Tony Kornheiser Returns To WTEM/Washington

R&R has confirmed that Kornheiser, who gave up his WTEM-based ESPN Radio show earlier this year, will return to "The Team" next week to host a new live and local radio show from 9-11am, Monday-Friday. Kornheiser will also continue as co-host of ESPN's weekday show Pardon the Interruption, along with fellow Washington Post sportswriter Michael Wilbon.

This is the best news I have heard in a while. I have been waiting for this since that fateful March 26th, when Andy had to fill in the last hour and a half. Are there any plans to put the show on XM? It would make sense since I know he has a national fanbase. I'm going to have to finally figure out and buy the Replay Radio thing that you always talk about. Thanks very much for the TK blog as well, I read it frequently and it was how I found out the great news.

Replay Radio is a great thing and really not that expensive (I think $30).

Sources close to the show have mentioned the letters X and M (which is in Washington and TK is a fan of it).

Since I didn't mention it before, the show will be on from 9-11 and then repeated at 11-1, thereby saving the District from having to listen to Colin Cowherd.

I have had XM since August '02, and I use it everyday, its great. I sincerely hope it is on XM, as I just bought a SkyFi2 as well. If not I'll make due with the Replay Radio, I'm just glad he is back. Any idea why he chose to do two hours instead of three like before? Just wondering, please keep me up to date if there is any XM news.

Lucky bastards.

Anyone else see the irony that is DC putting TK on in his old timeslot, replacing his replacement from his ESPN show?

Given that PTI is worked on by TK and Wilbon from around 1 until taping at 4 ish, TK would end up doing either morning Drive or middays. And, for a variety of reasons I can't necessarily talk about, doing the morning show would be difficult. And starting the midday show at 9 is part of that.

My biggest concern, if you want to call it that, is that TK will have too much material on any given day to squeeze into 2 hours. But without being under ESPN's thumb, he'll have no pressure to talk about anything (mainstream sports) that he doesn't want to talk about on a particular day.

My other question is will the show have a big enough budget to have some of the old school regulars back on the show on a regular basis (Ryan, Sam Smith, Gammons, Mel, Stephen Hunter).

Tony K replacement on ESPN is really bad IMO... I think the affiliate that had it has dropped it for local guys, wouldn't blame them.

smark/net attack wienerville advisory holds at ORANGE alert - High (JBL is STILL WWE champion and now smarks arch enemy HHH is the World Champion. Major red threat, but the undercard seems okay. The alert holds... for now)- 9/19

My first thought was that he had so much info when he had three hours, to pack it all into two would be that much harder. Maybe the commercial breaks would be shorter than the about 7 minute ones on ESPM Radio. I would like to see the show be put on XM, and have a return of the "Internet Show," but on XM. I doubt that would happen, but how great would that be.
Being in the Central time zone, I would much rather have him do the midday slot than drive, because I would never get to hear the drive, live that is. Morning drive is a tougher slot I would think, there being battles for ratings and all. Plus, since the ad rates are higher, I don't believe he would be as free to do what he wanted as he would in midday.
I would hope that he would bring back some of the best guests that were on the old show. Ryan and D.A. were two of the best I always thought. Wilbon I'm sure will make some appearances as well. Maybe, doubtfully, we'll hear from "the woman to whom he is related by marriage."
All in all, I can't wait for Wednesday morning.

Here's some news, fresh off the phone from Mr. Tony himself, asking your questions (well, my questions, as asked by emailers):

1. Will there be phone calls? -- maybe, probably at some point.

2. Will there be emails? -- Oh sure. The address (something involving "this show stinks") is yet TBA. Once we get it, you'll get it.

3. Email jingle? -- Yes. In fact, Gary "Big Time" Braun may be on the first show tomorrow.

4. Old regulars? -- Many of the old familiar faces (and Wilbon). Mel will likely be picking games this week on the show. Look for most of the friends of the show (Ryan, Sam Smith, ...). And, of course, there's Wilbon.

5. Movie reviews? -- Yes. Stephen Hunter is working on his next book, so either Stephen or Joe Barber will be on the show on Fridays. And Lisa De Moreas will be on the show, talking TV.

I'm psyched - since I don't always get into the office and have the computer fired up in time for the 8AM start (Central), I'm planning on catching the re-airing at 10.

What? I'l miss two hours of Cowherd? Awwwww
EDIT: Just noticed that if you go to ESPNRadio.com, Tony's picture is back in its proper place in the header, with Cowherd's nowhere in sight. Gotta love someone's sense of humor.

The first two days have been great I have thought. He hasn't quite gotten the studio down yet, but that makes the show that much more interesting. It sure has not taken him long to hit his stride.

I just realized something...that's 6am/8am my time. HOWEVAH, it's probably worth waking up for.

Are the shows going to be archived on the site at all? I don't think my PC has the balls to run anything new and fancy like Replay Radio...although if I end up buying the new one I think I'm going to get, it definately will.

THe streaming quality is hit and miss. And the commercials keep running long and then cutting into the show.

But hey, those are small complaints.

I have noticed that the commercials are running a bit long, but thats a minor thing I'm sure they can fix. Has anyone noticed that it sounds like there is another show under TK's voice on the webstream? I can't quite make out what it is under his voice, but its definitely something. I heard him mention today that he was hoping to be on satellite radio by 3 PM today (Friday) or by the early part of next week. I'm assuming this will be XM, but you know what they say about what happens when you assume...

I e-mailed about audio quality problems, and the webmaster replied that they're working on things.

Whitebacon - It's also replayed from 10-12 Central (that's when I catch it).

My hunch is that satellite probably won't be until the new year. No inside baseball on that, it would just make the most sense.

I started watching "Lost" when they showed the repeats in December (didn't watch it originally), and now I'm hooked. When they first introduced Shannon and Boone as sister and brother, I thought that was odd....
