"We feel that in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, and the ensuing events around the world, it is inappropriate to use the term 'war' to describe intercollegiate athletics events," Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins said Monday. "We need to be more sensitive to the men and women who defend our country for real."

The schools have competed in sports for more than a century.

"Our rivalry with Kansas is a very important thing to many people, but it certainly pales in comparison with what is taking place overseas, and this is the right thing to do," Missouri athletic director Mike Alden said.

Unlike other college rivalries referred to as wars, the Missouri-Kansas competition actually traces its roots to armed conflict. In the 1860s, tensions between Missouri, a slave state, and Kansas, a free state, led to bloody clashes along the border.

In the most celebrated confrontation, Confederate sympathizers led by William Quantrill sacked Lawrence and burned most of the town to the ground.

News accounts from earliest football games between the schools recount fights breaking out in the crowd between descendants of Union and Confederate soldiers.
Does anybody other than liberal college administrators think soldiers are offended by this? Especially considering that this rivalry has lasted through six other major wars?!?

Why does it have to be "liberal" college administrators?

Colorado's administration doesn't seem very liberal to me. The jackasses.

The administration at Florida International always struck me as where the escaped German officers ended up. Put it this way: every time student publications spit out anything it was a struggle of Dufresne-Warden Norton proportions.

Get busy graduating, or get busy dying.

[sidenote and getting back on-topic] Missouri alum Kellen Winslow Sr. had no comment.

Well, this way we won't have to talk about the Tigers blowing up here in Missouri, as they lose another big game.

Or shooting themselves in the foot.

Or how their defense got blown away.

We want to avoid all this kind of talk, and simply get to the hanging our heads after another Missouri team underperforms.

Go team pride! The Cubs did this to me, btw.

In Basketball, it definitely is a border war. In football, it is more like Lichtenstein battling Luxembourg.

Does this mean the Texas/Oklahoma "Red River Shootout" will now be called the "Indigenous People's Waterway Competition?"

The Red River is the name of the river; so named because the clay/dirt makes the river (which serves as the border between OK and TX), well...red. This has nothing to do with indigenous persons.

Oh, and Texas is going to poleaxe Oklahoma. Just wanted to state it for the record.
