Sad stuff.

Not a huge Pantera fan, but the story is insane.

FUCK!

The greatest rock guitarist of the 90's from my favorite band growing up, dead. They were down to earth guys, I never met him, but everytime they played in Akron they would stop by this headshop I used to frequent, and then go to Akron's old metal club Ron Crossroads to check out thier tribute band "Cowboys from Hell". It rare to get a big named band to play here instede of cleveland, much less meet with the locals.

And I was just thinking on the way home, how I should dust off the Pantera CD's. I'll never forget my first rock concert Jan 17th 1998 PANTERA. Or the frenzy at Blossum in 2000, when Pantera came out amongst a slew of Nu Metal bands. Damn, this fucking sucks. RIP Dime!

I'm in disbelief.

Pantera was one of the two bands that was always in the CD rotation at my friends house in college. The other was Metallica.

I just can't believe someone would do this.

Yeah, I have a huge test today but this has thrown me off my game. Seems though Vinnie (His brother) made it out alive, thank god. Can't imagine what he's going through having to witness his brother murdered. Damn!

http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/blabbermouth.net/news.aspx?mode=Article&newsitemID=30147

"Scoop of the Columbus, Ohio radio station The Blitz 99.7 FM has confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET that DAMAGEPLAN drummer Vinnie Paul was uninjured in the shooting incident at a Columbus nightclub which resulted in the death of Paul's brother, Dimebag Darrell. According to Scoop, who attended the concert and briefly saw Vinnie following the incident, Paul was in a complete state of shock and expressed his desire to be with his brother right after the shooting occurred."

Weird it happened in Columbus, I've been to two shows down at Polaris Amphitheater and security has always been super tight, Columbus police were particular militant at Ozzfest 99, probably due to Columbine occurring two months before and the fact Ozzfest 97 ended in a riot. Whatever the case, I never liked going to a show down there.

Also John Lennon died 24 years to the day. Don't know if that was some kind of delusional motive, guess we will never know.

Never was a big fan, although they did kick my ass when I saw them with Skid Row back in the day. How horrific this is. Sad indeed. RIP Dime, hope it was instant and no suffering.

Wow ... this is just horrible. Dimebag was a fucking phenomenal guitar player. It's a real shame that he was taken like this.

R.I.P. Dimebag.

I'm just numb this morning. Pantera was pure energy onstage, and Dime was a brilliant guitarist.

God damn this sucks.

I remember that I bought Pantera because of RVD using "Walk" in ECW and I've probably listened "Vulgar Display of Power" hundreds of times since then.

What a very disturbing and tragic occurence. And I guess we'll never really know what this twisted person's motive was for murdering these innocent people.

I've been patted down or searched at EVERY concert I've seen for at least seven years. How the hell did someone get a GUN into a metal show?!! I've seen people turned away because of wallet chains. RIP Dime, best metal guitarist who has ever lived.

Not that I've been there in years, but the Alrosa Villa is a glorified (and that's being generous) heavy metal biker bar. Small place and what I remember as being a pretty rough looking crowd.

I don't know what security would look like these days, but it wasn't the sort of place you'd expect to see metal detectors at the door.

I'm totally bummed. My Pantera Best Of... has been playing most of the day. My first introduction to metal took place on a school trip to NYC in 7th grade, when my buddy Mark brought his Pantera, Megadeth and Metallica tapes. They became permanent parts of my music collection.

I guess this crazy man screamed something about the break up of Pantera before he started shooting (or at least that's what ABC radio was saying earlier today).

It just depends on the venue.
The only show I was patted down at was Ozzfest. Not one of the bar/pub shows that I've been at did any checking. Because of that, I go armed with my lucky butterfly knife, just in case.

Fair enough, but with all this terrorism colour alert stuff you would think they'd at least pat people down. I plead ignorance on dime, I really don't know much about him but if he was a legendary, brilliant artists as he is being uanimously described, crazed and possibly violent fans need to be a consideration.

Sorry dude. Been kinda busy.

To answer some questions/give some insight:
1. They don't pat people down or have metal detectors. They probably will now, obviously, but it wouldn't have helped in this case. It looks like the guy jumped a fence and came in through a side door.

2. Vinnie Paul was uninjured; I listened to Scoop this afternoon as well as talked to him and he said that Vinnie ended up locked in a room with Scoop, a couple of his boys and a few other random people. However, Vinnie did see pretty much the whole thing from up close. Apparently Vinnie jumped off the stage, dived behind the bar, grabbed the bar mic and started screaming "Call 911" before they dragged him into a back room.

3. The cop who ended this is a badass. He went rolling in with no backup and took the shooter down with one shot _ from a shotgun, not the most accurate of weapons. The shooter did have a hostage _ not Vinnie Paul, as was reported in some places _ but the hostage ducked out of the way long enough for the cop to get his shot off.

4. There's some confusion over what exactly the shooter yelled; it seems to be that he was screaming something about the breakup of Pantera. The guy was a semi-pro football player and he would always listen to Pantera before games to get pumped up. Some of his friends talked about how big of a Pantera fan he was, so it seems plausible.

Thanks - after I posted that I realized your paper probably has rules about you breaking information on a message board before it gets put to the press anyway, but I figured a local Columbus journalist was the best source we had for info.

Thanks for that update - post anything else that you find out, please.

Semi-related news: I'm friends with someone who just moved to the Dispatch, and got a byline on this story. I do wish they'd make the story freely available online, even for just a couple of weeks (nytimes.com model, f'rinstance).

Although if what Crimedog sez about the cop is true, he IS a badass. How close was he to the shooter?

About 20 feet or so, I believe. The hostage that the shooter had ducked down just long enough for the cop to get a shot off.

There's not a whole lot new to tell. Apparently this guy's friends _ or former friends _ have kind of been avoiding him lately because he's been acting strange. The breaking point for one of them was when the shooter showed up at his house with a few pages of handwritten Pantera lyrics and claimed they were his and that Pantera had "stolen his identity."

Now they're saying this guy's been claiming to have written all of Pantera's songs and he was pissed at not getting his due.

Looks like another nutjob...

Gene Simmons donated a KISS Kasket for Darrel to be buried in. Dimebag was apparently a huge fan of the band, and had tats of KISS on his chest.
