They were penalized. If he had just been tagged, Jeter is at second. After the play, Jeter was sent to first.

I generally agreed with the call, but was wondering what rule the umps based the call on. Rodriguez blatently batted Arroyo's arm. Arroyo was in the baseline, or at least part of him was. I always thought that in that sort of play, the runner could go for the ball (which he kinda did, I think, by wheeling his arm at Arroyo's). In the MLB Rules, Chapter 7 (mlb.com) regarding the runner, they dance around the situation, but never address that particular instance, when a runner "goes for the ball."

Like I said, it seemed like the right call. If Boston is winning at any point tonight, and any call goes against the Yanks, I would bet those boys in blue riot gear will be on the field before you can say "assholes in the stands".

Will Mirrabelli be starting tonight with Wake going, or is it "The New Adventures Of Varitek Trying To Catch The Knuckleball"?

This series will not be complete for me until Pedro's little dwarf friend makes an appearance on the field. Whether he's up on Pedro's shoulders, running the bases with the umps in pursuit, or mooning the fans. It would be a perfect fit in this series of bizarre events.

Fasten your seat belts. Sox/Yanks once again in a Game 7.

I got this from ESPN...

Rule 2.00.
Interference:
(a) Offensive interference is an act by the team at-bat which interferes with, obstructs, impedes, hinders or confuses any fielder attempting to make a play. If the umpire declares the batter, batter runner, or a runner out for interference, all other runners shall return to the last base that was in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference, unless otherwise provided by these rules. In the event the batter runner has not reached first base, all runners shall return to the base last occupied at the time of the pitch.

And A-Rod wasn't "Wheeling his arm", that was a definite, intentional slap.

The first question my 4 year old daughter asked me this morning was "Who won Daddy ?" - I was almost sorry to break her heart - her 6 year old sister was happy though - the dunk household is split 2 & 2 on tonight's game

Schilling was tough - Bellhorn got the right call and so did A-Rod......Sox win in extra innings tonight - fans riot inside and outside the stadium - Pedro tells the world that the midget is in actuality "his daddy" - Astros beat the Cards and Clemens comes back to Fenway

Well if the Astros win the NL pennant, Clemens is gonna facr one of his former teams. I'm also wondering whoever wins between Sox/Yanks, will they have enough left for the WS?

Hey, if it's ok for you to ask Democrats to let the 2000 election go, is it fair for me to ask you to let a play from 8 years past go?

Well I'll say this, the Yankees sure know how to collapse in dramatic fashion. I figured this series was going 7, but not this way. As for Schilling, I'll hop on the bandwagon and say it was another gutty postseason performance from him, which is the norm. And as RSN pointed out, aside from one lousy inning, Lieber pitched well.

I think the Yankee pitching order goes something like this tonight: Brown, El Duque, Mussina, Rivera.

I wanted to question (only logically, mind you) what the big difference is between A-Rod slapping Arroyo's glove and a guy annihilating the catcher at home plate. Seems to me if one's legal, the other should be too.

Simmons is SO right, this is JUST LIKE the Pats in 2001. Now we even have a "tuck rule" parallel. If this is the SOS (same ol' Sox), Bellhorn keeps slumping and gets booed through all of 2005 when he even sniffs a slump, Arroyo lets the A-Rod play distract him and throw him off his game, and Tony Clark ABSOLUTELY hits a walk-off dinger to end the game, just to remind Sox fans what crap he was in 2002.

Gotta get home by five tonight.

Count me in on the Sox bandwagon. I was rooting for the Cubs and Sox last year, and am amazed at how the Sox have come back this year. I gotta agree with the sentiment above - I think whoever wins this game loses the first game of the WS due to emotional letdown.

Running into the catcher (or even breaking up a double play with a hard slide) is in the act of moving to a base. You'll notice that an ump will call interference if the slide went way out of the base line or if the slider puts his arms in the way of the throw.

For specifics, look at the Umpire's handbook:
Section 6.1 (Offensive Interference):

While contact may occur between a fielder and runner during a tag attempt, a runner is not allowed to use his hands or arms to commit an obviously malicious or unsportsmanlike act such as...flagrantly using his arms or forearms, etc. to commit an intentional act of interference unrelated to running the bases.

So it's not stated explicitly in the MLB handbook, but it is in the umpire's handbook, which is considerably larger and more detailed.

Robert Fick was find for doing something similar to Eric Karros in game 4 or 5 of last years NLDS. We'll see what happens to WonderBoy.

It's rule 6.1 in the Umpires Handbook. I don't have the time at the moment to look it up, but I can later.

Grimis was right when he said most everyone in the country is a visitor at least to Red Sox Nation. In the spirit of good Sox and Sox relations, I am changing the color of mine from White to Red for tonight, as evidenced by my one day only avatar. This series has been downright awe-inspiring, and Curt Schilling is my hero. I've never looked forward to a baseball game not involving my team this much in my life. Go Red Sox!

No doubt that the winner of this game will be emotionally drained, and need a day or two just to get their mind straight.

Good thing the World Series starts on Saturday, then.

Plus, what we're all forgetting is the NLCS. The Astros and Cardinals can conceivably (and very likely, says I) play tomorrow, meaning that they too will have gone to Game 7 of the LCS, and they too will match staff versus staff, further consequences be damned. Yankees fans AND Red Sox fans (and those kooky fans who root for the American League team no matter who it is) should be rooting for the Cardinals tonight.

Considering I've been to Fenway four more times than I have been to my own teams home stadium (4-0), and the fact that my Dad is a diehard BoSox fan, I agree with everything that you just said. This may be a first in this particular forum.

No. It's the first thing I thought too. I am quite amused by A-Rod feeling that he and the Yankees are being persecuted, however. Him and the fans have done enough to remind me of why I'd cheer Castro's Estrellas Comunistas del Béisbol if they were playing the Yankees.

Which ever team comes out of the ALCS should suffer a hangover. See Game 1 vs. Florida last year for the Yankees. However, if the Astros clinch tonight the ALCS winner might be able to avoid the hangover. Knowing Clemens is on the mound in Game 1 will allow the true Red Sox or Yankee fans not to overly rejoice and maintain the vital hatred necessary to get over a celebraton and get onto the true task. Plus, the AL winner gets the extra day this time between series.
On the subject of the midget, funniest thing was him getting kicked out of Fenway in Game 5 because he was charging people 10 bucks a pop to have their pictures taken with him in the box seats during the game.
In a warped way, having the White Sox and Cubs fans jump on the bandwagon is a good thing, as they (and maybe Indians fans as well) are the only people who are as paranoid as Red Sox fans. This must be like the 4th of July and New Years Eve for liquor stores.
I wasn't alive in '67 and most Red Sox fans here weren't either, but I think they know the story: If the Red Sox win tonight, will the people who show up at the airport and line the roadway in the middle of the night to greet them upon their return surpass the mythical reception the '67 team received when they returned from the famous West Coast trip that started the ball rolling on the Impossible Dream? And, if Ortiz pulls another Yaz '67 out of his bag of tricks, will the Ned Martin 'If you are just tuning in, they've done it again' line come out of retirement?
