Antonio Inoki announced today that Brock Lesnar will be attending the New Japan Tokyo Dome Show on 1/4 as his guest.

This is incredibly interesting as there are a few huge possibilities for Brock in Japan.

1) MMA/K-1
Lesnar has previously stated that he would be interested in MMA. With the K-1/New Japan relationship and Inoki's influence of pushing shoot style matches over the "classic pro wrestling" on his cards, Brock could possibly be a huge star in the world of MMA with the right training.

2) New Japan Pro Wrestling
Zach Arnold at www.puroresupower.com has been reporting that Inoki may be positioning himself for a return to New Japan as top star with his new gimmick as the aging hero of the fight game. If this is true, perhaps Inoki views Brock as the new American monster he can have wars with in New Japan. Inoki respects shooters and Brock' credentials as NCAA Heavyweight Champion speaks for itself (former WWE titleholder also has cache, but for the fans more so).

With the way Japanese pro wrestling tours are structured with approximately 3-4 weeks on/3 weeks off, this would cater toward Brock's desire to have a lighter schedule, which I believe was his main complaint.

The training schedule for MMA is brutal and unrelenting. Although you don't travel much as you would on a full time tour with only a few matches per year, your training and sparring would be non-stop.

Of course we'll have to see if Brock does indeed appear at the show. Inoki has the habit of confusing stuff like "I thought about inviting him 3 months ago" with "He'll be in front row for sure."

Can't sat I'm jazzed at the idea of Inoki vs. Brock (or anyone else) but I would like to see Lesnar come in as the new badass foreign heel and kill off Scott Norton once and for all. Imagine if Lesnar had come along 10 or 20 years ago to wrestle in either New Japan or All Japan. The sky would've been the limit.

I don't follow NJPW close enough to know for sure - but couldn't they have done pretty much anything they'd do with Brock already with Josh Barnett, and pretty much blew him off? Did I get a mistaken impression of his level in NJPW?

I wonder if this is just as much positioning from Brock as it from Inoki; WWE's playing hardball with Brock because they don't think he's got any options, so he's trying to convince them that he really does.

Barnett had the shoot credentials that Inoki loves and he's had some good showings against name NJ guys, but you're right that overall he's had little impact.

The big difference to me, and maybe it's too simplistic, is that Lesnar looks the part of a killer so much better than Barnett ever would. Despite the ideal cut up physique being less important in Japan, I think having Lesnar in the role would be a better sell to the fans and the media. Ring work is another matter entirely since Lesnar is already a really good worker and Barnett still has to develop into the worked style. Barnett would be a better fit back in the old UWFi and RINGS feds. Only U-Style is really doing that nowadays and they're one of a million indy groups in Japan.

the worst part of this latest round of axing is that the b shows have been using jobbers, when perfectly healthy (and better) wreslters are being let go because there is no place/program for them acoording to WWE.
