Clarett: I Got Cash, Cars at Ohio State

Uh-oh, Buckeyes fans. This is sort of similar to how the Huskies got taken down (with the revelation of Billy Joe Hobert's improper loans).

Clarett thinks by taking down a program that feeds a bunch of players to the NFL his stock will rise with league executives? Maurice should start learning the words to the Canadian National Anthem.
If half this stuff is true, OSU is looking at possible forfeiture of games during Clarett's season for using an ineligible player, thus possible loss of BCS money. Now, the reason why there will never be a Division I playoff in College Football: They can't strip Ohio State of the National Title as they can do with Final Four appearances in College Basketball, as it is a non-NCAA group that awards the title.

I have an idea of what else would help his stock with the NFL...not showing up out of shape and actually performing well at the combine.

What a gutless thing to do. If the guy hadn't taken the money and ratted the team out there might be something to say for him, but to take all the perks and then try to blow the whistle on people who helped him out is bush league. He dug himself into a hole trying to leave early, dug himself in deeper by suing the NFL, and unless there's some sort of widespread grudge in the NFL against Ohio State that hasn't come to light, this will only dig him deeper. I hope he never plays a pro game, in the NFL or otherwise.

So he cheated...that shows a lack of integrity. Then he voluntarily rats everyone and anyone out....that shows a lack of loyalty. I'm not a ta ll sure how this would clear his name....he admitted to taking improper benefits. That puts a black mark on his name. And why the hell do squeal on the people who tried to set you up for the rest of your life?

Well, this guys is clearly more trouble than he was worth. He never impressed me nearly as much as he impressed some people.

Actually, since this quote (bold added by me) is directly taken out of the article:

"I'm thinking, 'NFL GMs know college players take money,' " Clarett says. "It was nothing like I stole something. Nothing like I'm running from the law or I'm dragging a girl down the stairs. No domestic violence. No nothing. [But] I got to clear myself up now, because it's affecting the minds of the GMs."

I'd say he's probably saying "Damn, he's using ME as a comparison, and he looks good." Then he looks down at his empty ring finger and lets out a slight *sob*.

Nuclear Winter: Celebrating one whole year of mediocre posts.

Come on. Does anyone seriously believe anything Maurice Clarett says? Yes, let's listen to the guy who's pretty much vowed to screw over OSU.

Cooper, who was suspended from the team following two arrests for drug possession, says he also had bogus landscaping jobs, that a booster helped furnish his apartment, and that he was able to borrow cars from local Columbus dealerships in exchange for signed OSU memorabilia.

Oh, nevermind. We can believe him. Because his story is being backed up by former player who was suspended by the team for his two arrests over drug charges.

Even if the accusations are true, I have no respect for a guy who is perfectly willing to accept all of these improper benefits, when he obviously knows it's wrong, then comes out later and says "Umm... oh yeah, Ohio State did bad stuff. Go after them."

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like he's just trying to distract the school and the team from the the most important part of their season: next week against Purdue, and then against Meeeeechigan.

DISCLAIMER: I am an Ohio State Buckeye fanatic, and my views may therefore be overly pro-OSU.

I met him fifteen years ago. I was told there was nothing left. No reason, no conscience, no understanding; even the must rudimentary sense of life or death, good and evil, right or wrong. I met this six year old child, with this bland, pale, emotionless face. And the blackest eyes... the Devil's eyes. I spent eight years try to reach him, and then another seven trying to keep him locked up, for I realized what was living behind that boy's eyes was purely and simply... Evil.

As I said in my first post, this REALLY reminds me of the Billy Joe Hobert situation. Billy Joe took a $50K loan from a guy (Charles Rice) that he promised to repay with the money he'd earned playing in the NFL. That is a HUGE NO-NO, right up there with gambling as far as the NCAA's concerned.

At first, it was dismissed as an isolated incident, including Steve Emtman's famous quote, "Billy's an idiot". THEN Billy Joe's nice car was the story, THEN his gun collection, THEN he was suspended and the #1 Huskies lost for the first time in 22 games at Arizona. THEN it came out that lots of people (kind of like these guys at OSU) knew about it. All of this led to the big investigation that ultimately revealed the cushy jobs (sound familiar?) and cell phones and boosters acting improperly, which led to probation and our perennial eight-to-nine win team becoming a perennial six-to-seven win team. (Though I'd KILL for six wins, now.)

