Do Flair and Foley in all likelihood have no use for each other as human beings? Yes. However, that doesn't mean they can't find a way to turn the personal issues into a way to make money off of each other. That is the one thing these two have in common: The love of finding ways to make money. If that wasn't the case, Flair wouldn't be around in his mid 50's and Foley wouldn't show up everytime he had something to hawk so he could make a few extra dimes. At this point, due to the extra PPV's caused by exclusive PPV's, there really are no classic 'money' matches except Flair vs. Foley for Mania, unless they go completely inter-show. Trip vs. Orton won't erase memories of Hogan vs. Andre, and Bradshaw vs. anyone won't make people forget SD Jones vs. King Kong Bundy. Sadly, a match between a legend who was past his prime 8 years earlier vs. a guy who is retired and past his prime would be the marquee match for Mania.

I think there's a deep hatchet to be buried before these guys get into a ring together. That would be a disaster waiting to happen. And while Foley has put over numerous young guys, I doubt he'd put Flair over in a million years. And I'd say the same goes for Flair.

Im not really a proud guy, but if Ric Flair went to shake my hand and I was Foley- I wouldnt do it. (Assuming this isnt an angle). I mean, Flair practically called Foley's whole career a joke...

"Mick Foley will never be remembered as anything more than a glorified stuntman" -Im paraphrasing, but I think thats almost exactly what Flair said in his book.

To be fair to Flair, Mick was not kind in his book to him either. Flair, did say the stuntmen was a recipet for Mick's bashing of him as a booker. Mick did say that Flair was a great wrestler, but did bring up the point that Flair's matches were basically the same match for most of his career which is a point hard to argue against. I love both men, so I'm not taking sides and I'm just hoping it leads to a shaking of hands and a ****match at Wrestlemania.

"I was flipping through Foley's book again and his criticism of Flair was pretty fucked up."

I'm not sur ehow Foley's criticism of Flair was "fucked-up". He divided his time between kissing the guy's ass as a performer and pointing out what a stupid booker he was. And seeing as how Foley, y'know, WORKED under the guy, and how Flair questioned whetehr or not he was injured when he clearly was, I'd say his words are validated. They're certainly not the kind fo cheap shots that Flair's taken about Foley.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

It's called "working the smarts". Remember the Owen Hart enzigiri of doom on Shawn Michaels in 95 or 96?

      (edited by TL_Hopper on 14.12.04 0719)

Except, that happened on television where actual people could see it.

But, IIRC, Vince went through the trouble of checking Shawn into the hospital overnight to fool everyone into thinking it was legit. Not that I think this instance is a work, but they have done it in the past.

Flair booked '89 in the NWA, so he wasn't an entirely a horrible booker. Also, if it wasn't for Flair the horrible booker giving Foley a chance in the Fall of '89 after the Continental region went under, Cactus Jack becomes some guy who worked the indys for a few years before getting a job outside of wrestling.
And, how come Foley was allowed to take numerous shots at people throughout his book without expecting reprecussions, yet Flair spends less than a paragraph on him and he becomes the anti-christ?

I don't think Flair is being treated as the antichirst at all. I think Foley has a validated point about Flair as NWA booker, 89 might have been a good year, but I think even Flair would admitt to making mistakes with the booking at the time, I mean he pushed for Austin to be let go for christ's sakes when Bischoff took over. Flair's comments are a bit out of hand compared to Mick's comments about other wrestlers since Mick can pack it up with facts. Even the comments he does make at Al Snow and others are mainly laugh getters.

Flair was outline for calling Mick a glorified stuntman which I think we can all agree, he is not. Foley maybe a bump machine, but he is not like Sandman or some of the ECW rejects. Mick can sell, has a good amount of ring psychology and can get the people in the palm of his hand. Is he a techinically sound wrestler, no and he even admitts to it, but not every show needs another Benoit or Kurt. Raw needs someone like Mick who is a great performer in both the serious and funny fashion. Mick's promo last night with that WWF 90s reject was probably the best promo done this year and the ones following that in best of the year category are his promos on Orton.

I love Flair, but the Flair I know and love, the Flair who is a kiss stealing, wheeling, dealing son of a gun would never be toady to anyone even it was the boss' son in law. Raw doesn't need another kiss asser to HHH, it needs someone like Mick who can go from funny to sincere to downright in rage in five minutes and you buy it. So, if you want to talk about comments that are out of line, Flair's is hands down the dumbest comment I have ever read. Now, with that said, I recommend people to buy the Flair book, because it is incrediable. Flair as a storyteller is awesome and you can get a great respect for Flair.

Let's not forget how insignificant McMahon & Co. thinks us "smarks" are. Why would he ever go through all the trouble of working us only?

I could be wrong here, but in June/July of '97 there were rumblings about a backstage altercation between Bret and Shawn that were later found to be a way of working the smarks. I know that the two had disagreements, but I seem to recall the story of fisticuffs being a hoax fabricated by WWF "insiders".

I think it was during the Austin/Michaels/Mankind/"Pick Me" fiasco, and was cited as one of the reasons Michaels was gone for a few months.

Is that right?

I recall that incident, but I don't remember that ever being revealed as a work. I've heard both speak of it as if it were legit...then again, everything is a work in wrestling, right?

As for how significant WWE considers the smarts to be, if nothing else they should know that word travels very quickly about these things now, whether they like it or not. You'd have to be deaf, blind, and stupid not to recognize that after the Brock/Goldberg match at WM last year. This incident will be common knowledge by the next time Raw goes live and, whether they respect the smart fans or not (and I don't care to argue that point at all), they have to realize this.

Reading a recap on LOP about the ECW, and a comment was made that the bookers used what was happening inside AND out of the ring, and integrated it into the feuds and matches so that the ''smarts'' and the ''dumbs'' let it ride as part of the overall work(paraphrased)

So IMO the WWE can do two things..ignore it or use it to make money..and if I know VKM he will see how he can make money out of it. I hate to say I told you so (and I could still be wrong) but I brought up a Flair/Foley match at WM21 a while ago, and I would still love for it to happen.

I could be wrong, correct me if I am. But just now I'm remembering Foley going on Meltzer show kinda talking down on Orton before they actually had a TV feud... Did he really think little of him or was he just working us.

smark/net attack wienerville advisory holds at ORANGE alert - High (JBL is STILL WWE champion and now smarks arch enemy HHH is the World Champion. Major red threat, but the undercard seems okay. The alert holds... for now)- 9/19

Really? I'd be interested in hearing about that. I've never heard anyone connected to the business say anything remotely derogatory about Orton.

I caught this on pwinsider: WWE management was very upset when the Heart Throbs went off into controversial areas last week on the show and as a result they were released. What exactly happened? Did anybody catch that show?
