I finally broke down and bought a Gamecube during the post-Thanksgiving sales madness. Now I'm going to go about the process of building a library for it, but given that I know almost nothing about the current GC lineup, I was hoping I could enlist my fellow Ws to come up with some decent titles.

First, let me lay out a few ground rules: The game needn't be GC exclusive, but if it's out for Playstation 2, I probably already have it. I'm not really interested in the newest games. I still have several Playstation games that I haven't gone through yet, so I'm mostly looking for the Cube to be a fun diversion until I can finish those and move on to playing through Gamecube games. As such, I probably don't want to spend more than $30, because by the time I get around to actually playing through something like Paper Mario or Metroid Prime 2, it'll probably be $20, so why not wait to pick it up?

Here's what I've come up with so far:

Super Mario Sunshine
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Legend of Zelda Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Animal Crossing
Super Monkey Ball 2
Mario Kart Double Dash

Any other suggestions?

Seems to be a solid list. If you play a lot of multiplayer, then you might want to add whatever Mario Party they're up to (four? five?).

"He is the most overrated piece of crap in the league. He bitched and whined after he got his ass beaten in New England last year, so the NFL changed the rules. Then he got his ass beaten in New England again. Every year he's the top MVP candidate. Every year he's supposed to be the best. Every year he's going to carry the Colts to the Super Bowl. And every single year he goes to New England and gets his ass beaten. And his brother's a whiny little bitch." -A friend of mine, on Peyton Manning

Mario Party 5 came out and should be priced down by now, especially with MP 6 coming out on December 6 or thereabouts.

As per the list, if you like the golf then try Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour. You could also go with Viewtiful Joe 1.

WADSWORTH: The games up, Scarlet. There are no more bullets left in that gun.
SCARLET: Oh, come on, you don't think I'm gonna fall for that old trick?
WADSWORTH: It's not a trick. There was one shot at Mr. Boddy in the study. Two for the chandelier, two at the lounge door, and one for the singing telegram.
SCARLET:That's not six.
WADSWORTH: One plus two plus two plus one.
SCARLET:Nuh, uh. There was only one shot that got the chandelier. That's one plus two plus ONE plus one.
WADSWORTH: Even if you are right, that would be one plus one plus two plus one, not one plus TWO plus one plus one.

I know you don't want i it right now, but when you get a chance you should definitely pick up Paper Mario, it's a riot!

As for games that are on the cheap currently, I recommend Eternal Darkness. It's very clever, has a cool Lovecraft feel, and your character can go insane. It's lots of fun and probably under $20.

I'll second the nomination for Eternal Darkness. Be warned, though - you may have to get it on eBay for that cheap. A lot of the EBs I've gone into lately still have it for over $30. But a great game, nonetheless.

As for other games - you want Resident Evil (the remake) and Resident Evil 0. You can do without the other Resident Evil games, as they're mere ports (and not remakes) of the Playstation 1 games. If you were into the Pokemon Stadium games for the N64, then Pokemon Colosseum is kinda fun. And to go along with the PS2's War of the Monsters, there's Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee - which you can probably find for dirt cheap (I did, several months ago.).

BTW, count me among the people who couldn't see the fun in Animal Crossing. Played it once, never played it again.

Hope this helps!

If you liked Metroit Prime, then get Prime 2 after you beat the first one. Definitely worth getting. Pretty much a second of a 2 volume set.

If you have fun playing "party games", then check out Donkey Konga. It's pretty silly but once you start you'll never want to stop.

Electronic Gaming Monthly (and probably every other gaming mag) will have their buyers guides out soon which will list the top 10 games for each system so that will help. I'm sure their list for GC won't be too far from yours.

Also, get the Wavebird controllers. They are the best, despite only being available in two colors here in the states.

You probably won't NEED one of the new white memory cards, but at least get the black one.

My library:

Simpsons Hit & Run
Enter The Matrix
Spider Man 2
WWE Day Of Recknoning

Plus, I've picked up XIII just recently and I gotta say I'm loving so far. It's even got Adam West as the general! All of those I recommend.

The suggestions in http://the-w.com/thread.php/id=22874 turned out to be pretty solid when I was in the same situation you are in. If you can find a place that sells quality used games, you can get all sorts of crazy bargains. I bought Metroid Prime for eight dollars, just for an example. Even if I haven't been able to really get into it. Also, I hate Star Wars: Rogue Leader.
Eternal Darkness is good, one of those fun mindtrip games that mess with the fourth wall between the game and the player.
I hear the Pokémon games are good, too.
Well, good luck.

I hope when you bought your Cube, you picked up this year's holiday bundle. It's the same price ($99.99), but it comes packaged with an extra controller and a copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash!!.

My game library consists of:

Crazy Taxi
Def Jam Vendetta
Eternal Darkness
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time (bonus disc)
The Legend of Zelda Collectors Edition (contains Zelda I, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask)
Madden 2002
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Mario Power Tennis
Metroid Prime
NBA Courtside 2002
Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2
NHL 2003
SSX Tricky
Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II
Star Wars Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Monkey Ball 2
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Wave Race Blue Storm

Of those, I would say the ones I play the most are NBA Courtside 2002 (I'm *this* close to finishing my season - I don't trust the computer to simulate my team; the one time I did, they lost), Mario Golf (I also have the GBA version, and I'm loving the interoperability), any of the Zeldas, and Mario Kart.

Personally, I've found I'm not really any good at FPSs, so I've decided to pass on Metroid Prime 2, and I really stink at both THPS3 and SSX.

