Sportline is reporting that Dennis Erickson has been kicked to curb in San Fran.

http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/8070295

While ESPN is reporting that there are now at least 8 Offensive Coordinator positions open.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=1958992

Does anyone else see Jim Fassell in a new zip code next year?

My bet is that Fassell winds up being promoted up to Coordinator in Baltimore.

He realyl doesn't want to be a Coordinator because he sees that as a step down. He might take it if he doesn't get a head coaching offer. But we are already interviewing such dignataries as Ron Turner and Rick Neuheisel for the gig.

On a similar vein, the Browns are reported to have hired Phil Savage from the Ravens as their new General Manager.

Talk is that Russ Grimm from the Steelers could be the next coach. Could this help weaken two division opponents? Hope springs eternal...

I'm just glad that it's not going to be (head coach) Jeff Fisher & (GM) Floyd Reese from the Titans.

Incidentally, I was hoping that ownership would let Newsome go, since we could then promote Savaga AND get some draft picks.

Maybe only one, because Savage may bring in Ravens D-Coordinator Mike Nolan...

Really? I thought he may hold out for a college head coaching vacancy.

So what's the word on Pete Carroll and the 49ers? Anybody on the West Coast have any scoop?

I HAVE to believe there is ZERO chance of that happening (though the Donahue firing does leave the possibility of a coach/GM hire, which is what Carroll would want), because frankly USC will likely be the superior football team next year. They're so far ahead of everyone in the Pac-10 it's not even funny.

(Of course, I'd have never believed Erickson would leave OSU until it happened...)

I can't imagine that Pete Carroll would leave USC. He's done his time with the Patriots and Jets, so it's not like he would think that he'd have to take a shot at the NFL while the iron was hot.

While I was typing this, ESPN Radio says that Carroll is not interested in coaching the Niners.

Savage is in New England this AM to interview Romeo Crennel, then apparantly Crennel is flying to San Fran this Saturday to interview there.

I didn't think they could interview Crennel until after the Patriots were done playing?

The bye week is the exception. I think they can interview one time during the bye week, and if you want to interview again, it has to be after the coach's season is over.

Jim Bates is expected to interview for the Browns head coaching shot... he's a long shot, but he's done a good enough job with the Dolphins defense, as well as in his interim stint, to warrant some consideration. It'd probably be best for him to stay on with the Phins for another year and then see what coaching options are available, when his stock will likely be higher, especially with some of the other more attractive options likely off of the market (Fassel, the NE coordinators, etc.)

Dunno what I think about this decision... the Saints are just so inconsistent, and a lot of it falls on Haslett. But, you also have one of the sorriest organizations in NFL history, and also one of the most inconsistent quarterbacks in Brooks, so it's not just him. Still, they need serious help on the defense, especially in the secondary, if they wanna help Haslett out over the next few years.

Take the Bears' O-Coordinator out; the Sun-Times report that Ron Turner will take over the position for the second time.

I'm in the heart of this, and I still don't really know what to make of it. Haslett will definitely be back next year, and they are talking about signing him to a two-year extension beyond that. I look at this in two different ways. One, he has been basically a .500 coach his whole tenure here and I don't know where else that would be good enough to return. On the other hand, I look at the continuity that Dan Rooney has fostered in Pittsburgh with Cowher and wonder if Benson is right in maintaining his faith in Haslett. Everyone was calling for Cowher's head at the end of last season, saying he had lost his touch, but Rooney stayed with him, and look where they are now.
It's not like this is a team lacking in talent and thats why they lose. This is a team with a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball that finds very creative ways to lose. If it is not a lack of talent, one would have to conclude that its a lack higher up the food chain. I believe the defensive coordinator and GM should go, and see what Haslett can do with that.
