With the realignment coming up, I thought it would be interesting to see who you think will win the divisions. Especially since there's 3 divisions now - trying to snag a playoff spot becomes a little more difficult since there's now 5 open spots after the division winners instead of 6.

So here are my picks:

EAST---
Atlantic: New York or Boston.
This one is really hard to predict since all 5 teams look rather mediocre.

Central: Detroit.
After the Sheed trade, they went 20-5, IIRC, and they added even more frontcourt firepower in the offseason (provided McDying stays healthy of course. :)) I would've said Indy but I'm not sure Stephen Jackson is who they need right now.

Southeast: Miami.
Provided Shaq stays healthy, there's no reason the Heat don't win the WEAKEST division in the NBA.

WEST---
Pacific: Lakers.
SAY WHA??? Hear me out, the Kings are declining; I'm not sure what to make of the Suns; The Clips and Warriors aren't even in this convo. Even with an aged frontcourt (I assume Malone returns to LA), they actually HAVE a frontcourt which the other 4 teams don't really have. Gotta go with the Purple and Gold here. If Malone doesn't come back, then it's a tossup between them, the Kings and the Suns.

Northwest: Minnesota or Denver.
Denver's frontcourt is freakin' SCARY now but they still have no shooters. The Wolves didn't really do much but they don't have a frontcourt. Utah might make some noise and I don't think Portland and Seattle will be that good so gotta go with either of these two.

Southwest: San Antonio.
As awesome as Logo is (and as their new jerseys are also), I just don't think the Grizz are good enough to topple the Spurs yet. RoboTim got him some shooting help in Brent Barry and that might have won them the division, providing RoboTim doesn't crash again.

Yeah, it's still a little early and the rosters aren't finalized yet - but this is something interesting to mull over though.

I have to agree with most of your picks. If Payton plays in Boston I have to give the edge to them in the Atlantic. If not, then I agree it's a tossup between NY and the C's. Midwest is still Minny's to lose, despite Denvers inprovments. Pacific I think is a tossup betwen Sacto and Lakers.

A month before training camp and two months before the season, so hell, I can at least be able to forget these picks before they even start playing.

East
Atlantic: This division winner will be mediocre if they play lights out. Since I despise the Knicks, Kidd will be out until December, I think Iverson's body is wearing out from the punishment, and Vince Carter is never healthy, I'll take the Celtics by default, with a 40-42 record to get the 3 seed.

Central: Detroit is the champ. Until the champ loses, they are the champ.

Southeast: Without Shaq, this division is actually worse than the Atlantic. Miami, clinching the division by March 1st.

West

Southwest(or, its proper name, Division of Death): Hornets finish last. That might be the safest bet all season. I don't trust Dallas, and I'm not sure if Memphis can get to the next level. Spurs are the obvious pick, so I'll take a shot with the Rockets winning the division.

Northwest: Minnesota. They've broken through the mental barrier of not getting out of the first round. Also, I wouldn't be shocked if Denver took a slight step backwards.

Pacific: Last time I saw Kobe play without Shaq for an extended period of time, the team sucked. Chris Webber is on the downside. The Clippers are prepared for the annual Elgin Baylor Day parade in scenic Secaucus in May. The Warriors are almost as bad as the Clippers. Thus, I'll take the Suns.

Bah, the Pistons are the champs, but I think we'll still win the Central, in any case. We'll have to see what we can do against 'em in the playoffs, though-- hopefully we can pull it out this time, and get better luck injury-wise.

I'll take the Knicks in the Atlantic and the Heat in the Southeast to complete the Eastern Conference division winners. And I think the Bobcats will be better than everyone expects.

The Rockets are a good pick to win the Southwest, so I'm going with them as well. I'll take the Timberwolves in the Northwest, and the Lakers in the Pacific-- just because the Pacific's going downhill fast, and the Lakers at least still have enough good players to win that division.

Personally, I think the C's are going to be better than most people think, with or without Payton. I sorta like it that most people and the so-called "experts" don't think so.

Pistons got a little better, Indy got a little worse (Harrington is better than Jackson, IMO). While I think the Knicks could contend for the Atlantic, it's no sure bet. If anything, as much as the c's are underrated I think the Knicks are that much overrated. Looking at the other teams in the southeast, Miami should still win that division even if Shaq misses half the season. Bobcats will have a year that most expansion teams have (25 win range).

EAST---
Atlantic: New York
What a horrible division, they win be default

Central: Detroit.
They are the champs, they deserve respect for top spot in the Central even though Indy is going to be tough.

Southeast: Miami.
A weak division, the Heat with the addition of Shaq should run away with it.

WEST---
Pacific: Sacramento
The Lakers decline will be much more than the Kings. Won't be suprised if the Suns come out and hint for a Division title

Northwest: Minnesota
I like The Wolves here, Denver's alright but I'll take the Wolves in the season

Southwest: San Antonio
There's a few upstart teams that will battle. I really don't know what to make out of Dallas any more, so I'll go with the faithful Spurs

smark/net attack wienerville advisory is raised to ORANGE alert - High (Benoit lost the title to some punk kid named Orton, lets look at the positive at least it's a heel not named HHH who has the title, which allows two fresh faces battling for the World title.. whaat? excuse me? what happened on Raw! well scratch that... Davis would do very well at UAB. He's a genuine nice guy who was just a bit over his head starting out at Indiana.
