Rodney Dangerfield died today (reuters.com) at age 82.

When he looks down on us all, hopefully he'll see that he had our respect the entire time.

RIP Mr. Dangerfield, truly a legend of comedy

One of my all-time faves ... he helped a lot of comics make it to where they are today ... may he rest in peace. Thanks, Rodney ...

Man, what a legacy he leaves behind! A True comic genius, who according to every account of people meeting him I have ever heard, was a class man, and very gracious.

RIP Rodney!

Jeez, that's weird: just today the Philadelphia Daily News ran a back-cover photo of Larry Bowa with Dangerfield's face Photoshopped in place of his own (with, of course, the predictable "don't get no respect" headline). Makes you think: how many comedians get their jokes turned into that sort of universal cultural touchstone?

When he went into heart sugery he said, "If I don't make it I'll be in there 20 minutes." "Two hours if all goes well."

That tells you the sence of humor he had. I will miss him because I always enjoyed his work and I always got to make fun of my English teacher for having his last name even though she had no relation.

Wow. Truly sad. He was a great comic, with awesome timing. His appearance on the Simpsons was one of my favorite episodes. I still check out his movies on Comedy Central sometimes.

RIP Rodney.

Well, a legend has left us. Among Dangerfield's more formidable achievements...

-70 appearances on the Tonight Show
-16 appearances on Ed Sullivan
-Introduced Jim Carrey, Tim Allen, Jerry Seinfeld and others to TV audiences via his HBO shows
-Memorable appearances in Caddyshack, Back to School, Ladybugs, Meet Wally Sparks, Rover Dangerfield and Little Nicky
-And of course, the benchmark of late 20th century celebrity...a guest spot on The Simpsons [1996's "Burns Baby Burns"]

That, and:

1. He's the only reason why I don't mind hearing Journey's "Any Way You Want It."

2. In Back to School his character paid Kurt Vonnegut (not some actor playing him) to write an essay on Kurt Vonnegut. The professor's reaction? "You obviously don't know anything about Vonnegut." Practically defined my college experience in literature classes.

There hasn't been a round of golf that I have played since CADDYSHACK came out that someone in the foursome hasn't quoted Rodney. He will be missed.

Here's hoping that HBO busts out all (or most of) his movies and specials in a huge marathon soon. Rodney helped make HBO worth paying for back in the day every bit as much as Beastmaster did.

Legend gets thrown around a lot, but this man was truly a LEGEND in his field, and pretty good branching out into others (acting).

I remember listening to a tape of him live and the funniest part was when he just started ripping on hecklers. He was brutal.

Hopefully Kinnison was there to greet him. Kauffman too.

The most enduring memory I have of Rodney Dangerfield was listening to him, circa 1995, tell us that he still didn't get any respect after the Motion Picture Academy told him he wasn't a good enough actor to be allowed to join their august group. Sometimes, you just have to live the gimmick, and sometimes, the gimmick lives you.

RIP Rodney, I bet you're getting some respect now.

I just discovered and fell hard for Party Down. I wolfed down the first season and the eight episodes of the second season over the last few days. The show really spoke to me in a lot of ways.
