Ok, so technically it's the second week of college football but it really began this week with some big games.

#1 and #2 USC and Oklahoma cruise.
#3 Georgia squeaks one out against South Carolina
#4 LSU bounces back from a near upset
#5 and #6 Miami and FSU go into overtime
#7 Michigan gets upset by Notre Dame
#8 Texas gets a close game against Arkansas
#9 Ohio State needs a 54 yard field goal to get past Marshall
#10 and #11 West Virginia and Florida get easy wins
#12 Iowa beats Iowa State by a TD
#13 California routes New Mexico State
#14 Kansas State gets smoked by Fresno State
#16 Utah downs Arizona
#17 Missouri falls to Troy
#18 Clemson is upset by Georgia Tech
#19 Auburn looks very impressive against Miss St.
#20 #21, #22, #23 and #24 all win easily
#25 Oregon gets upset by Indiana

I know I'm biased but I have to say the SEC definitely looks like the best conference despite what the "experts" say. Sure LSU nearly blew it but bounced back this week. Georgia nearly lost but I credit South Carolina with playing a great game. Arkansas nearly upsets Texas. LSU, Florida, and Auburn all cruise. Alabama looks like they are back. I can't imagine any conference has a better top 8 than Georiga, LSU, FLorida, Tennesse, Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina.

As a life long Irish fan, I am still in shock. They looked like the old Holtz team as they went down the field on Michigan and kept kicking the Michigan quarterback in the face. I will give the Wolverines credit they made it close with the touchdown and two point conversation at the end. I just hope this isn't a fluke win, I want to see Notre Dame back in the title hunt again which isn't all that delusional since I don't see anyone running undefeated now that Florida State lost to Miami. It should be a great season.

Michigan looked unbeatable in the first half, and Henne (a true freshman) looked pretty good with all that talent surrounding him. But then some Irish team that's different from the one that played the first six quarters of the year showed up and just ran wild. Quinn had over 400 yards passing, and there were 100 yard rusher and receivers for ND in the mix too. Notre Dame in the title hunt may be a stretch this year just because of their schedule - no FSU this year but there's still USC and Michigan State, which is always tough for them, and Purdue is just lighting people up right now. They could be BCS bowl contenders though; don't they have the Big East rule or something for the ND tie-in?

New coaches' poll (sports.espn.go.com) is out as well. Michigan dropped ten spots, but Notre Dame was and is unranked so I guess it makes sense. I had figured Miami would possibly move up to #4 since FSU was ranked, and LSU and Georgia played unranked teams, but it's still early. There are six ranked Big Ten teams, and Indiana's not just a basketball school right now. I wish I had opted for Akron/PSU tickets instead of the Purdue and Iowa games. Crap. x_x

I'm impressed that the WAC has two ranked teams(#23 - Boise State). I can't wait till we rumble into Boise State in a month and hand their asses to them on their ugly blue turf. Tha't's the next big challenge for the Bulldogs, and probably the only big one left this season, since we get Hawaii in Fresno this year.

K-State demonstrated yet again why no one can have any faith in them.
Somehow, Texas actually wins a close game against a rival. Still, Mack Brown is the last coach I'd want in a big spot.
LSU's QB situation concerns me. Extremely fortunate to get past Oregon State under the lights in the Bayou, and Oregon State turns around and gets wiped out on the blue turf at Boise.
As a ND fan, I actually thought they would beat Michigan prior to their loss to BYU. Michigan's offense didn't impress me against Miami(Ohio). After the BYU fiasco though, I was shocked that ND bounced back. Of course, why Walker wasn't inserted in the BYU game should be questioned.
As bad as Mack Brown is coaching in a big spot, Chris Rix is worse playing in a big spot. When Brock Berlin looks good in comparison, you realize Rix does suck.
The way the conferences look, it appears a showdown between Oklahoma and USC appears inevitable, as Georgia or Miami would need to run the table and hope for upsets to get in the National Title game. Law of averages says we are due for a 4 way controversy.

I was shocked when I got home from dinner and saw the score. We left near halftime and with Michigan firmly in control of things. Yikes.

The SEC would be the best conference, but they still have my UK Wildcats in it and they are dragging things waaaaaaay down. Ugh.

You're probably right, I don't see Georgia (or any other SEC team) going undefeated, maybe not even a 1 loss season. I don't have much faith in Miami either. But it could be a 4 way controversary because Utah and West Virginia could both go undefeated and get (rightfully) left out.

You know if I wouldn't pencil USC into the title game just yet, if the same Notre Dame showed up this saturday, USC may finally get the upset. ND can beat USC in the Collusium and has in the past with a title on the line, 1987 for example. Notre Dame could have had a fluke win against Michigan, but part of says they maybe legit.

I hate the BCS, ND should be 25, they beat a top ten team something that no other unranked team did. I am almost missing the biased southern newspapers and semi-retarded coaches.

I don't like USC. However, look at the schedule. Oregon and Oregon State have been exposed. At BYU could have been a challenge, and then BYU goes and get blown out against Stanford. California is a good team, but it is a payback game for USC and it is at the Coliseum.
'87 Notre Dame knocked off USC in South Bend, doing well until they collapsed down the stretch, culminating with the Texas A&M disaster in the Cotton Bowl. '88 was when Tony Rice with the #1 team in the country knocked off Rodney Peete's #2 USC. This current team is not anywhere near the '88 team in ability. And, Holtz owned USC. Willingham has been destroyed the past 2 years against USC.

