Well now that the whole curse garbage is over, can we finally get some love for the team in the AL that has gone the longest without a World Series title: the WHITE Sox. The Red Sox have now won 2 World Series since the White Sox last won in 1917. We haven't even been to the Series since 1959. I was happy to see this from ESPN's Eric Neel today:
"Eric: We still like them -- great bunch of hitters and personalities -- but the whole Red Sox thing, and I'm including the fan base, the media machine, all of it, is less special, is all I'm saying. The fight now for suffering supremacy shifts to Chicago, doesn't it? And forget the Cubs for a minute. I'm thinking of the White Sox. Haven't won the Series since 1917, haven't reached the World Series since 1959. And unlike their slightly yuppier brethren on the North Side, Sox fans, by and large, are working on the deep, common-folk channels of heartache and want-to. The media story has been the Cubs, and the Cubs are, by a wide margin, Chicago's team, but to me, it's the White Sox Nation who ought to become America's team now."
At least someone has finally recognized us for who we are, a long suffering group of fans who know that the lack of success has nothing to do with a curse, and everything to do with some bad ownership and management for the last 87 years. Congrats to the Red Sox and their fans, and I hope I get to feel the same way about the White Sox sometime in my lifetime.

I understand this, but the difference between the Sox is that the Red Sox have been thisclose a few times before this year ('46, '67, '75, '86, '03) with the White Sox haven't even been close to that close. Like the Red Sox (and Cubs), they gave you hope only to take it away. The White Sox NEVER come close to thinking about giving you hope.

At least the Red Sox aren't in the Tribe's division anymore. And make no mistake, the Red Sox are my *second* favorite baseball team. But Lord, I hates the White Sox. Almost as much as I hate the Yankers.

I liked the response to Eric Neel on that remark of his...
David: Here's the problem I have with the White Sox: they threw the Series in 1919; they deserve to be cursed, to tell you the truth. As for the Cubs and their fans, I just hope they don't embrace all the whiny, self-loathing, often pathetic mindset of RSN. We can only hope and pray that Jay Mariotti isn't penning a book called "Curse of the Billy Goat." I mean, he already gets enough face time on ESPN. Plus, the Cubs' management doesn't really seem to care about winning anyway; and let's face it, Wrigley Field is more social scene than ballpark filled with die-hard baseball fans. So, really, I vote for the Cleveland Indians as most cursed baseball team ... 1948 and counting ... and, sorry, Cubs fans, losing a World Series in which you lead Game 7 in the bottom of the ninth inning is infinitely more painful than losing Game 6 and blaming a fan ...
Eric: Let me get this: you're blaming the current White Sox and their fans for the Black Sox scandal? Dude, you're hardcore.
David: Hey, don't blame me, curses are hardcore. Just ask the Bambino.

Goddammit, now you just soured my day a bit. Makes it even more fun here that the FREAKIN MARLINS rebuilt and won the WS *already*, while the Tribe has taken the longer, more painful road to rebuilding. It's the curse of Rocky Colavito, I tells ya! *waits for money to come rolling in*

The White Sox will never be the team America roots for or any of that stuff for a couple of reasons:
1) The owner is the anti-christ. Reinsdorf forced through the 94 strike, then when he didn't get everything he wanted from it, he did the Albert Belle deal just to be pissy and screw up the salary structure.
2) The Cubs. As long as the widdle Flubs have their beer garden up north full of Trixies in bikinis and Chads in backwards ball caps they will alwyas be the chic team and the team everyone follows.
3) The fanbase. White Sox fans don't give a shit about cute hooks like the Curse of the Bambino or The Billy Goat. We suffer the way the working folk suffer every day. Quietly, waiting for the day to end to drink our beer and watch our team lose or win and bitch about the manager. Reading yesterday all the articles being written remembering those who lived and suffered with the Red Sox, I thought about all the White Sox fans who never lived to see it, but whose passing isn't romanticized. My grandfather who watched the Sox for 76 years before he died will never get the tear-jerker articles. Because we shun that sort of cheap and easy sentimentality. We are not catchy. We are not cool. We just love baseball, we love our team, and will forever. And if the rest of the country wants to cheer for the Cubs or the Red Sox or the Indians or other teams who "Deserve" to win one, well, fuck em. We don't need anyone but us.

