I always will welcome an Alec Baldwin cameo ... he is truly underrated in his stabs at comedy ...

The rest of the show, meh ... I'll agree that the Carville/Kerrys/Clinton bit was pretty good, but that's about where it stopped ...

"What has Amy Pohler EVER done on the show that was funny?"

Pretty much everything ever, all the time, for reals. Particularly, RICK RICK RICK RICK.

"To assert she is the funniest ever is so blatantly ignorant to the history of the show, perhaps you shouldnt be making statements at all."

It is a subject of great gravitas, after all. I would've been more specific if I knew that you and the Great American Bash would've been so appalled. She is the funniest woman on the show since I started watching it, and her only competition would be the same three girls who are on now too. She's also been the funniest person on the show since Will Ferrell left.

"Names like Gilda fucking Radner, Jane Curtain, Mary Gross (she was underappreciated in the Murphy/Piscapo era) Julia Louis Dreyfus,"

In post #2, I cut the timeframe to the second half of the show's amazing history, so I'll take your word for it. (With great reservation, 'cause if you don't like Amy P then how cool can you be, my man).

"Victoria Jackson"

Definitely not in Amy's league (I M O!). So are you mentioning nobody else from the last 15 years? If so, I guess I'm still totally right and may continue making statements.

chill: "Fred Armison and Keenan (sp?) Thompson are the two best unknown players on the cast."

I hate Fred Armisen but Keenan was superb last year.

Comedy is so subjective. I can't understand why anyone thinks Ellen has every said or done anything funny in her life but she's a big talent to a lot of people.

So stating that Amy is the funniest can't really be wrong or ignorant then, can it?

Shit, Chris Rock SUCKED donkey balls on SNL and is probably one of the funniest men ever and in the Top 5 of my greatest stand-ups ever.

Watching SNL the past couple years makes me yearn for a 30 minute Darrell Hammond sketch show where he can do all his impressions and then I'll have zero reason to ever watch SNL again.

I liked Cheri O'Teri, she was always good on the Morning Latte skits and her Barbara Walters was funny. And I liked the Cheerleaders, so sue me. But it's funny to see knocks on the recent SNL women because a few years ago it was like you couldn't turn around without seeing an article about how Cheri, Molly Shannon, and Ana Gastyer were the best troop of females on the show since the 3 in the first season. I never did like Molly though.

This is probably the first era of SNL where you could definitely state that the female cast members were carrying the show. Rachel, Maya, Amy and Tina are the "stars" of the current cast, and frankly are funnier than any of the men save for Will Forte.

Rumour has it that Lorne doesn't like doing total cast overhauls (like in 1985, 1986 and 1995) just because of the extra care it takes to break in a bunch of newbies, which is why over the last decade we've been the trend develop where 1-2 people leave every year and we get 1-2 new cast members. Also, a total cast revamp is sort of an unspoken admission that the last few years haven't been up to par. Michaels has freely admitted that past cast shake-ups have been due to a lack of quality, but recent interviews seem to indicate that he's satisfied with SNL's current level.

OKay Shapiro, I will retract my statement. ALthough Dratch is ten times funnier than Pohler ever thought of being, IMO. I guess I took too many drama classes with too many "I AM GOING TO BE A STAR" type people, and that is all she reminds me of. Never once laughed at anything she does. The only sketches that she is involved in that I like are when she plays Sharon Osbourne, and thats just because we get to see Horatio come out and mock Ozzy.

Oh, and dont knock Victoria, she was good in her day.
As was the WAY underrated Robin Duke.

BTW, I missed 90% of the show, did Affleck and Armison bring back DONNY G AND SIDECAR? That was brilliant the first time around.

Poehler's work on UCB acquits her of the god awfulness that has been the last four to five years of SNL.

Poehler seemed a lot more improved and more comfortable this week behind the WU desk.

Agreed. And Tina's final joke was killer.

I don't think she's right for it still, but I agree she was better. It also didn't hurt that she had better jokes. The depression bit was good. This was was a mild improvement but still not too great. Finesse Mitchell's bit during update was terrible. The Prince sketch was again rather unfunny except Amy~ did a perfect Sharon Stone and Armisen's Prince is really GOOD if not actually, you know, funny, really.

I was wondering why Amy was playing Sharon Stone as Anne Heche, personally. Then again, I enjoyed the sketch mostly to check out Maya Rudolph in skimpy clothing. =)

Will Forte's "Dubya" sucks. He doesn't look the part, and he's not good at doing it. Parnell might've been a better choice. Seth Myers' Kerry isn't much better. The debate bits have been missing the funny for me.

Darrell Hammond is WOEFULLY underused thus far.

I'm in agreement with Big Bad, Tina's final WU joke had me rolling. Rachel Dratch's bit as Martha Stewart was also pretty good, even if she was aping Gasteyer more than Martha.

Seems like I've been enjoying the new season more than anyone else, although with the focus (FINALLY) back on politics, that really shouldn't suprise anyone.

