Big Blue isn't making the playoffs this season, and if they somehow got in at 8-8, they would be bounced in Week 1, so they might as well take the lumps with Eli now rather than waste next season. Why do what the Bengals did last season in having Kitna go the whole season, still miss the playoffs, and then step backwards for a year when Palmer took the position. And, it's not like the Falcons and the Eagles will blitz the pathetic O-Line of the Giants all game. 95% of the game probably, but not the whole game.

The only concern a Charger fan should have about the Giants now is whether the ineptitude of the rest of the NFC allows them to steal a wild card at 8-8. As a playoff team, that would mean their 8-8 record would have a later spot in the first round than an AFC team that misses the playoffs at 10-6. And god only knows what happens if the NFC regresses so far that 7-9 finally breaks into the playoff promise land.

But the Giants are not giving up on this season. Having watched nearly every minute of every game the Giants have played this season, this cannot be construed as giving up. Kurt Warner has been pretty ineffective the last four weeks. There needs to be a shakeup and Manning couldn't be any worse than Warner. Warner has been holding the ball way too long in the pocket and has been sacked too many times. At 5-4, the Giants are no lock for the playoffs, but the season is far from over.
Oh man oh man oh man I cannot wait for December 18th when Mr. Manning is introduced to Mr. LeBeau's defense led by Mr.'s Porter and Bell. I think it'll prove to be a long half season of learning for Eli. God help him, because the heat is now officially on.
At least the Giants seem to be doing this the right way. Give the kid some prep time, announce he is the starter, let him prepare as the starter and then he is in...
Unlike the Buffalo Bills, who unceramoniously throw poor J.P Losman into the game against the Pats, down 29-6 without knowledge that he is going into the game.
He was the 3rd QB, emergency style, still hasn't had a full week of practice since being injured in camp. Not only that, the coaches get Shane Matthews warming up, then suddenly decide that they should drop Losman in....
I know we are only 9 games into the year, but I already wonder about Mike Mularkey....

Eli's got a big weight on his shoudlers this weekend, as rookie quarterbacks have not lost a start this season. And yes, that includes Craig Krenzel's beautiful 3-0. Wonder if Eli would like things better behind San Diego's O-line? With LT to hand off to? And the beach, and the beautiful powder blue throwbacks? I don't know the whole story (only the Mannings do), but it really seems like a bad decision to go to New York. Hope the media eats him alive.

Agent: Tell you what, sir. From now on, you'll be, uh, Homer Thompson at Terror Lake. Let's just practise a bit, hmm? When I say, "Hello, Mr. Thompson," you'll say, "Hi." Homer: Check. Agent: Hello, Mr. Thompson. Homer: [stares blankly] Agent: Remember now, your name is Homer Thompson. Homer: I gotcha. Agent: Hello, Mr. Thompson. Homer: [stares blankly] [A long time later] Agent: [sighs in frustration] Now, when I say, "Hello, Mr. Thompson," and press down on your foot, you smile and nod. Homer: No problem. Agent: Hello, Mr. Thompson! [stomps on Homer's foot a few times] Homer: [stares blankly then says to other agent] I think he's talking to you.....

I really doubt Eli Manning is concerned more with Craig Krenzel having not lost than he is with not getting himself killed behind the Giants offensive line.
I don't really like the decision, because yes, it is giving up. You're 5-4 and there are teams all around you that are tied with you at that record or one game back. They're sliding, and they go to a rookie. The other teams didn't go to rookies voluntarily, and neither of those quarterbacks are being asked to win the games for their team. They're being asked to not screw up the games. Roethlisberger has great receivers, good running and his team plays defense. Krenzel's team plays defense and has gotten very lucky for three games, because he stinks and so does their entire offense.
I don't know that the Giants really have the players to take the heat off of Eli and win around him as much as - if not more than - they win because of him, like the other two have.
The timing of it couldn't be worse in some ways. His line is playing badly, Strahan just went down for the year meaning support from the D is lessened, his brother's having a career year, and Roethlisberger's performance means Eli has to be near perfect to make the price the Giants paid for him look good this year.
Oh, and he's coming up against a couple of pretty vicious blitzing defences.
That said, Warner's showing signs of regressing to the QB he was at the end of his time with the Rams, losing confidence, holding onto the ball way too long, so the Giants didn't really have a whole lot of choice. Ideally they'd probably like to have made the move earlier, but Warner picking up a W against the Vik's made it impossible to do so.
I don't believe its giving up simply because he's got above average receiving targets and a damn fine running back to support him, so he really only needs to play pretty good to have the Giants be competitive. Time will tell I guess.

Surely they told him in advance something like "if we don't do anything this drive, you're going in". That's when you should put your rookie first-round QBs whose names have less than 14 letters in, when they're not under any pressure to do anything but go out, have fun, not get hurt, and get acclimated to the NFL game.
I'm pretty afraid for Eli at this point, but I still think if his last name was Smith he'd have been the third or fourth QB drafted, not the #1 pick.

Who would've thought that Tiki Barber could become a damn fine running back? The man has really surprised me this year.

I do agree that if you are wearing the uniform on the sidelines, then you should always be ready, but according to all media reports, they did not prepare him for this at all. He has been injured and is just now starting to practice regularly.
They even had Shane Matthews warming up on the sidelines prior to sending Losman in...

Was Losman actually the 3rd QB? Because I thought the NFL said the 3rd QB was inactive, and could only play if the first 2 QBs got hurt. I have no idea how they would enforce the rule, but the 3rd QB is supposed to be on the inactive list.

You can only play the 3rd QB in the 4th-quarter and be able to take him out. If you play him in the first three quarters you can't go back to another QB, as he's supposed to be an injury replacement only.

That is the crux of the problem. This line is good enough for Tiki to be running for 100 yards every week. They have been good enough when Warner was taking his drop and throwing the ball. Everyone is now on the line for being so crappy now because Warner is back there waiting and waiting and waiting. Make a decision and throw the ball. I am sure Coughlin is all over Manning this week making sure he knows to get the ball out of there. I will be surprised if you see Manning sacked more than twice this week.

I don't know about this being Warner's fault. Let's face it, the Giant's line sucks at pass protection while being quite good at run blocking. Petigout is doing some of the best "ole" blocking I've ever seen from a supposedly good player. Dr.Z (sportsillustrated.cnn.com) breaks it down pretty nicely and I find it hard to argue with most of the points he's making.

Kurt Warner has Doug Flutie complex as he can play well enough to improve your team, have your team in a playoff position (They are in 6th seed in the NFC according to Zeruel). Then gets benched in favor of the golden boy right in the middle of their push... Warner deserves to be in there at least until they are out of an official playoff spot.
He had a bad start, but had a better second half. Falcons once again really just did enough to win.
