Hey W's

I hope you all had a relaxing holiday (and for all you students out there, I hope you're enjoying the break). Long story short, I have to replace my PS2 and because it is less expensive now than when I bought it, I'll have $30-50 dollars extra credit that will most likely go towards buying a game (which is something I rarely ever do). So my question is..what should I get?

MGS 3: Snake Eater: This game has looks really interesting to me. The graphics are cool and it seems like a really great game for me to lose myself in until next semester begins.

EA NHL '05: NHL games are pretty underrated. And unlike a football or baseball game, the style of play doesn't get repetitive and easy, you know? And fighting is always fun. Sometimes that why I play it.

NBA Live '05: The funny thing is that 10 years ago, I bought NBA Live 1995 for my SNES. What a way to come full circle, huh? Besides, NBA games get me into intense match-ups with my friends and I still find myself playing them years later.

Those are the three games I am looking really hard at. GTA and S!vsR have totally lossed my interest. I kind of got my fill on blowing stuff up in Vice City and until they allow my CAW to go into CyberSpace and DDX every challenger and collect every belt, I have nothing left for WWE games. If any of you guys have any opinions or advice on these or any other games I should check out instead, it would be very much appreciated. It would be even more appreciated if you had any inside knowledge on anything cool I should WAIT for. Because, like many of you, I really hate feeling Buyer's Remorse. Thanks for your help, dudes and dudettes.

Mmmmm...now that is a tasty burger!

If you're choosing between NHL '05 and NBA Live '05, I'd go with NHL, all things being equal. I think that both the gameplay and franchise modes are superior in NHL.

I haven't played NBA Live 2005, but I have 2004, and it's a great game. I enjoy it even now, a year out of date, so I would say NBA Live, plus, it's only like 30 bucks.

You could score both the NHL and NBA 2k5 titles for about $40 total - they are $19.99 each. I'm not sure if you've ever played the series though.

I'm personally avoiding buying EA right now due to the NFL exclusive rights deal, which I feel is bad for gamers.

ESPN NHL 2K5 and ESPN NBA 2K5 are right there for $20 apiece. NBA Live may be better than NBA 2K5 (dunno, haven't played either as I'm not into basketball at all), but NHL 2K5 is superb.

^^^^ -- eh, beaten. Ditto on the newfound-hatred-of-EA thing, though, which is keeping me from buying Burnout 3.

I hope you don't mind a 40 minute cut scene to open the game. I got this for Christmas, "played" through the opening and haven't touched it since. Maybe I'll have another go at it now that I'm off from work for 5 days.

Just in case you're still wondering about what to get, I have to third the motion for one of the ESPN games. They're just as good or better than their analogous EA Sports games, and less than half the price. I'm currently playing ESPN NCAA Hoops 2K5, and I think that it's very good.

Forget your hatred of EA just long enough to buy Burnout3: Takedown. The Burnout series is one of my favorite racing games ever! The sense of speed is unreal and the crashes are so crazy it's almost rewarding to screw up and watch your car do a triple sow-cow into a gasoline tanker (and it can be if you smash your twisted remains into one of the other racers!). Nothing so far comes close to trying to beat the clock going wide open, full boost, flying into on-coming traffic in that formula 1 racer. Gives ya chills!

If not that, I've heard good things about...Taiko Drummer?

If you ever find yourself in a dark alley staring down a rabid JR, remember these three simple statements:

1. Stone Cold is never coming back! NEVER!
2. Oklahoma is gonna choke!
3. And that cowboy hat of yours? It's got a fungus! Yeah! You heard me right!

If that doesn't scare him off... take 10 years of Jerry Lawler and call me in the morning.

Depends on what you like... If you're an RPG fan I would recommend Shadow Hearts: Covenant though will admit it is something of a matter of taste, and possibly the new Final Fantasy when it comes out.

I personally like the Guilty Gear fighting games, and a new on came out, haven't played it yet so I can't really give an adequate take on it. Though I believe in the new one you can select a color palette for the character which is a nifty, if throwaway, feature.

Heck, if your comp can support it, and you like RTS games, I recommend Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. It is fun, and muliplayers games in it that I've had were a hoot. But then I know why...

"Orkies smash de 'uumiez!"

But again it depends on what you like.

You might enjoy Katamari Damacy. It has a unique concept, so if you're in the mood to play something you've never played anything like before (for $20, even), you should look into it. But the multiplayer isn't so hot, so if you want a game you can also play with/against your friends, I'd give either the hockey or basketball games a go.

Buyer's remorse is a BASTARD. But what softens the blow is if you pay less than 25 dollars for a game. And Metal Gear Solid 3 will cost around $20 in a year or two, if you can wait. Just think of all the things that $30 could buy you in the meantime! 30 or so doughnuts! Delicious!

Indeed it is...but not in the case of Metal Gear games (at least for me). The last MSG game I bought was Twin Snakes for Gamecube ($40). I beat it in a couple of days or so, but I was still happy with what I got out of it. Have yet to play MSG3, but if you enjoyed the other games in the series I'd probably go for that.

As for the hockey titles...ESPN 2k5 > NHL 05 in almost every aspect except for shooting. Don't know why there, but I prefer the slapshot in EA better.

I strongly suggest MGS 3. It's got long cut scenes, but the game rocks and the gameplay is superb.

There is no one out there who would not enjoy Katamari Damacy, apart from residents of state mental institutions, and even there opinion is split 70-30 in favor.

I just rented LOTR: Thrid Age and if you like Roleplaying Games, this one rocks. It is a bit easy till you get to the Balrog, thankfully they give you Gandalf to play which is cool. It covers all three movies and the graphics are cool. The wife just bought me X-Men Legends for my birthday, but I haven't gotten a chance to play it though. I would suggest if you are getting EA games, I know they are coming off some hate with the NFL deal, but they are the best games out there.

Copy and pasting (and reformating oh god the reformating) is boring. Rambling on is fun. Maybe not for you, but not for me. This is an evolving process, hopefully it'll level up to something good down the road.
