In this thread (http://the-w.com/thread.php/id=22752) I made a flippant comment about this election might determine who the "worst president ever" is, and figured it might be an interesting idea for a full thread. Just to keep things civil, nobody is allowed to pick any president who has served in, oh, let's say the last four years.

My picks....
1) Warren Harding. Ran one of the most corrupt administrations in history, was involved in the Teapot Dome scandal, and basically did nothing in his three years.

2) Andrew Johnson. Virulent racist, even for the 19th century when ALL presidents were basically racists. Bent over backwards to favour the South after the Civil War and vetoed many civil rights bills that got him impeached by Congress and nearly kicked out of office (according to lore, Johnson was only let off since the guy who would've taken office, Speaker of the House Benjamin Wade, was an even bigger nutbar).

3) Richard Nixon. Dug America deeper into the Vietnam War, ruined the public's trust in the presidency for arguably all time with Watergate, wasn't really that funny on Laugh-In.

For the record, Canada's worst prime minister is more difficult to call. The way our system works, we have several PMs who were in office for only a few months. My personal pick is Mackenzie Bowell, who apparently had a personality that would've made Mr. Burns look sweet.

I thought Nixon got us out of Vietnam...oh! From what I've read, Woodrow Wilson was one of the worst presidents that are looked on in reverence.

Of course, do you suppose it's worse to do something bad as a president, or to essentially be ineffectual? William Henry Harrison comes to mind for the second category.

Here in Canada, we habve conflicting reports about our last Prime Minister, Jean Chretien. While people are pleased as punch that he balanced the budget, his wanton abuse of power, and his inability to be accountable to the public left a bad taste in each others mouth.

Come to think about it, they still haven't said where those millions (or was that Billions?) went in the HRDC scandal.

hehehee...no wonder I voted NDP in the last election.

Wilson was bad because of the League of Nations fiasco, but he was not nearly as bad as FDR leading us on the road to socialism...

Yeah, FDR was terrible for leading the country after Pearl Harbor and creating the New Deal that kept America's economy from a total bust. I would put out that the country was 33% registered Communist during FDR's term. So, if it went down some socialism its better than the total communism that would have occured if he did not set into place that evil welfare program.

After studying political science for seven years, I can tell you having straight communism or capitailism will eventually lead to destruction. It will last for a while, but if you don't adapt to a changing world, you'll eventually die.

As far as worst Presidents go, LBJ is high on my list. He did form the civil rights act, but that and the space program were set-up by Kennedy before his death. So, he just inherited them while leading the nation into a pure choas that was the Vietnam War. He did do the sane thing and not run, but his Presidency was a joke. Nixon did get us out of Vietnam, but Johnson could have ended before he left, but Nixon's officals started brokering deals behind there backs and it lead to nothing. Nixon keep the country in Vietnam longer than neccessary, so lets not go patting him on the pack for seeing the forest from the trees, three years too late.

Its easy to attack the modern Presidents, but I will say the current guy sitting in the White House is perhaps the worst President we ever had. His election is highly suspicious, his policies ignore basic common sense and his T.B.S, Total Believer Syndrom, has lead the country to an unwinnable war and occupation. If he gets elected again and somehow Congress goes back in 2006, he'll get impeached before its over. The reason he hasn't is because of the rubber stamp Congress we have now.

I will say Wilson's League of Nations and getting into World War I were a good ideas, but his sedition laws is what kills him from being a good President.

I can see that rationally arguing any of the above statements would only prove a fruitless pursuit, as you get progressively more insane with each sentence.

Maybe you should just stick to posting your opinions over on the InsidePulse message board, where it isn't so much a "Republican spin zone" like it is here, thanks mainly to me (insidepulse.com).

You mean the board where FLEA is in charge and blatently abusive to people that get out of line, troll or...you know...Thank You kindly, PAL ;-)

As far as "worst" presidents, keep in mind that Abraham Lincoln was considered THE WORST at the time of his presidency and was killed for the very reason we honor him reverently today (I think most "polls" rate Lincoln tops, or a least Top 3.) I don't think an accurate judgment can be made for at *least* 100 years. Which includes all of the "American Century" presidents

Since someone took Jimmy, let's not forget John Tyler, the only President to serve in the Senate of a hostile power after his term ended. That Clay and Webster were never Whig President's but Tyler backed into it is up there on the historical oddities.
Andrew Jackson's financial policies regarding the Bank of the United States didn't hurt during his term, but led to the Panic of '37 and killed Van Buren's Presidency. On the positive side, at least he was President before the atom bomb.
And Last, and certainly Least: James Buchanan. When states secede during a President's time in office and he just sits and does nothing about it, he gets the eternal bottom slot amongst Presidents.

I think everybody just forgets about him. I mean, the most memorable thing about his term was that he was attacked by a giant swimming rabbit.

I think we're too close to presidents before, say 1960, to judge just how bad they are or how good.