Chris Parnell did Bush once last season and it BOMBED. Seriously, I thought he'd have been the best choice to take over the role, but he just didn't cut it. (Will Forte's been the best of the people attempting to take over the role, although I'd have just persuaded Will Ferrel to come in and do it for the debate sketches and the obligatory "cleaning out the Oval Office" sketch in January. Oh, it's damn true.)

Personally, I think both Presidential debate sketches have been spot-on and the highlights of the season. Every time Forte leapt out of the chair had me rolling. (The Veep debate wasn't as good, but I did love the line about "any weird-ass rules I might make up".) They were very much parodying what happened more than Bush and Kerry themselves, so if you didn't actually watch the debates, I could understand not enjoying the parodies.

Amy Poehler's okay in the Update role. I wouldn't have picked her myself, but she was much better week 2 than week 1, and if she keeps improving at this rate, she'll be just fine. I never thought The Most Annoying Man On Earth was that good in the part either, for what it's worth. I'd much rather see Tina Fey by herself. *SHE* has surpassed Norm McDonald, Dennis Miller and the woefully underrated Kevin Nealon as the best Weekend Update anchor of "my" generation. (Amy Poehler has already surpassed Colin Quinn, as would a mildly engaging rock.)

Oh, and I thought the Ex-X-Presidents was the best TV Funhouse since the Jesus returns/kicks Pat Robertson in the ass one they ran before Christmas a few years back.

Agree agree agree. I thought I was the only one who felt Kevin Nealon was VERY underrated. I would actually go out on the limb and say that I think Nealon was the *best* of my generation...although Tina is getting close.

I never got into McDonald, and although he was good, i couldn't buy Miller as a newscaster when he was sporting that horrible mullett. Nealon seemed to nail the true newscaster approach/style, and ignoring the occassional flubbed line, I think he was great. I just preferred his more "dry" approach, I suppose.

Like most everyone else, I hope, I too am astounded that Colin Quinn was the WU host that long. I'm astounded he was at all. Spectacularly poor.

Finally, I'm really digging Armisen and as a 24 year-old former Nickelodeon fan, I'm pulling for Keenan Thompson. Finesse as well, to a lesser extent. They're seldom used, but in a way that's better for me. At least they won't be shoved down my throat unlike The Most Annoying Man On Earth.

Now if they can just lose Horatio Sanz things would get a lot better.

The debate parodies are hardly parodies. They're more like re-enactments of what actually happened. And then they recite almost word-for-word lines from the debate, repeating certain ones over and over because the writers think that repetition is funny.

Seth's Kerry is very lame so far. He's trying too hard to do an accurate impersonation of Kerry. What I've found has worked best over the years is when the players take a character (like Ferrell with Dubya, or Carvey with George Sr.), focus on a few character traits, and then overblow those traits to the point where their portrayals are nowhere close to the real thing... and humor wins out over accuracy. Carvey had the voice of Senior down pretty good, but the cartoony impersonations are what work. Carvey's Bush was a little hyper and crazy - nothing close to the real thing. Ferrell's Bush was very stiff and always squinting -- ALWAYS!

The ones we're seeing right now just plain suck. If I wanted to see the debate all over again, I'd have taped it. Actually, the debate itself had just as many funny parts as the SNL version. That's my opinion anyway, but what does that say about the writing? Lazy?? I vote yes.

"I would actually go out on the limb and say that I think Nealon was the *best* of my generation."

That's a very big limb you're going out on.
See how subjective comedy is??
I thought Nealon was HORRIBLE. We're talking crickets chirping when he told the jokes/headlines. Whenever I watched it with others, they'd say "This guy sucks". Watch the tapes--the studio audience didn't laugh either. I'll take Miller, McDonald, and yes, Quinn anytime over him.

I agree about the debate sketches. Is copying line for line the actual words a parody???
I love watching W. get all worked up over the "timber company" flub. He is so proud of himself when he thinks he's being funny.

Carvey's Bush v1 didn't really hit its stride as a character (as opposed to just an impression) until about a month or so after Bush v1 was inaugurated. Otherwise, all he was doing was a charaicature of a prep wuss who repeated himself a lot, but if you go back it doesn't really resemble the isms/traits that we associate with the SNL Bush. The truth is at the time of the debates in 1988 Carvey's Bush was being lapped by Jon Lovitz's Dukakis.

The 10/23 SNL was much better. Jude Law is amazing good at character acting in sketches. I enjoyed so much of this show, I won't go into details at this time.

Anybody watch long enough to see Ashlee Simpson's second performance? Haha, not that it lasted long. They accidently played (on a cd, I'm guessing) the song that she "sang" the first time around. It was then very obvious the whole thing was lip-synched and air-guitared. The intended song quickly started up, but then Ashlee missed the cue and her singing was heard. Meanwhile, she was standing there like a deer in headlights...then quickly walked off stage. The rest of the band kept "playing" and then about 10 seconds later, the show went to commercial. Here's hoping the mainstream media makes a little something of this. Sure, we all expect them to lip-synch, but Simpson's reaction made it seem like it was always intended for us to believe it's actually her singing. I had to laugh. So far, the show's been funny - even in places you wouldn't expect.

Vote for John Kerry.
It's the only way to save America from Will Forte's Bush impression.
