Wow. That was brutal. I don't know if it was a result of a serious deterioration of skills, a lack of will, heart, and interest, or simply a good game plan on the part of Johnson. Roy likes to fight from the outside, but also doesn't really have a jab he can use to keep opponents on the outside. Johnson exploited this. Maybe this was the how to beat Roy all along.

Probably not. This has got to be a horrid blow to Roy's pride though. Even after the second Carver fight he kind of still hemmed and hawed and hedged, even while proclaiming "no excuses." I want to see him try explain getting beat up for 8 rounds, and then getting brutally knocked the f*** out to the point where he couldn't get off the mat by the end of the telecast, by a 9-loss fighter.

I think Roy's in denial about how much desire he actually has to keep fighting. The pre-fight interview would have led you to believe Johnson was going to get killed, but once the fight started it was a rerun of Roy's last three fights, with Roy on the ropes, smothering punches and not putting much offense out there. Maybe going up to heavyweight and coming back down to 175 was too much for his body to take and keep his super-sharp reflexes in tact?

Seeing De La Hoya get beat then Jones get KOed has been kind of surreal. I hope Trinidad's taking note.

(And what's with HBO not having a fight on 10/9 so they can show the Trinidad-Mayorga replay? You mean I might actually have to ORDER it? Looking at the (shitty) undercard, I'm not so sure I'll be doing that. Plus Showtime has Jeff Lacy fighting for a title, Kassim Ouma defending his title, and Wladimir Klitschko (aka "Steelhammer", aka "Glassjaw", aka "Oh SNAP where'd my HBO contract go") vs. DaVarryl Williamson (aka "Joe Mesi KOed me in one") in the main event that same night.)

Maybe they think ther're losing too much money from folks like us by having that replay - althoguh there's no way I'm going to throw down 50 bucks for it, and might get pissed enough to cancel my HBO if they don't show it sometime.

I love the quote after the fight: "I'm not the greatest, I'm just the guy who's willing to fight the greatest". I was very surprised that Johnson won the fight. Jones Jr. looks awful lately (the "EA Sports Fight Night" cover jinx?). Did he wind up going to the hospital? I know at the end of the fight he was pretty adamant about not going, but, for his health, I hope he went.

I lucked into the Jones fight last night when I happened to be in the city at my parents' place and TSN showed it live.

Jones looked alright to me in the first couple of rounds; I thought he was just weathering the storm and was going to start striking in the middle rounds. The round before he was knocked out he even winked at someone in the crowd while he was on the ropes as if to say, "You just wait, this guy can't hurt me, but I'm about to start hurting him."

But it just didn't happen. By the time he was knocked out he was so far behind and throwing so few punches that there just didn't seem to be any way he was going to win.

I have to hand it to Johnson, too, he came in with a game plan, executed it, and took his shot when it came. And then in the post-fight interview he was as gracious as I've ever seen a fighter in victory.

Roy Jones either needs to use this as the motivational factor that the knockout loss to Tarver (and even the controversial decision over Tarver) should have been, or he needs to get the hell out of the game. And as much as I hate to say it, I'm leaning towards the latter (although the former would certainly be welcome).

That one flash in the second or third round, where we saw the Roy Jones of old was the only electricity I've seen from him in two years. I like the guy a lot, I think he's probably one of the best fighters I have ever had the privilege to follow, but man, is the writing ever on the wall.

I turned on HBO just in time to see the replay of the replay of Jones getting Knocked the F Out. It's like 15 minutes later, and he's still sitting in the ring. Does anybody know if he ever made it to the hospital?

From ESPN:

Jones, 35, finally walked out of the ring with help from his trainers. Jones left the arena in an ambulance and was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis for a checkup. He walked to the ambulance without comment.

In a warped way, getting knocked out twice might make Jones a boatload of money. Considering he now is vulnerable, perhaps he and Tyson will agree to fight in a mega-payday for both. Although both are shot, the name value would lead to an extremely large PPV buyrate.

I think that's been the case in one form or another since that time he played in a semi-pro basketball game the same day he had a fight.

If you think about it, this is more like three losses in a row for Jones, given that the victory over Tarver was seriously questioned by boxing pundits and fans everywhere. I saw that fight... Jones did not deserve the decision.

Having said that, Jones is still a pretty young 35. He's certainly not punchy. If he can just get his shit back together, I've got to think he's still got the juice to be a top fighter again, maybe even the best in the world. But he has to realize he can't sleepwalk to a victory anymore. He has to get dirty, get mad, get vicious.

Of course, maybe he doesn't want that. Jones' fabled pride springs from talent, skill, and the belief that he's technically better than other fighters. It's not the kind of pride that, say, a Mike Tyson has, which is a pride in his own ability to beat the ever living shit out of anyone, a pride in his own anger and hatred. Maybe if Jones could get angry for a fight, he could still do it.

