Too many times laying off that pitch. Shoulda swung for the fences when we had the chance. Twice the victims of strikes, it's too late to do anything now. 1981 (the year I was born) and 1994.

1981, not much else to say but the Dodgers won the series. Did the prolonged stoppage effect the team? Maybe....but who knows in hindsight? We lost to the better team, although a part of me thinks if the season progressed naturally with no stoppage we may have won. Strike One.

And then 1994. I still remember that run. And although I continued to play the game, I stopped watching MLB afterwards. For seven years I had nothing to do with MLB. My team's only shot....ruined by a bunch of rich twits who didn't realize that they killed my team. Several years later, SI runs an article saying "the team that saved baseball". Refering to of course, the Minnisota Twins. What gets lost in all of this is the simple fact if they saved the season in 1994, baseball wouldn't have needed to be saved....and Alou the Greater, Pedro, Hill (when he was good), One of the Greatest Outfields Ever (Larry, Marq, and Alou the Lesser) and coming up soon....the Incomprable VLAD....they all would've been drinking the wine that WINNERS drink when they win titles. That team was the class of the league....they would've been an inspriation for smaller markets. A model for how to build a team. Enough support for a new staduim would've been had....but no, we can't do that. We need a strike. A strike that destroyed the Best Team in Baseball. Strike Two.

We had a glimer of hope soon though. A plan was made in some fancy hotel. A plan to make an open air stadium in a pretty piece of Montreal. But then Strike Three happened.

The Betrayal.

As a result of Loria's betrayal, MLB took control of us. And when we went on one more miracle ride, when Vlad, Vidro, and Wilks were laying down the law....we had to cut salary. Again. The owners said so. THe ownsers of the Expos. We were owned by our COMPATITION. No, that's not conflict of interest at all, right? We would've made it too, if it wasn't for our "homestand" in Purto Rico.

May a plague rest on the house of Loria and ANY professional sports team in Flordia. I don't care if it's the Bucs, Panthers, Lightning, U of Miami, the Dolphins, but MOST ESPECIALLY the Marlins. No championships. Ever. For the betrayal of Loria I hope none of ya's win anything, not even the door prize at a single's dance.

Am I bitter? Yes. Sad? Yes. Angry? Yes. The question is now....who do I cheer for? I dunno. What I do know is my memories of MY TEAM will live on. And they are, and always will be, MY team. Who is this team?

FWIW, I feel your pain when talking about teams sabotaged by the 1994 strike. I've still not seen a better team on either side of Chicago as good as the 1994 White Sox. And of course OUR owner decided to ass it up for everyone. I love my Sox, and I go to a lot of games because it's in my blood, but I'll always carry a scar from that event.

That said, I really wish they would have contracted the damn Twins ;)

El Nastio put it better than anyone else could. I didn't think I'd be as sad I am today. 1981 and especially 1994 are very strong bitter memories. I remember the absolute coolness when interleague play started and seeing an Expos-Jays game at SkyDome.

Adieu, les Expos.

I'm not trying to oversell this, but I honestly feel like I've just lost a part of my childhood. We were ALL Expos fans as kids...we wanted to be Carter, Dawson, Raines, Cromartie.

We packed Bedford Place Mall when Carter came to sign autographs.

We begged our parents to take us to Montreal so we could see a game in the summer.

We wore #29 and played third cause Tim Wallach did. Well, at least *I* did...

We mailed our baseball cards to get signed...and always got them back, signed. We had them in these ornate binders with clear plastic covers...little black and white head shots the players would send back to us. I'm sure the front office knew firsthand the handwriting of every kid in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia.

Thanks.

I had no idea the Expos had these kinds of fans. It's interesting to read. Thanks guys.

The 94 team was amazing. I remember them well, because it was my second year with Phillies season tickets, coming off of a World Series year. We all thought them unstoppable, probably the block to any chances of a repeat pennant, and then every time we saw them after that year the greats were leaving the team, and they were becoming more and more of a joke. Of course, so were the Phillies, so I just figured it was a cyclical thing, but I was wrong. It stinks that it had to come to this, but if you look at who is running baseball, it's not a gigantic surprise.

