw, what's the matter, little boy...did the big, bad, non-pro football players sitting yards away from you hurt your feelings? This just in, Viking players...WE HATE YOU HERE. We want you to fail. We want to see you beaten senseless on the field by our team. It's called a "rivalry." (But all we'll do to visiting fans is give 'em a little hell; out-of-town fans are routinely surprised at how well they're treated at Lambeau, and often write letters to the editor of the Green Bay Press-Gazette to tell them so.)

Leave it to the Minnesota Vikings to whine about fan comments. Try SACKING UP and not letting it bother you. You think we won't get on you even worse next year, now that we know we're under your skin? Moron.

2.) The whole point about "what if this could have started Artest 2: Electric Boogaloo?" is bullshit, plain and simple. Nobody at Lambeau throws things at enemy players...the seats are way too valuable, and the Packers' mgmt. would revoke your tickets for that kind of behavior.

3.) Mooning the players' bus? I've lived in Titletown all my life, and I've never, ever heard of such a thing, and I've never seen it in all the Packer games I've covered...and our media vehicles park pretty close to the visiting teams' buses. Tony Dungy, I doubt thee.

4.) Diana Moss (heard that on the Maino and Nick show today; pretty funny) is an asshat, plain and simple. Should he be fined? Absolutely. Moss may not miss the money much, but at least it'd be a symbolic gesture from the NFL saying "you done wrong."

5.) The Lambeau Leap is celebratory, rubbing it in to NO ONE. It's players giving something back to the loyal fans (and taxpayers who helped w/ renovations at Lambeau Field )who pay these guys' salaries, and in many cases, actually own the team. Try doing that with Red McComb...eww. (And Matt Birk has to drag up Favre's throat-slashing stuff, in desperate search of justification for Randy? C'mon, dude, that's so 1999. Gimme a break.)

6.) As for the actual game...live by the redneck, die by the redneck. Brett KILLED us on Sunday...in a way he hasn't consistently done since '93 or '94. Four f'n picks!? No wonder we lost...can't give Culpepper that many chances, especially with our defense. And yes, I was angry at Brett's screwup on that red-zone pass WAY ahead of the line of scrimmage. Just fall forward, Favre, and you've got a first down at the 1...but NOOOOOOOOOO.

And I actually was more mad at all the holding the Vikes' O-line was getting away with than any shove-off by Randy. Apparently, tackling a defensive lineman by grabbing the jersey around the shoulder pads is an OK blocking method in the playoffs. Jesus.

Plus, once Walker was done for the day, that left only Donald Driver as a legit deep threat, and by then, it was too late for the running game...plus, Davenport was hurt as well.

I remember a reporter saying the day after the 4th-and-26 debacle in Philly last year saying "this one's gonna hurt for a long time." This one, I'm wagering, will hurt even longer.

Fuck it...Go Pats.

Star wipe, and...we're out.

Then there's always that "dont let him score, and he isnt pretending to moon the crowd" argument that everybody seems to be missing.

He PRETENDED to pull his pants down? Holy mother of jeebus! A man PRETENDED to pull his pants down! Something has to be done about this! I mean, he had his pants on and everything, but he BENT OVER! OH THE HUMANITY!
Not much different than pregame stretches really. Touch your toes, everybody sees your pants covered ass. But, he moved his hands next to his pants AS IF he was pulling them down, and suddenly, the same ass that was up i the air during warmups is somehow offensive?

I bilieve that's what I mentioned a post or two back. When I was there, in FULL VIKING REGALIA, I really was surprised at how nice people were to me. I didn't run around making stupid comments to rile up the crowd (is:WHOOOOOOVIKESRULE~! BRETT SUXXXXXXXXXXXX~!) The only derogatory comment made to me was: "Y'know, the Vikes ain't that bad, but Hovan can SUCK MY BALLS!"
OK, I can deal with that. The recurring theme I keep hearing about from Sunday is how the crowd was over-the top swearing/taunting/bashing towards not just the team, but visiting fans. That's complete and utter bullshit. Sack it up, my ass. If that really IS what was happening (and with the mooning thing over the years - Tony Dungee, I have no reason to doubt thee) Then Moss PRETENDING to moon the crowd who over the years have ACTUALLY been mooning the team as they leave really is NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL (except to some Pack fans and FOX commentators.)
Also, about the Brett/throat-slashing thing (which I had never heard of until yesterday afternoon), was Favre fined for that guesture? Just curious. If not, then there is no way Moss should be fined for this. Hell, half the crap Sapp used to do ON THE FIELD was worse than this.

Yeah, but it's like the Buffalo fans who throw shit at the other team's bus and the Jet/Dolphin fans who start fights at not-JRS. There may only be a few of them, and certainly not representative of the other 65,000 people, but they stand out because of their behavior.
