The Hollywood reporter is stating that Joss Whedon will take over the X-Franchise while they move the start date to the Summer of 2005.

I love Joss and since he scripted a few lines in the first X-Men, I don't think he'll be out of his element. It does suck Bryan left the franchise and maybe taking Stewart with him to play Jor-el. I just hope they can sign most of the X-Men back, because I'd rather see X-Men 3 than Superman any day of the year.

Joss Whedon currently writes the flagship X-Men comic book "Astonishing X-Men". I haven't read it, but the reviews have been quite kind to Whedon.

I'm interested to see what he could do with the films.

While Astonishing is the best-selling X-book right now, I don't know if I'd call it the flagship over Uncanny.

That said, Joss would be an interesting choice to do the film.

Joss wrote the original script for X-Men. (Before it was re-written, doctored, etc. One of the most notable bits of his kept was Wolverine & Cyclops's dialogue at the Statue of Liberty.)

Then again, another that made it through was Storm's quip to Toad. So they even out, wouldn't you say?

Granted, I've heard Whedon's defense of that line...but it doesn't hold water because Storm never makes quips like that. Very OOC.

Personally I feel Bryan Singer and his production crew abandoning X-men is bullshit. Hopefully they will be able to get all the main cast to return despite Singer's departure. Though it looks like X-men could very well suffer a similar fate as the Batman and Superman movies.

Though can Mr. Whedon save it from the change of Singer's production company, and the fact that they will be confronting the Phoenix Saga. Which I fuckin' hate to no end, up there with Claremont's writing. Which made X2 such a pain to watch, based on a Claremont graphic novel (one I own incidentally), and then having to deal with... the fact that there will be a Phoenix Saga (and mind you Saga wouldn't have been my first word for that joyous romp in craptaculartude) movie.

That being said, I didn't mind Alien: Resurrection so much, it did have Ron Pearlman after all so that could be why. But unless I am way off, Whedon wrote that one didn't he?

My question is will we finally see Gambit in this one? I know his real name was mentioned in X2, but it's about time we got him on-screen.

Fuck Gambit, what about the REST OF THE ORIGINAL CAST?!

I mean, will they be able to get back Stewart, McKellan, Jackman, etc. without Bryan Singer and his crew around? From what I understand, Singer won't even be producing this film, so I want to know what his leaving is going to mean to getting back the actors.

I thought I had heard Jackman WAS coming back, but I cannot cite a source. Though I wouldn't mind if they got a better Cyclops, I mean there looked to be a gap of at least five years between him and Famke Jansen.

Myself, I'd say that if they can't get most of the original cast back, they just shouldn't do the movie. X-Men and X2 were so extremely well-done that if X3 sucked, a lot of fans would just be livid.

Those credits aren't exactly fair, since Joss only co-wrote Toy Story and Alien: Resurrection, and to hear his take on it, not much of his work ended up in either final script.

I dunno, I'd be really interested in seeing Whedon actually get a budget and get full studio support behind him to see what he could do. There are enough X-Men that haven't really been explored yet (Colossus, Gambit, X-Man, Havok, Bishop, Jubilee, Juggernaut, Angel, Beast, etc.) that you could almost build a totally new cast around Jackman and go from there. I can't imagine that Marsden, Janssen, Paquin and...uh...kid who played Iceman have anything better to do, so they'd be up for it. If Halle wants out as Storm, that's fine, she didn't bring much to the role anyway.

But they really need Patrick Stewart. If Joss can sell him on a good script, I see no reason why he wouldn't want to come back, especially since he'd be getting a big fat paycheque. As for McKellen, well, X2 sort of implied that he'd be back, but he has been the villain in two movies thus far. If they focused X3 around the Phoenix saga or brought in villains like Exodus, Juggernaut, Mr. Sinister etc. then they wouldn't really need Magneto. I just hope the series keeps up the high quality of the first two films, and they can eventually get around to doing a movie about Apocalypse.

I thought I heard, during the making of X2, that the cast was signed up for 2 and 3.

McKellen's stated numerous times that he'll be back for X3 if they want him, Singer or no Singer. Plus, most of the the young cast were signed to multipicture deals on X2. Paquin, Marsden, Janssen, Daniel Cudmore (Colossus), Aaron Stanford (Pyro) and Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) are all signed up, and you'd think Jackman would want to return to a safe-ground franchise after the disaster that was Van Helsing. I don't think they'll have too many probs reuniting the cast-its whether or not they can sustain the quality over a story arc as unwieldy as te Phoenix Saga that bugs me.

Once upon a time in China, some believe, around the year one double-ought three, head priest of the White Lotus Clan, Pai Mei was walking down the road, contemplating whatever it is that a man of Pai Mei's infinite power contemplates - which is another way of saying "who knows" - when a Shaolin monk appeared, traveling in the opposite direction. As the monk and the priest crossed paths, Pai Mei, in a practically unfathomable display of generosity, gave the monk the slightest of nods. The nod was not returned. Now was it the intention of the Shaolin monk to insult Pai Mei or did he just fail to see the generous social gesture? The motives of the monk remain unknown. What is known, are the consequences. The next morning Pai Mei appeared at the Shaolin Temple and demanded of the Temple's head abbot that he offer Pai Mei his neck to repay the insult. The Abbot at first tried to console Pai Mei, only to find Pai Mei was inconsolable. So began the massacre of the Shaolin Temple and all 60 of the monks inside at the fists of the White Lotus. And so began the legend of Pai Mei's five point palm exploding heart technique.

Hopefully Marvel will learn from this and sign their actors/directors to sequels from the jump (which also tends to save money).

Weldon's Astonishing X-Men is a really good example of character driven writing , especially how he handles the interactions of Wolverine, Cyclops, Emma and Kitty.

Angel was film for X2. There were scenes that showed Cyclops imprisoned during his "reprogramming" during which he talked to some guy in the next cell. Eventually, the "guy" is revealed to be Angel. His and Marrow's X-Rays are also on the wall in the scene where Wolverine enters the adamantium chamber.

I'd really be stoked if they have Iceman freeze over in this one. And if Weldon is directing, you can be sure that you will see plenty of Collosus (who they just let his resurrect in the comics).

And Personally, I think the Phoenix Saga is one of Claremont's best runs. He and Byrne didn't want to kill Jean, but rather give her a psychic lobotomy that would render her forever powerless, but editors told them that they had to kill her becaue she was (a) too power (the Thor of the X-Men they said) and (b) had to pay the price for destroying a galaxy. It was a great story of love, seduction. and sacrifice. We'll have to see how they pull it off, especially since there has been no mention of the Hellfire Club.

As I recall, a lot of Claremont ideas that go shot down when he was writing (get rid of Professor X, kill Wolverine and resurrect him [as the Hand's master assassin for a year], the Twelve) were put into motion by the editors and subsequent writers with lackluster results.

According to Singer, the scenes with Angel were never shot and were in the script only.

Well, you'll see that when Serenity comes out next year.