Did Fresno State lose their running back in the Kstate game? I think I read that somewhere. He's a good player, that has to hurt. They shouldn't have had him in there so late.

It was an excellent week for College Football, I agree. I saw the last few minutes of regulation between Miami and FSU and the OT portion, as well as parts of Michigan/Notre Dame (didn't see THAT one coming) but I mainly watched the Ohio State/Marshall game. After a game like what I saw, I'm surprised the Buckeyes went UP in the Coach's Poll. Not to say that Marshall's a lowly team but geez, Ohio State was struggling against Marshall for parts of the game. They gave away 4 turnovers to a defense which stopped 'em for the most part and it was surprising that Marshall had several times they could've taken the lead or added more points but they couldn't do it, including the missed field goal. Still, just amazing game.

Not surprised ND isn't in the rankings yet. Yes, they beat Michigan but I doubt the Coaches and AP are gonna give 'em much credit until later in the season if they manage to win more of their games. Besides, ND lost to BYU as well so that might affect their standing.

And in answer to SlipperPete's question, yeah, Fresno State lost their running back Dwayne Wright, for the season too. That's really bad considering his performance was great up to the injury in the fourth.

Yes, Lloyd Carr's crappy playbook strikes again. I can only assume ND knew every play before it happened since I did, too. And on my first ever trip to South Bend. What a disaster. U of M deserved the 10-place drop, too. That makes 5 road openers in a row that Michigan has lost. Luckily, most of the Big Ten sucks, so Michigan still has a chance for a good bowl.

Purdue looks frickin' unbelievable, though. 110-7 in two games and 9 TD's from Orton? Holy s**tballs!

What's really sad is that Carr's performance wasn't even the worst of the weekend. I think that honor has to go to the idiot at Marshall who decided to try and play for overtime without looking at minor factors like How much time is left on the clock? or How many timeouts does Ohio State have? or Isn't that the best college kicker in the nation over there on the other sidelines? At least give your team a chance to win instead of coaching against them.

As for Purdue, watch out. I was really afraid that this was the year that the Boilers' bubble would burst since they lost 8 defensive starters to the NFL. I expected the return of the old days when Purdue would manage to lose some of those 59-56 games where the defense seemingly let the other team score so the offense could get back on the field. As it turns out, against admittedly weak competition, the offense has more than lived up to their part of the bargain while the defense has been really, really impressive.

Kyle Orton, best college QB in the country. If his defense plays even half as well as they have so far this year, Purdue will be in the thick of things for a BCS bowl and Orton will win every major QB award. He really is that good. He's got all the tools, including a cannon of an arm, and is also quite smart. I really expect him to be a high first round pick next year.

Tim

Yeah, we lost Dwayne Wright on a 64 yard swing pass in that game, which sucks, but, he gets to use a medical redshirt this year which gives him two more years of eligibility, instead of just one. It's a loss, but I've liked Bryson Sumlin better since last year. The Bulldogs are pretty deep at RB, so they should be able to overcome this injury.

Crappy playbook or playing too conservatively? I thought the playcalling in the first half was pretty good, and the WR, Edwards, just caught anything that was aimed somewhat towards him. Just looked like Carr was happy to sit on his lead and run out the clock, but when ND started their comeback, it was a little too late to regroup. The ND pass rush in the second half was pretty impressive and really kept Henne off-balance. I respect/like Lloyd Carr; he manages to reload to remain a top tier team year in and year out, and he's not afraid to put the best players on the field, regardless of class year (yes, I know Guiterrez is hurt).

If you want a crappy playbook, please feel free to take ours (Penn State's) because I will respectfully disagree when you say "most of the Big Ten sucks". I see six teams ranked right now, and Indiana winning when the ball is not round. Sure, they'll all beat each other out of contention (except Purdue) once conference play starts, but on paper it's looking like a mostly strong conference.

The best part of this past weekend, for me, has been the new system for calling penalties. I like that they're announcing the number of the offending player, just like it's done in the pro's. For one thing, it makes it easier for someone without a good grasp of some of the less common penalties to see exactly why the flag was thrown. The announcers aren't always the best at pointing that out. "Yep, there's the shift," has never been all that helpful.

Uh, how about crappy conservative playbook? Edwards actually dropped three passes which is wholly unacceptable for a Michigan receiver, especially one who begged to wear the coveted #1. Michigan threw about 2 deep passes and about 11,000 WR screens - of course Edwards caught one of those and promptly got drilled for a 5-yard loss.

Yes, 6 teams in the Big Ten are ranked but, aside from Indiana over Oregon, we're not talking quality victories here. Besides, when the hell has preseason rankings meant squat?

However, I would respectfully decline your offer to have Michigan trade playbooks with Penn State. PSU's playbook is major key in helping U of M beat PSU each year.

RSN, so with you on K-state, year in and year out they get the benefit of the doubt by the pollsters but they always screw up something royally. At least they got it out of the way this year.

South Carolina started strong but Georgia kept cutting away and eventually won... Clemson totally messed up at the end of a game. In the final minutes they had the ball with inches for a first down then they can run out the clock. Of course they didn't get it, went for the punt screwed that up and Georgia Tech recovered and win.

Real crazy college football week!