But I did see the game, and it was a mess. One of my big pet peeves are rowdy fans (throwing stuff, disrespecting anthems etc)& here is no different (even though most Florida papers ie Palm Beach post (palmbeachpost.com) seem to forget to mention a lot of the fans started cheering to overtake the boos of the US anthem)... But I can really understand their frustration, Jeffrey Loria and MLB really screwed over the franchise. I have no idea how an a commissioner can allow an owner drop one team and jump for another team immediately. Legal or not, I know what's right and wrong, and that just stunk.

Of course, in a real sick and twisted irony, we have Loria's Marlins close out The Expos. I heard someone in the Marlins coaching staff (I think it was McKeon) on one Canadian sports news before the game says he's glad to see it go because there's no one here... Gawd I wanted to tell him, listen you A-hole, first off your owner put the final nail in this franchise coffin and two, before you start questioning other cities fan base. Why don't you look at Marlines 2002 Average attendance of 10,038 (baseball-almanac.com) and that was just a year before winning the 03 world Series (which that year they had a veeeery impressive AVG of 16,290) and already having the 97 Series under their belt. In 1994 Montreal was averaging 22,390.

I know Montreal gets a bad rep, really with the expception of maybe a handful of major baseball traditional cities. I really don't know many of the remaining 20 somewhat cities fan base wouldn't have given up on the franchise after crooked owners and lying baseball commissioners who treat them like an unwanted step-child.

June, probably around '89. which would have made me... 11. Visiting Charlie and Betty Ketcham, parents of a family friend. Essex Junction Vermont. I learn how to play Old Maid. We see (in writing) the assertion that Mrs. Ketcham cheats at Scrabble.
Steve Ketcham and my family take a daytrip to Montreal. The Botanical Gardens are thrilling to nature lovers Steve and my Dad. I get dehydrated, realize I hate Perrier, and look forward to the night game.

It was a meaningless Expos-Cardinals game. I didn't even follow the NL. But it was the first game I'd been to that wasn't at Fenway. I had some crappy pizza, bought an inflatable bat and cheered like an insane kid for Galaragga. Montreal won it in the 9th with an exciting baserunning play. I got to see Ozzie Smith play. My parents still got along then. Neither of my brothers were awful and there was Youppi. Come on, I was 11, that thing was made for me.

Thanks for that one game. Certainly there were more just like it for other 11 year olds. But that one was mine..

I'm glad I'm not alone with this. Makes me feel better cooping.

spf, that would've been a bloody good series. The White Sox had a KILLER pitching staff in '94. Would've been a good match up against our offense. A part of me would've liked Yankees vs Expos just for the big guy vs little guys thing, but for pure baseball goodness, White Sox vs Expos would've been checkmate.

Goon, I agree that was a cool moment when it was Jays vs 'Spos. At the time the Jays were respectable too. Made things interesting with the thought that an All-Canadian World Series could've been a year or two away. And thanks for posting the picture of the Youpster.

Roy, the Expos have always had fans like us....the rest of them left due to jaded cynicism and constant screwjobs. Those left behind supported this team through thick and thin (and were the regulars at the Big O), and even though they'll be gone, we'll still remember them.

Bullitt, we share many things in common, and this is definitly one. Guess we need a new team, eh? Mad props for posting up the Wallach card. MINT.

As for the actions of the crowd during the game, what else do you expect? It's MONTREAL. Montreal's antics during sporting events is stuff that legends are made of. From booing anthems (a regular occurance) to starting riots (The Richard Riot, for example), they've done pretty much anything and everything. Montreal is probably on the same level as Ney York and Philly. Even with professional wrestling, you notice how Montreal crowds react to so many things differently? Crazy.

Some people around here in Ottawa are laughing at me. others know exactly how I feel. Football fans around here do....but they're lucky, they got a team back. And the funny thing is now I can't even ease the pain watching my Habs. The Als are doing great as always.....but it's not the same. As a kid growing up, it was all about Denis, Walker (a Canadian boy, at that), Wallach, The Cat, et al. The little guys who always fought to the end. And now they're gone. With nothing to replace them.

