Originally posted by Bill Ladson/MLB.comWASHINGTON, D.C. -- City and team officials announced at a Monday press conference at Union Station that Washington, D.C.'s baseball team will be named the Nationals. The name change comes almost two months after Major League Baseball announced that the team was relocating from Montreal to Washington, D.C. The team will play its home games at RFK Stadium during the 2005 season.
With team president Tony Tavares and interim general manager Jim Bowden in attendance, the Nationals also revealed a new logo and uniform color scheme, which is red, blue and gold.
The Nationals were competing against such names as the Senators and Grays. Senators was the name of the previous two Major League Baseball franchises in Washington and Grays was a Negro League team based in Pittsburgh.

No, that was some yahoo from the DC Statehood Party kvetching about the cost of the stadium deal vis-à-vis actually educating students in DC.
(That's the one thing that could kill this deal still. They still don't have the bill passed the city council, and they still haven't finalized a deal with Angelos. That and the fact that just now the city council's movements are trying to force the hand in raising $150 million in private money to fund the deal. This team could still wind up in Virginia...)

Can she do that? It doesn't look much nicer than your run-of-the-mill cybersquatting/trademark infringement case. Assuming they keep the team name, I'd imagine they'd try to claim the domain too.
You know what would be great? They can't get the money for the ballpark. You know what else would be great? If the Limited Partners can get through the courts.
At the VERY LEAST could they please....PLEASE....give my Expos a good name.
A plague on the House of Loria. A plague too on Washington.

After the announcement you should have heard our NBC guy, George Michaels, talk about the team.
Everybody was excited about "our" team and almost everyday he's reminding us how NOTHING is final and Mayor Williams and the Bad News DC Gov't can still fuck it up.
Owners? None. Financial plan? None. Council vote? None.
There's only about 34 days until the end of the year, when this all has to be done, right?
And now, for a limited time only, THE BAND IS OUT ON THE FIELD!!!"

I find it funny how none of these things are in place, but everyone is still acting like everything is just a mere formality. I guess it is, sort of, when it took the MLB three years to move the team to DC when it looked like they were the only viable option right from the start.
