That's correct, but I think in the next year or two at most, studios will stop producing VHS. They already, for the most part, have stopped production of catalog titles -- you can no longer buy a new copy of most films that are older than a year or two. When studios finally give up on releasing new movies on VHS, that'll be it.
(Of course, there's still be a ton of stuff on VHS that isn't on DVD -- why, The African Queen isn't even on DVD yet!)

Yeah, that's going to be harsh -- especially since Amazon owns the Internet Movie Database, so every time someone looks up a movie on it, there'll be a "RENT THIS MOVIE NOW!" button right there. Ouch.

Personally, that wouldn't be a problem since, for me, Amazon is (cue Kaientai) Eeeeeeeeevvviiiillllll, but I could see the relationship between IMDB and Amazon hurting Amazon's competitors.

I rent many movies from the local purveyor of more obscure films here in Columbia and I rent quite a few movies from one of the 3 grocery stores which rents at 99 cents for 5 days.
There are quite a few movies I enjoy seeing every once in a while, but have no great desire to own.
I'd also want to preview a movie before buying it, and I rarely go to the theatre.

First, I am a cheap bastard. I don't pay for much of anything I can get free. Arm & Hammer baking soda recently had a promotion where sending in 2 box labels would get you a free rental at Blockbuster. With the skillful use of triple coupons and waiting for the sale of baking supplies before Thanksgiving, we got 4 free rentals (mailed to different family members' addresses) and 8 boxes of baking soda, most of which we donated to the local soup kitchen.
We used 2 of the free rentals to see Spiderman 2 and the Manchurian Candidate. I think it had been 3 or four months since we last rented - also using free rentals from somewhere). On the first rental, the register gave us a "random" coupon for another free rental, and the second we got a random coupon for a free $10 gift card. We are way ahead.
The last time I paid for rentals was for the kids movies "summer of fun" where we could watch 10 family movies (1 per week for ten weeks) for a $1 donation to a children's charity.
I have never paid a late fee - it isn't that hard to pay attention to when something is due.
Most of the time, the movies we watch come free from our local lending library.
As far as going to the theatre, I go probably ten times a year, and I usually have been able to score free passes from some mail-in promotion or other. If the admission was free, then I don't feel as bad spending $6 for a bucket of popcorn - especially when I get 3 or 4 free refills.

206? Huh...that's a Seattle area code. Well I called it and got Hugh McIntyre's voice mail box, but alas it was full and wouldn't let me leave a message...