I'd put forth Franklin Pierce as my "worst president" candidate, with Millard Fillmore right behind. Here's why. Fillmore (more about him later) has signed the Great Compromise of 1850 and Pierce and the Democrats ran on the Compromise - but as soon as Pierce got in, he started pissing off both sides, possibly because Jeff Davis was his Secretary of War, possibly because Marcy was his secretary of State or possibly because he was a dolt. He actually signed the Kansas/Nebraska act, basically starting a war over slavery in what came to be called "Bloody Kansas" He spent all his other time trying to gain other properties, like the Gadston Purchase - he also tried to buy Cuba duing his office.

He basically ignored Kansas and his party didn't even consider him for renomination.

Pretty bad, huh?

Millard Fillmore - He listened to the Polls and went the way the wind blew. Supported slavery when it seemed to help him (compromise of 1850 and fugitive slave act) and was against it when it seemed it would help him. Just a nothing president who paved the way for the civil war.

He can count himself lucky that Prierce and Buchanan followed him - he's almost ok in comparison to them.

I agree it's too early to historically call George W. Bush the Worst President Ever. It certainly looks like he's going to be down there, but we can't look at his one term in enough of a historical context to truly realize how destructive it's going to be.

Ruthless Reviews weighed in on the same topic a few months ago, and I pretty much agreed with their analysis:

More than that, Wilson not once mentioned the pandemic in public, and no one can provide any evidence that he discussed it in private either. While cities like Philadelphia virtually shut down for months at a time (the deaths were so numerous that families stacked dead relatives at the morgue like firewood), Wilson railed endlessly about the evil Krauts and how nothing meant anything until the Kaiser was hung by his balls. Woodrow is truly evil man who deserves historys strongest condemnation.

"It's not a matter of whether the war is not real, or if it is. Victory is not possible. The war is not meant to be won, it is meant to be continuous. Hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance. This new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed. In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. The war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is not the victory over either Eurasia or East Asia but to keep the very structure of society intact."

I'm still struggling with the fact that people can consider George W Bush the worst president EVER, when just a week away from election day, it looks like he'll be getting reelected, or at tht every least, losing very narrowly in the electoral college. Boy is that ever an indictment of half of the country.

Anyway as to the Terrible Trio, I'd have to say:

Hoover- Helped screw up the economy pretty bad at the end of his term (obviously many other factors in play but he exacerbated them) and was widely disliked.

Buchanan- As mentioned by someone else, Buchanan basically fiddled while Rome was about to burn.

WH Harrison - He most certainly accomplished less than any other president did.

I'm surprized nobody's commented on the Canadian Prime Minister comment here from Big Bad...but I'll also say, that in the Canadian side, that Diefenbaker was a terrible PM here, since he cancelled the AVRO ARROW project, which could have put Canada on the world map in aeronautics and technology.

For shame, Dief. For shame.

People who are older than I am would probably vote Trudeau, as the worst, since he raised the country's deficit, but in retrospect, some would view him like how America views Clinton: He was a young visionary who shook the country up.

When "Ruthless Reviews" invokes the name of Reagan in a negative light, forgive me for disregarding their opinion.

Reagan led the Western alliance that ended the Cold War. Bitch about Star Wars all you want, but it got the job done in negotiations with the USSR, as any account of that period will tell you. Reagan fixed the ridiculous "stagflation" of the Carter era.

Ruthlessly stupid and partisan review.

Perspective is a good thing.

Clinton, while presiding over a period of relative peace, sowed the seeds of a nuclear PDRK, and sold missile technology to the Chinese. There was a time (before his administration) when neither of these countries could reach the US with their missiles. This is no longer true.

What has Bush done that's so historically terrible? Don't tell me it's starting a war in which 1,000 Americans have died. Because, while each and every one of those lives is incredibly precious, from a historical standpoint, occupying a country and taking only 1,000 casualties is a hell of a military feat. Maybe Kennedy was the worst president ever! What about the Bay of Pigs?

Is it the deficit? We've run up the deficit before, when necessary, and the economy bailed us out. Besides which, 9/11 screwed up our economy, not the nefarious Zionist/neocon Bush Administration.

Is it the tax cuts? Is it all the bipartisan legislation he's passed?

What, exactly, has he done that makes you consider him a candidate for worst president ever?

Iran/contra? AIDS was sent by the Lord to punish? Lower real wage rates? Keynesian military economics? An overstated role in the collapse of the Soviet Union? There are lots of things the Reagan detractors can point to if they don't feel like elevating him to "God-like" status.

Its too early to judge Bush II's presidency. What becomes his War in Iraq will be the determining factor of his Presidency if he gets voted out in November. If he doesn't, who knows what the next 4 years will hold? It'll probably be a good 10-20 years until anyone can really judge Bush's job.

Worst Canadian Prime Minister - Brian Mulroney is pretty high up there for me.

There was no way any of Kennedy's civil rights programs would've ever gotten off the ground in the South if LBJ hadn't enforced them. History shows a very tentative JFK when it came to real action on the issue. LBJ and RFK, though they hated each other, were the real driving force behind those early attempts at reform.

History shows that many of the decisions that supposedly came from Wilson were from his wife, while the very sickly Wilson avoided the public.

C'mon Grimis, FDR bashing is just silly. Extraordinary times called for exrtaordinary measures, and he pulled the country thru. Without his programs then, we wouldn't have nearly the free economy we do now.