I know it's already been mentioned, but Viewtiful Joe 1 is an awesome game. Really solid gameplay without being overly complicated or simplistic. Then again, the PS2 version apparently has more features available on it, so you might want to pick that one up instead (although I personally prefer the way the controls are on the GC better). I know for sure that I'm going to be picking up Viewtiful Joe 2 when it comes out.

Rather than buying these games have you thought about getting GameFly. http://www.gamefly.com/ You pay a monthly fee of 21.95 and can have 2 games out at any time, when you get done with one you send it back and they send you the next game on your list and so on. It has games for all the systems. Just a suggestion, over the past month I've gotten to play and beat MK Deception, Star Ocean, Raw vs. Smackdown, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, X-Men Legends, and Star Wars: BattleFront all for 21.95 rather than buything them all. So if you plan on getting several Gamecube games in addition to PS2 games you might want to check it out rather than buying all these games. I know some people want to own their games but I'd much rather save money.

If you're into RPGs, I heartily recommend Skies of Arcadia. And Viewtiful Joe is awesome old-school fun, as long as you don't mind games that are a little tough.

I suck at 'real' FPSs like Halo and Doom 3 and all the hardcore ones. But Metroid isn't a FPS. And I'm not just saying that to go along with the Nintendo fanatics. It's really more of an adventure platformer in the first person. The controls are much different as well, which will make it easier on anyone that isn't good at FPS games (me).

Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles?

The Mega Man Anniversary Collection (just to reunite Mega Man with Nintendo - I know it's not exclusive)?

I just bought a Cube myself a month ago, for the sole purpose of playing the two Metroid Primes, Wind Waker, the new Zelda, Mario Sunshine and Mario 128 (if it's released for the Cube). I can go on and on about how MP1 and Wind Waker are absolute pleasures to play. I don't know how I can say this about video games, but they're extremely gratifying ways to waste time.

But...Mario Sunshine is one of the most frustrating video games I've ever played - almost to the point where I wouldn't recommend it. In a nutshell - the control and the camera bring back memories of the days that I would smash my NES.

Despite being a Nintendo loyalist since 1985, my Game Cube has spent a vast majority of its existence collecting dust on the floor on front of my TV. Regardless, there are still a number of decent games that I'd like to reiterate the value to:

Metroid Prime - Like BradB, I am positively horrific at FPS games in general; my friends used to slaughter me mercilessly in GoldenEye for N64. However, this is not that. It's a totally intuitive, fantastic game that probably ranks as one of my recent favorites. I just attempted to pick it up again and, about 30% of the way through, am blown away by the graphics and gameplay. Heck, I am even starting to learn how to strafe and jump platforms, which I consider to be a huge accomplishment! This is probably the single-greatest game out for the system.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!! - probably the second best game, and the only one for GC I've fully beaten. Awesome graphics, fun power-ups, and a blast in multiplayer mode. A tremendous improvement over the other games in the series.

Luigi's Mansion - don't laugh. While not a "true" Mario game it's a pretty simple and straightforward exploration game that gives you a good feel towards getting used to the GC's unique controller.

I also found Def Jam: Vendetta to be better on the GC than the PS2 version if you want some AKI goodness. Other than that, if you haven't played or own the originals I'll add my vote for Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes, Resident Evil, Eternal Darkness, Mega Man Anniversary, Zelda Wind Waker, and X-Men Legends (linear but fun if you are a comics fan).

WARNING - Stay away from Super Mario Sunshine. As Mr. Shh states, it has the worst camera I've ever seen. 15 "shines" in, and I nearly shattered my WaveBird after throwing it in frustration, never to play it again. Also stay away from most major Sports games...it's hard to control your players while exclusively using the analog stick; I've grown to despise Madden for this very reason.

This is very, very true. While I don't think it detracts from the overall quality and enjoyment of the game, it's one of the most frustrating ever.

However, this can be said of many of the Gamecube games we've mentioned here:

Super Monkey Ball - Once you get to the later levels, you'll be pulling your hair out
Mario Kart - This can be very frustrating to the point of smashing things in the later levels
Metroid Prime 2 - This game's bosses have been frustrating me, probably because my power levels aren't p to where they should be. But I've almost thrown my Wavebird throug the window a couple of times hehe

Eternal Darkness is incredible. It's good to see so many actually agree on that sentiment. Good luck finding the purple rune if you get it.

Windwaker, Luigi's Mansion, Metroid Prime and Prime 2, and the new Zelda on it's way are the big titles. I haven't played Sunshine, and as far as party games go, definitely get Smash Bros. and WarioWare Party. Smash Bros. is one of those games that you'll learn in seconds, take a lifetime to master. WarioWare is better than Mario Party, IMO, if only for the more mature yet slightly raunchy humor of it all (a game where the object is to pick your nose comes to mind).

Wario Ware is great but does wear out after a while. Even the tremendous amount of games won't seem like enough after you've played all the way through it once.

Is Soul Caliber 2 worth buying? I noticed it's Player's Choice now for $19.99 so I've been contemplating getting it. I'm a fan of Street Fighter 2, but haven't been into fighting games since Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo came out. Do you think I would dig SC2?

In other words, is it worth getting because it's more than just an advanced fighting game? Or will I have to be good at fighting games to enjoy it?

I'm not much into fighters, but Soul Caliber 2 is a great game. If you can find it at about 20 bucks, go for it.

If you are into old school fighters, I HIGHLY recommend Capcom Vs. SNK 2 for the Gamecube. I admit that I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I absolutely love the game, from sound, graphics, controls, down to character selection.