This timeline is excerpted from a Seattle Post-Intelligencer article reviewing Barbara Hedges' run as Athletic Director at the UW. Is it too hard to be looking ahead to 2005 with a similar one for the OSU program?

1992

JAN. 1: The UW football team is voted No. 1 in the final USA Today/CNN coaches poll after a 34-14 victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl.

JULY 3: Hedges says graduation rates for UW football players are "embarrassingly low."

NOV. 10: Washington strips QB Billy Joe Hobert of his athletic eligibility after learning he received loans totaling $50,000 from boosters.

DEC. 8: The Los Angeles Times reports that boosters provided cash, jobs and other benefits to numerous UW athletes.

DEC. 10: UW football players become targets of an investigation by the Secret Service over the use of cellular phones that had been altered to avoid billing.

DEC. 15: At Hedges' direction, the athletic department hires a Kansas City law firm to conduct an independent investigation of its football team and the boosters associated with it.

1993

JUNE 23: Fearing further booster misdeeds, Hedges disbands "Husky Hunters," a group of 200 football supporters that aided the school's recruiting efforts for 20 years.

JUNE 24: Following a seven-month investigation, the Pac-10 alleges the UW football program committed 31 NCAA rules violations. The conference says if allegations prove true, the UW could face numerous sanctions, including a bowl ban and a loss of scholarships.

AUG. 5: The UW admits to 17 of the 31 rules violations, acknowledging booster impropriety in recruiting and players' summer employment.

AUG. 22: The Pac-10 hands down a two-year bowl ban and other assorted penalties against the UW football program, prompting James to resign after 18 years as head coach. Hedges quickly names Jim Lambright, the team's defensive coordinator, as interim head coach.

The other guy listed in the original article, Ryan Hockensmith, wrote for the Daily Collegian here at Penn State. It took a Penn Stater to root out the problems at OSU! (Hah!)

He hasn't been out of college long, but I guess he's a full-time writer for ESPN the magazine. I thought he'd be an assistant or something, but I guess he's ambitious.

He did catch meningitis and he almost died on a football road trip, but I'm just about positive that was on the trip to Illinois, not Ohio State.

Interestingly enough, on "Mike & Mike" this morning they made the point that Clarrett contacted ESPN the Magazine, not the other way around. So now he has brought this down on himself, and an investigation is sure to follow. "I don't know" is not going to be an acceptable answer this time, Mo.

BigVitoMark - my thoughts EXACTLY. If he had integrity, he would have known what he was doing was wrong and not accepted the favors. (Yeah, I know, almost nobody is gonna turn down "free money".) So to come off as, "I'm not the bad guy" is really weak.

What an ass.

At least Phillips was able to cash in a bit. As opposed to, say, Cecil "The alcohol had my mind" Collins, who pissed away multiple last chances (both in football and with the judicial system) before he ended up in the can with nothing to show for his football career.

They had Ryan on the late night ESPN show and he doesn't even know what to believe. He did say that OSU's President or some high upper wouldn't even talk without getting the questions first, so that kinda tipped them off. I guess his subordinate reports also got kicked off of car lots when asking questions about Ohio State players. I am guessing where there is smoke, there is fire. Its a weird story and probably with Clarrett's zero creditablity it won't go anywhere. However, Ryan did say that other OSU players are coming out to his defense, but wouldn't name names. It was a good interview and you got the feeling from Ryan that he is got up in the whirlwind.

Looks like former Buckeye and Minnesota Viking RB Robert Smith is corroborating part of Clarett's story.

Sure hope this thing gets sorted out before The Game next weekend. Hate to see the announcers overshadow the game by bringing this crap up the whole time.

(Note about Rev's sig: NCAA 2005 is the one that's out now. You're thinking that should be NCAA 2006.)

Now it's cpming out the players at Youngstown State got paid while Tressel was the coach there. It's not looking good, Buckeye fans.

Nuclear Winter: Celebrating one whole year of mediocre posts.

As a Buckeye fanatic, these reports are starting to worry me more and more.

Pretty much the only thing giving me hope right now is that these just don't sound like the kinds of things Tressel would do.

I guess we'll find out in due time.

I saw most of this game. I think ESPN's Tom Jackson talked about how stopping the run between the tackles may be Tampa's only weakness, but after watching I think that you would have to think Tampa's special teams are a little suspect, too.
