1946. 1967. And now 2004. Different results this time, I hope.

What's the Cardinals rotation going into this?

I'm guessing, from reading elsewhere:

Game 1 - Woody Williams @ Tim Wakefield
Game 2 - Matt Morris @ Curt Schilling
Game 3 - Jeff Suppan vs. Pedro Martinez
Game 4 - Jason Marquis vs. Derek Lowe
Game 5 - Woody Williams vs. Tim Wakefield
Game 6 - Matt Morris @ Curt Schilling
Game 7 - Jeff Suppan @ Pedro Martinez

Game 7: Suppan vs. Martinez.

I guess we got that "Former Red Sox pitcher vs. current Red Sox pitcher" matchup after all. ;-)

Exciting baseball playoffs thus far. Lots of former Expos in the World Series, which is a side story I'm looking at closely.

Who do I want to win? The Red Sox, just because I feel for them in that they are often victims of circumstance. Who WILL win? The Red Sox close the deal in Game 6 at Fenway with the One Footed Cyborg pitching seven strong, Timlin nails down the eighth, and Foulke shuts'm down in the ninth.

And Mike Timlin, unbelievably, wins his THIRD World Series Ring.

I would also have to disagree. For a team with 112 wins, the Cardinals are getting no f'n respect. For a team that will send up Walker, Pujols, Rolen, and Edmonds (in that order no less) they're getting no respect. The Carinals are also better defensively.

The pitching was good enough to beat the Astros and I'd dare to guess that the Red Sox have nobody in the zone that the combination of Beltran and Berman were in.

If the Cardinals weren't playing, sure I'd be rooting for Boston. But, I really think that the Cardinals are better and will win.

I agree. The problem is I DO respect the hell out of the Cardinals. I still want them to lose though :-)

I could argue that Ortiz and maybe now Damon are hotter, but yeah great point. Also the Red Sox "pitching" was good enough to beat the Yankees. Really!

This series comes down to 3 things in my mind.
1)Those shaky starting pitchers. Both teams. If, God and Dr. Watson willing, Curt Shilling will be on. And I mean on. I can't trust any starting pitcher named Woody. I know it's a little childish. But c'mon...I'll get over it.

2)Home field. Well, duh. But I'm talking about St. Louis here. The No DH is going to mess Boston to the point where our "improved defense" will get the test. I love Busch Stadium but it does not beat Fenway..and if it makes it to 6 and 7, I can't see the Sox lose there.

3)Manny F'n Ramirez. Get an RBI. Or two.

Go Sox.

I think the Cards take it. The only thing the Sox have better than the Cards is thier starting pitching. But, so did the Astros. So, maybe the bats of St Louis overcome the pitching of the Sox. Either way, it should be an exciting, close series.

BTW, Standing room only tickets around here are going for $500-$650 if you can find them.

$500-$650 for standing room? That's cheap. Bleachers are over $1500 for Game 1, and the price for Game 7 tickets (if necessary) could be hitting high 4/low 5 figures for obstructed view seats.
Since it's Red Sox/Cardinals, it is a virtual certainty it goes 7, as both teams historically play all 7. I'll take Boston in 7 on an Ortiz walk off home run off the Pesky Pole in the 10th off King.

I'd say any advandtage the Astros had in starting pitching was hurt by they way Clemens and Oswalt were handled in the series against Atlanta. By not having those two available to start the first and last two games of the series hurt them very bad I felt.

One of the strengths of the Cardinals bullpen is how they're managed. If it gets into a 14-12 slugfest...you're going to be able to wear down on some of the arms in that pen that aren't used to being stretched out for more than an inning. Boston has a pretty big advantage here, with having Arroyo available out of the pen, as well as Wakefield (and Lowe) on just about any day that they're not the starting pitcher.

The offenses, however, are pretty evenly matched. The Cards play small-ball better, but I don't see it coming down to that. And if the Red Sox MUST have someone bunt...they should have 'Tek do it. I think he's probably the best bunter on the team.

Good God, that was a sloppy (but exciting) game.

I'm standing by my pick of Boston in seven, just to make it as hard as possible on their fans.