Now, I don't drink alcohol. That said, after the final game at Shea....I'm raising a glass of Ginger-Ale. A toast. To the Best Team in 1994.

NHS: As a Marlins fan, I was wondering what it was "specifically" that Loria did to kill off the Expos franchise? Because he's been a great owner for us.

And re: attendance remark: I agree. Being a Marlins fan living in NY is tough, but when I see last year in September in the middle of the wild-card race that they're drawing 11,000; that sucks. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't be mad if they moved. Until they get out of that stadium deal and get their own (which no one is Florida seems to support as far as leaders go), they'll always have a low payroll, and will draw few fans. I just can't understand how a state you would think could support baseball, doesn't appear to want to.

Sometime around 1989 or 1990, I got a baseball card in a cereal box. This baseball card was Gary Carter of the New York Mets. I showed it to my Dad and he told me that Gary Carter was a good player for the Mets, but that he had started his career with Montreal.

Fast forward to 1992, when all of Canada could tell it was the Blue Jays' year. This was the first year that I followed baseball closely but instead of jumping on the Blue Jays bandwagon I found myself drawn to the Expos. The reason why was that they had picked up a catcher in the twilight of his career, one Gary Carter. I remember franticly checking the scores every morning, hoping that the Expos had won and the Pirates had lost. (Hey, remember when the Pirates were GOOD?) Montreal finished second in the NL east that year. And again the year after.

I remember on August 11th or 12th of 1994, the last day of baseball before the strike, TSN showed an Expos game and they showed what the standings would be like if MLB hadn't done a divisional re-alignment that year. Under the old NL east The Expos would have an 18 game lead over the likes of the Mets, Phillies, Pirates, Cubs, Cardinals, and Marlins.

I remember how disappointed I was when John Wetteland, Ken Hill, and Marquis Grissom were traded on the same day, and the only name I recognized coming back was Roberto Kelly.

I really thought they'd make the playoffs in 1996 but they didn't and I couldn't understand why Moises Alou would want to leave.

I'll still wear my Expos hats and I'll follow the team to Washington. I hope they get a cool name and they keep the blue, white and red colours. I've cheered for this team for 13 full seasons and I'm not going to stop now

But it will certainly be different. RIP Expos.

There's a lawsuit against Laria and MLB from the minority owners... Here's a clipping of why.

May 2004
The arbitration hearings begin today(May 18) in the fraud case against Jeffrey Loria and Major League Baseball. The hearings center on the lawsuit filed under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act lawsuit filed by 14 former minority partners in the Montreal Expos. The partners claim that Loria, who owned the Expos from 1999 to 2002, hoped to sabotage the team's operations in the hopes of getting the team to move elsewhere:

The minority partners, who now own about 6 percent of the Marlins, filed a lawsuit and arbitration case in July 2002, claiming Loria undermined operation of the Expos so they could be moved or folded. The case seeks millions of dollars in damages and also names Marlins President David Samson and two companies run by Loria.

"The claim is that Jeffrey Loria and David Samson never intended to keep the team in Montreal," said Jeffrey Kessler, a Dewey Ballantine attorney representing the Canadian partners. "From the very beginning, they intended to destroy the plans in place to build a new stadium, sell bonds, bring in investors and make the team viable in Montreal because they wanted to own a team somewhere in the U.S."

Any findings made by the three-member arbitration panel are binding and will likely influence the outcome of the RICO trial. The hearings are supposed to last several months and will feature the testimony of over thirty witnesses. Unlike a trial, though, arbitration proceedings are held in camera, meaning that little, if anything, will be made public, including the reasoning behind the decision.

(Another Sourse) Washington Times - Sep 30/04
A group of limited partners of the Expos are suing Mr. Selig and the team's former managing partner, Jeffrey Loria. They accused Mr. Selig and Mr. Loria of conspiring to kill the Expos' economic prospects in Montreal and dilute their equity in the team. Should the partners prevail in an arbitration decision expected next month, they plan to seek an injunction that blocks the team's move from Montreal.
