The original Tecmo Bowl for NES had the NFLPA license, and the city names, but not the actual team names or helmets.

Nope. He's in Madden this year. Picture and everything. And in previous years, all you needed to do was change his name from "whatever number OLB" to "LaVar Arrington" and the announcers called him "Arrington".

The really sad thing about this is that it destroys any future novelty games like NFL Blitz and Backyard Football that featured NFL players, but with arcade-style or non-serious gameplay. Monopolies are no fun. Just ask wrestling fans. I really fear that EA will now completely phone it in for the next five years with no more competition.

Well, the contract has some clauses that allow games like Backyard Football that don't sell very well. You can make an NFL game if the distribution isn't above a certain number and as long as it's not going to sell well (niche games, I suppose).

As for NFL Blitz, they're revamping it totally. They've hired writers from "Playmakers" on ESPN, and are making the game "the NFL doesn't want you to see" or something like that. So no license, but you can do drugs, beat women, and get charged with gun posession (I'm only half joking).

And the only thing I can add to this thread...

I'd really like to see a new Mutant League Football game.

Base Wars would be nice too.

Something to keep in mind is that EA needs to make money in order make this pay off (ie; profit). And to profit the most, bring the goods.

JayJayDean: "Electronic Arts also has exclusive deals with NASCAR, FIFA and the PGA Tour.

If you can get where Madden's going to end up based on where NASCAR 2005, FIFA 2005, and Tiger Woods 2005 have gone, then it's ALLLLLLLL GOOD, because those titles all ROCK and have shown absolutely ZERO signs of any stagnation."

You got that right.

On the subject of Sega bothering to release a game next year, even though EA owns th FIFA rights, Konami have built a pretty strong competitor to it in the European market in the form of the Pro Evolution Soccer series.

FIFA's still the market leader, but it was a pretty close run thing when they brought out the last round of updates (although by now Konami got rights to a couple of the big leagues).

The players names are all just out by a letter or two for the most part (Ryan Gills is a demon on the wings for Man U) and the team names are squiffy, but obvious and easy to change. Similarly, the stadia at which the teams play have silly names but have an eery familiarity about them.

Pro Ev also entered the market after FIFA so didn't have the advantage of an established fan base which Sega has.

Of course as far as I know Pro Ev has sold squat in the US, which is obviously where the big Madden market is, so it may not be so easy for Sega to have success.

But enough of that...

Winning Eleven (Pro Evolution's US name) really hasn't sold well at all, no, but I agree that it's definitely a well-made game, though I'm not sure FIFA beat the series to market by all that much (as the original WE game was International Superstar Soccer for the SNES...)

Wrong there. The new NFL deal is going to allow EA to a ton of new benefits not available earlier.

And of course, the IGN Article gives hints of this as well...

"The agreement also provides the opportunity for new games and for EA to access both NFL Films and the NFL Network for use in the games."
"The five-year agreements will usher NFL fans through the console technology transition with new ideas and innovative game play experiences."

Your first quote gives hope. Your second quote is no different from saying, "This deal will make Madden the bestest game out there bar none. You will never ever buy another game because of our unique innovations!"

I seem to get a kick out of boycotting things these days. Whether it be Roy Williams, Marvel, or Madden it gives me pleasure to say, "You pissed me off. Go to hell." So no more Madden for me for the immeadiate future.

Overall, this is a bad news for consumers. I have no doubt that EA will continue to produce a quality game. But regardless, this means less choices for the buyer, and that can't be a plus (if ESPN didn't do anything else, they gave us the $20 top quality video game and forced EA into a price war, the type of thing I guarantee you won't see now)

I was thinking the same sorta thing here, because even if Sega's contract doesn't let them, *someone* out there will put out patch files or something to update rosters. The problem I just realized is that a 5 year deal means NO ESPN football (and now maybe basketball and baseball?) for the entire new console generation.

We'll have to wait until Xbox3 and PS4 (?) are halfway dead before we see another brand other than Madden!

I hope this falls through and that EA stays away from MLB. "MVP Baseball" is a terrible baseball simulator. Craig Biggio finished with 54 HR's in the season I played. Which version had the big commercial for the singer Vitamin C? I worship at the Acclaim "All-Star Baseball" throne (the one with Derek Jeter on the cover).

There are worse things than Madden being the exclusive NFL game. Madden is the most popular franchise around and it'd also increase the number of players available for online gaming. Everyone would be on the same playing field in that regard. But they need to vary/update the soundbytes. I hear "paws! He got those big ol' paws up there" in my sleep. Maybe they'll finally work on the player movements, too. It's hilarious in Madden and NCAA when the players all put their hands in for the pre-game "let's get fired up" huddle. The hands are supposed to touch, but they're always a good 5-6 inches apart.

Jimmy Rollins was the Phillies' first ever 50/50 man in my MVP season. And he had less than 10 home runs the year before and the year after. They need to seriously tweak those games, and I really don't like any of the other baseball games out there, either.

I figured it would begin, and I've seen at least 3 online petitions asking the NFL to reconsider. I'd link them, but why waste your time? So far, it's been a bad PR move (I've yet to see a large number of people praise the idea) but I'm not sure that EA is the bad guy here. It looks as if the NFL was pushing for this deal, too. I'm sure they make more money with the exclusivity license than by simply licensing to anybody who has a game company.

The only thing I can think of about using NFL Flims is if EA wants to add more historical games for that situation mode and REALLY breakout the old-timer games and retro unis.

Maybe even a few NY Titans games...

I think people are mad at the wrong group here. You cant blame EA for making a great business move, if you want to be mad at anyone be mad at the NFL for selling the rights. As far as MLB, keep in mind that Microsoft bought the High Heat license indicating they are making a baseball game, I have a feeling that if there is a bidding war for MLB like there was for the NFL, EA would not be winning as long as Microsoft is in the mix. I wouldnt be shocked if Sega really fights for those NBA rights too as that is their best game.

I know it sucks that the NFL did this, but Sega can still make football games, and if they make it good enough, they can still survive. I think people need to come to the realization that Sega was never going to outsell Madden or come anywhere close because as someone said earlier, Madden is now a part of pop culture, a lot of people are probably unaware that other football games even exist.

Actually, I seem to remember there being an article on IGN somewhere about how the X-Box version on NFL 2K5 outsold Madden (although the PS2 version of Madden outsold 2K5 there...)