If not... move over. I like Hopkins, Tarver, Gatti, Barrera, hell, I even like the Klitschkos (and look forward to Wladamir's fight, believe it or not). Jones gave us 15 great years. If he can't give us 16, get outta the game. Maybe he and De le Hoya can open a night club together or something.

Glen Johnson reminded me a lot of former LH champ MARVIN Johnson in that fight.

The 175-pound division has been a has-been group for quite a while....a Tarver-Johnson fight could be quite entertaining.

With Lennox Lewis retired, Jones and de la Hoya with few options in front of them, and Hopkins having nothing left to accomplish, there doesn't seem to be much to look forward to still out there. I wonder how much money it will take to get the Klitschko's in the ring against each other.

You're just not looking hard enough, like the WWE fan who would dismiss the state of all wrestling right now. Note these upcoming fights...

October 2: Trinidad vs. Mayorga on HBO PPV OR Showtime's W. Klitschko/Williamson, Lacy/Vanderpool card
November 6: Tszyu vs. Mitchell on Showtime with Johnny Tapia on the undercard
November 13: Byrd vs. McCline on HBO PPV with *cover eyes* Ruiz/Golota, Rahman/Meehan, and Holyfield (!) vs. Larry Donald
November 20: Wright vs. Mosley II on HBO
November 27: Barrera vs. Morales III
December 11: V. Klitschko vs. Danny Williams on HBO PPV
December 18: James Toney vs. TBA on HBO

I wonder how much money it will take to get the Klitschko's in the ring against each other.

1. They've said they'll NEVER fight.
2. What would be the appeal, since Vitali would be a HUGE favorite?

Admittedly, I'm not a huge boxing fan. I know many of those names you listed, not all of them, and none of them has that big fight appeal that it usually takes to get me interested in the sport. I made a point of seeing Hopkins/Oscar, but none of those fights hold that level of appeal for me. Perhaps I'm not looking hard enough, but I was referring to "(not) much to look forward to" in that there doesn't look to be any of those 'round up all your buddies and go to the bar' calibre fights on the horizon.

As far as the Klitschko's, I've heard them interviewed, I've heard them say they'll never fight one another. Which, in boxing, generally means it won't happen until the money is right. If I'm not mistaken, Roy Jones said a few years back that he had no interest in moving up to the heavyweight division. Suddenly, a weak heavyweight division coinciding with a lack of big name opposition in his own weight class sees Jones win a share of the title from John Ruiz, in the heavyweight division he supposedly wanted no part of.

And would Vitali really be a huge favourite? Against another fighter of equal ability as Wlad, sure. But get a brother vs. brother fight for the heavyweight title and there'd be all sorts of subplots and speculation (How well does Wlad know his brother's style? Will Vitali go after his brother as hard as he would another guy?) about how things would work out. Would Vitali win? Probably. But tell me that fight wouldn't be a lot more intriguing than seeing John Ruiz vs. Andrew Golota in a fight that only the most devoted of fans would care about.

As a pretty big fight fan myself, I must say that a Klitschko vs. Klitschko war for the title would make for an excellent story.

Note from Eddie Famous: I edited this down because it tripped mightily into pro-wrestling-style fantasy booking/storylines. I imagine style matchups and such would be fine, but we should probably keep from submitting "angles"...

175, and especially 200 are always light divisions. The reason's simple - there's heavyweight money and non-heavyweight money. Cruiserweight down to Lightweight are basically similar draws, and all things being equal, earn similar paychecks. It's only when you hit Heavyweight that the division itself becomes a draw, and all things being equal, a heavy is going to make a lot more dough.

Guy's who's natural weight is at 175-200 are going to do one of two things - either try to cut weight so they can be more competitive in a lighter division, (what most all lighter weight boxers do), or more likely, beef up and move up to heavyweight to make more dough. The two-sided draw out of these divisions leaves it weak - usually only inhabited by former middleweights who can't or dont want to cut the weight anymore.

Well, the 175-pound division didn't always suck, I go back to the days of Saad Muhammad, Mustafa Muhammad, Tony Mundine, John Conteh, Bunny Johnson, Vonzell Johnson, Yaqui Lopez, Jesse Burnett, Marvin Johnson, Mike Rossman, Mike Quarry, etc.

Those guys could put on some shows.

Eddie: I don't quite understand the edit. Toney and Jones have both said on numerous occasions they'd like to fight the Klitschkos. Perfect comeback bouts for Wlad, assuming he beats Touch of Sleep. As for jealousy between brothers, I was merely stating that seems the only way the two would actually fight each other, since they don't exactly need the money, and love each other to death. Anyone who knows anything about the Klitschko's knows that.