MY book entitled "The Miami Dolphins and the Curse of The Southmen" should be available in time for Christmas.
(just to clarify what the hell it is I'm talking about, in 1974, Larry Csonka, Paul Warfield and Jim Kiick were money- whipped away from the Dolphins to join the Memphis Southmen of the fledgling and short-lived WFL when they couldn't squeeze two nickels out of the notoriously thrifty Joe Robbie come re-negotation time...the Dolphins have never won a Super Bowl since.)

aw, my ass. The Damned Sox fans are the biggest asses in baseball. They treat you like crap when you come to their shithole ballpark and they stop coming to the games about mid-august, because it's time for them to start rooting for another team that has no possibility of winning in this century. (as dey say on da sout side, 'Da Bears) They got a new ballpark, I dunno, 10 or 15 years ago and it's just as crappy as the old smelly comisky ever was - but without the charm of obstructed view seating. They have announcers who wouldn't know a real insight to the game if it came up at bit them and just yell and it sounds so EXCITING WHEN THE HAWK YELLS.
And mostly, they take up unneeded time on 'GN when an interesting team could be on TV.
Sorry, SPF, I know a few of you Sox fans are OK, but the great majority are absolute dicks. At least the yups that sort of follow the Cubs while getting their Lattes are inoffensive while I am trying to watch a game. And for goodness sake, at least our color guys know we're playing Baseball and have a clue.
Who does radio for the Pale Hose, anyway? Now that I am out of town, I haven't paid attention. WMVP have the Sox?

I believe it's still John Rooney and Ed Farmer, whom, as a Cards fan, I loved listening to while the station I worked at ran the games a few years back. Rooney's a god, and the fact that the Cards almost got him instead of Wayne Hagin two years ago makes me cry.
That said, as much as Rooney and Farmer rock, and as much fun as Mike Shannon is on KMOX, NO ONE touches Pat Hughes and Ron Santo on Radio 720. NO ONE. I left Catholicism for Hughes.

Oh, please. Santo????? His contribution to the broadcast consists of him making noises, either good or bad, depending on what happens on the field. ESPNRadio just skewers him, justifiably, nearly every day of the baseball season.

Maybe teams that throw World Series don't deserve to EVER win one?

Well then fold 'em up and close 'em down. If they don't deserve to ever win one, why are they even in the league?
Why the White Sox won't get national sympathy (fair or unfair):
1) 1919. Black Sox scandal will always be thrown at them as why they don't deserve any.
2) Ballpark: Red Sox play at Fenway. Cubs play at Wrigley. Only memory most non-White Sox fans have of old Comiskey is Disco Demolition Night, and no one cares about new Comiskey, which if Reinsdorf was a visionary (insert joke here spf) would have been a Camden Yards rather than a cookie cutter.
3) Cubs: As long as another team in the same city has gone longer, they get the attention. Plus, the national media loves the Fuzzy Cubbies.
4) They don't get close. Red Sox always got to the brink, and then lost in spectacular fashion. White Sox just lose, or throw Buerhle in Detroit on Friday instead of New York on Thursday because they don't want to go for a sweep, and then they lose to Detroit anyway. I still remember that brainstorm by Manuel last year. And, as long as Reinsdorf owns the team, waving the White Flag 3 1/2 games out on July 31st of '97 will be remembered.
And, as for the title of the thread, the parade is Saturday. I would have absolutely no problem seeing Red Sox/Yankees Game 8 on Sunday Night. Rather see that than 49ers/Bears.

That's correct, I missed that one.
Reinsdorf is almost Steinbrennerian in his unlikeability, so my chances of newfound White Sox fandom are slim.

A Sunday afternoon game on Memorial Day weekend? Only shot you have is to show up at Fenway with several pictures of Ben Franklin in your pocket to give scalpers. Either that or be lucky enough to get standing room tickets.