Boston's defense is going to be badly exposed in St Louis. It's bad enough to have the adventures with Manny in left, but Manny in left compounded with Ortiz at first could lead to negative runs. Does Francona replace Ortiz at first if leading by one in the eigth? I would ... maybe. If nothing else it will make Lowe, a ground ball pitcher, a little more hittable in an NL park. The scary thin about the Cards is they can match the Sox big ball all night, but can go small ball and manufacture a run better than any team I've seen in a long time.

Will any final score be less than ten?

If you're going to go out of your way to make an elaborate sign to take to the ballpark, and it's going to get shown on TV a few times, at least get your spelling right. Did everyone else see that big "It's not in the cards" sign? In the bottom left corner, it said "Whose your Pappi?"

Oddly enough, "your" was the only correct word in that phrase.

Catch The Thrill on "Pick of the Week": taped Tuesdays at Planet Magic in Denmark, WI; on the air Sundays @ 1 am on WB-14!

I'm proud to announce that I'm going to Game 4 with my Boston-born roommate (StaggerLee, the tix were a little more expensive than your quoted price, FYI.) We had to do staggered days off so the boss'd let us pull it off: I leave early from work Wed AM, we drive from Green Bay to Busch Stadium, watch the Sox win, and then drive back to GB to get him to work for Thursday 2p CDT.

And after the Cards had the nerve to PERSONALLY INSULT ME {/delusion} by trotting out former Brewers Mike Matheny and Carl "How the F*ck is This Guy Still Drawing a Major League Paycheck" Eldred, I'm thinking of making a sign that sez:

"A BREWERS FAN STILL MAD OVER '82: GO SOX!"

And Manny, Manny, Manny: got a hit, but Good Gravy! Back-to-back errors, and 4 runs score!? Get it together, Ramirez. You don't wanna be the next {insert 1B from '86 whose name shall not be mentioned here}, do ya?

Bottom line: I'm going to the World F'n Series. Go Sox!

At least tell us you tried to wrangle a press pass before you caved in and paid 4 figures plus per ticket. Remember at Fenway for Game 1, it was steak and lobster tails being served in the press box.
And, Manny was actually a defensive genius. He attempted to deke Marquis in order for the bases not to be loaded for Walker, only to have Marquis somehow avoid the tag. And, he dropped Walker's ball so that the bat would be taken out of Pujols' hands in the 8th inning. Either that, or he played defense at a level even below his normal worst depths. I'm still trying to figure out taking Timlin out with Cedeno at the plate in the 8th, as after all the manuevering, Foulke came in with only Myers and Leskanic left in the pen.

The Cards need to walk Ortiz every damned time he gets to the plate!

About Manny's catch. I forgot the situation, but I really don't think he should have tried to slide, especially if there were fewer than two outs. He could have easily caught the ball with and underhand glove, not lost stride, crow-hopped and made a great throw home. There was no reason to try to slide.
It is not how they teach you to do it when you are a younging, but at that level(or even in a good high school) there is no reason not to catch it that way.

But anyway, who is excited to see Pedro at the plate in game 3! Anybody?

That was an exciting game. I just didn't care for the way that the Cardinals pitched. Walks, walks, and more walks. Then lets hit a batter. Woody is a better pitcher than he showed tonight - he was brilliant in game 5 of the NLCS.

I thought that the strike zone changed all day long - Wakefield probably was being squeezed in the 4th, and the called third strike on Edmonds was ridiculously inside.

Here's hoping that Matt Morris finds the form that made him a number 1 starter and future Cy Young winner.

I agree with bubbles; the second error wasn't Manny's fault. In all honesty, I'm just glad that he didn't pull a Theismann or something after his leg got jammed.

Speaking of disgusting injuries that happened (or could happen) on national television, Schilling's pitching tonight. Will we see the blood on his sock again, and what are the odds that the sutures pop and Schilling's tendon goes flying into the third base dugout?

If that happens, I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that Schilling would still stay in the game and find a way to pitch while sitting on top of the mound.

Very sloppy game last night, but enjoyable. It's a shame that negative thoughts are engrained in the heads of all Sox fans. The Cards just wouldn't go away. Every time they came back, I kept thinking of the line from Rounders when Teddy KGB says "Go away. This is no good for you."

If the throwing error isn't Wilson's fault, then who's fault is it? The closest person he was throwing at was Jeter. He missed the base and the area around it by a good 10 feet. It was absolutely his fault.
