Anybody else happen to see Heat tonight? For some reason, Jim Ross was doing commentary with Coach. For the most part, Coach played it straight, and JR called the action. They did very little shilling during the matches and, except for inexplicably talking about Chris Benoit during a Gene Snitsky match, just talked about the match going on in the ring, and it was so refreshing. It was honestly the best I've heard JR in quite some time. Has he been doing Heat for awhile or was this just a one shot deal?

I believe they've been doing Coach & Todd Grisham. I'm you can figure out how well THAT team did. They're either in the process of trying to find somebody else for the role or Grisham just had the night off for some reason.

Never 'Wiener of the Day', and is actually quite bitter about it.

I watched WWE Experience this morning and Josh Matthews was co-hosting with Ivory, instead of Todd Grisham.

FWIW, they did mention that JR was filling in for Todd. If he were out of the company they wouldn't mention him.

It was nice hearing JR be more low-key. Particularly when he was talking about how in the old days, a man the size of Viscera wouldn't be doing suplexes.

Oh, I thought the job by both Ross and Coach was awesome. JR even made a couple of quips, the kind of thing he'd do in the past. They both sounded relaxed, and I had fun listening for a change (I had reached the point where I expect awful commentary from the Raw and Heat teams). Plus, the matches were all peppy & entertaining, which helps. It was indeed refreshing, and I'd love to hear more of this style of commentary. Won't happen, but it was lots of fun to hear.

Could have also been used as practice for JR & Coach, who commentated the majority of RAW later that night. I know they've commentated together before (and live, nonetheless) but WWE doesn't seem to have faith in any announcer outside the A-teams.

Or am I right to remember that Heat & Velocity's commentary track is recorded in-studio after RAW & SmackDown air? If that's the case, it definately attributes to JR sounding more polished.

That's correct. Everything but the bits at the announce desk are done later, and even those bits may not have been done in front of the crowd.

When I went to RAW in Buffalo a few weeks ago, there were no announcers for HEAT at the desk at any time during the show- only after RAW ended and the crowd filed out did Coach and Grisham come out to tape their part.

Yeah I guess that they can do it that way for Raw/Heat because they don't have the ringside seats like they do on the Smackdown set. Then again, there's no reason that they ever even have to show the announcers.

I'd prefer he was off permanently, from all speaking-related duties.
