The only things I know about Superman mainly come from the Christopher Reeves' movies, but I am a big fan of Smallville. I also enjoyed the Saturday morning cartoons and the Lois and Clark television show. Do these show do the comic justice?

I used to watch the Super-friends growing up and remember Superman had an enemy that when he said his name backwards he went back to his own universe. Is that Mr. Mxyzptlk? I only ask because there has been a lot of talk of this character coming to Smallville, but I have yet to see him.

I also read somewhere that Smallville is only scheduled to run for 5 or 6 seasons, I believe they are in the middle of season 4 now. Is there word on how they are going to end the series and is more of Superman's famous foes are going to stop by Smallville. I enjoyed the Flash episode and thought more interesting visitors like Bruce Wayne or Green Lantern could add to the already great stories.

I just started watching Smallville a couple of weeks ago (I tried to watch all of season 2 in one day, ouch!) and I'm digging it, although the mutant-of-the-week theme the show has could easily start to wear on me.

I try not to pay too much attention to the recent news items regarding the show because I don't want to spoil anything for myself, but I did hear something about how they have to stop short of having Lois Lane (who is soon to arrive) meeting Lex Luthor. There was something about how that's supposed to happen in the next Superman movie being made by Warner Brothers, so they refuse to let that happen on the TV show.

As for doing the comic justice, there are a decent number of inaccuracies and seemingly rewritten history, but quite frankly, I don't care. I find the show entertaining enough to ignore that, but then again, I'm not a diehard Superman fan.

Mr. M. (I can't spell his damn name) appeared in the Season 4 episode "Jinx". Look for it in re-runs. Also, Smallville is DEFINATELY on for another season, and maybe Season 6 if ratings indicate an interest in it.

I like Smallville, but I don't love it, so I really don't commit to it and just watch it occasionally. I really like Lois and Clark, but that might have had a lot to do with Terri Hatcher.

As far as the comic is concerned, Supes has always been a favorite, but in spurts. For example, I read the whole "Superman dies" arc and the resulting return to live arc in all four mags back a few years ago. I read the arc where Supes became relatively weak some time ago. But nothing lately. Like most comic, the character changes from time to time. Back when I was a kid, NO WAY Lois had a clue that Supes was Clark, Perry was kind of more like J Jonah Jamison and Jimmy was a punk kid. Obviously, those things have changed a bit. Morgan Edge used to be a harmless boss at Clark's TV gig, not he's some sort of bad guy, I believe. I don't see a lot of needed continuity between the Comics and Smallville. Continuity between Smallville and a Movie would be helpful, especially if characters spill over (are actors from Smallville going to be in the movie? I guess I need to look into that).

My take

Making Morgan Edge a bad guy isn't some new development -- he was already a bad guy back in Jack Kirby's classic run on Jimmy Olsen, for instance.

Anyway, Smallville is pretty much completely out of continuity with the Superman comics -- particularly because when John Byrne revamped Superman in the '80s, he threw out a lot of the Superboy continuity, declaring that Clark's powers didn't manifest until he was an adult, that Clark never met Lex or Lois until he moved to Metropolis, et cetera. The Smallville versions of Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Flash were nothing like the comics versions, either. The Smallville creators are picking out characters and bits of stories here and there and then adapting them for their own purposes, which is a lot more sensible than breaking their backs trying to stay in-continuity with the comics.

That said, the show is at least keeping true to the basic concept of Superman -- the powers, the rural upbringing, truth justice and the American way, and all that.

I tried watching a few times, but the only episode I enjoyed was the Christopher Reeves one. It will last five seasons, because besides Charm, a show can only go five seasons on the WB ie Buffy and Angel. The problem I have with Smallville is the Luthor/Kent relationship. How can they go from being buddy, buddy to wanting to kill each other, but Lex doesn't know Clark's secret. Its mind numbing as a fan of the original movies and most of the comic books. I'm actually picking up Jim Lee's Superman, it makes no sense, but Jim makes Sups look like a million dollars and Lois is damn hot in it.
