Cool...a fellow amateur vexillologist! Hell, I've been a flags mark since grade school...many moons ago.

And why is nobody talking about the Greeks' design for the stadium Olympic torch? Good God, it's a f*cking BLUNT! I mean, I know everybody in Athens smokes (sez a Green Bay Press-Gazette article last week), but DAMN! The thing's long and white, a little fatter in the middle and tapered at both ends...

...with the top tip blackened. From a standing vertical, it TIPS DOWN, the dude w/ the hand torch sparks it up ("Thanks for the light, dude")...

...and the blunt moves back to vertical! What the f*ck!?

One thing that irked me about the tease for the Men's 200m is they hyped Thorpe, and they hyped Phelps, but Pieter van den Hoogenband, who won the event in 2000, got no promo love. I half-expected him to pop up somewhere in the middle of the hype, pull a Kurt Angle and be all "Hello...Olympic Gold Medalist over HERE!!".

I realize it's just N-B-freakin-C, but still...it's not just Thorpe and Phelps that'll make this a hell of a race.

Thats part of the Olympis crap I hate. Remember when Michele Kwan won the silver, and Tara Lipinski got the gold? They interview them both on CBS early show or something and the basically kept asking Kwan about LOSING the gold, but never congradulated the Tara who actually won the damn thing.

Oh, and would somebody PLEASE send a memo to the sportcasters and writers around the globe that this current USA mens basketball team is NOT a "dream team". LeBron James, Stephon Marbury, Carmelo Anthony, and Amare Stoudemire do not equal Jordan, Bird, Malone, Barkley.

And, please, Bob Costas, choke on something hard and sharp, so I never have to hear YOUR opinion on things. Try just simply REPORTING for a change.

Edit = Change 'that other chick from the USA' to 'Tara Lapinski'

On the flip side, whichever network had the last Winter Olympics nailed that year's figure-skating coverage... though Sarah Hughes made their job easy that year.

Was that meant to be sarcastic? I tried watching part of the US coverage of the opening ceremony but Costas was so condescending, I had to change the channel after about 10 minutes. Thank Dobbs for our Canadian broadcasters!

I've learned something watching subjective sports this year:

Failed dives and messed up gymnastic routines are funny.

Point in theory: Take the 3m Synchronized Springboard Diving final today. I was in Master Control at the station due to a meeting going on, so I got to board this. Boring for the first four rounds -- and then it happens. The Chinese, who are really good, fail the dive. I mean, like one of enters the water more-or-less on his back.

Then the Russians screw up. The Americans? Have a chance to get gold with an 8.0, but they choke. Everyone except the Grecians. Plus, the guys that won qualified on merit, and not the "host country" exception.

P.S. --- I wish hard news that isn't violent would strike the games (i.e. someone big getting busted on steroid violations); all this soft news on Today is getting to me.

The reason the U.S. lost in '88 wasn't because of college players. It was because John Thompson was/is/will always be a lousy big game coach. The only reason he won a National Title is because he caught the break of a lifetime and had Guy Lewis coaching the other team, a bigger choker than Thompson.
As for the Globetrotters, at least they might hit a jump shot.

Perhaps they just need Lisa Leslie, or her advice.

Bob Costas is probably the single biggest blowhard I have ever heard in my life. Just report. Thats all I ask. Same reason I have begun skipping Monday Night Football, I am tired to death of Al Michaels blabbering on about whatever gets stuck in his head, and not just calling the game.

If I had a blowgun with some poison darts, I would use them all on Bob Costas.

Just because Bob Costas craps on Vince McMahon doesn't mean you have to crap on his reporting. He's doing a fine job over there.. as always.

...and I KNOW most of you are against Costas for 'THE INTERVIEW' so don't try playing it off like you're not, you bunch of smarks.

I'm JUST saying!

Is Bob Costas doing anything more than just the between events reports on NBC? That stuff doesn't seem too bad, it's usually over and done within something like 5 minutes. Even then, it's a nice chance to see what else is on TV. What really drives me crazy are the announcers who feel the need to talk over the events that really shouldn't be talked over (i.e., gymnastics). I don't mind them making comments like, "Here's where he lost his concentration in the World Finals in February", or explaining the way things are scored/minor errors. But to just go on and on while they're on the routine seems pointless - especially when they just renumerate their points during the replays.

But beyond the announcers, what blows my mind is the amount of empty seats at most of the venues they've shown. Some of these things are the finals (gymnastics, diving, crew/rowing) and they've got entire sections that are empty.

I've been enjoying the Olympics thus far. I didn't get into the Volleyball/Beach Volleyball stuff until this year and I find that I like it a lot.

Bummer about our Men's Basketball Team.. but I think the main thing that happened here was that a lot of countries focused on their Olympic basketball teams and raised them to a higher level. I mean, come on... It was almost shameful to see our previous Dream Teams whup ass like they did. I'm sure a lot of teams just went to the drawing board, upped the ante and now we see this version of the Dream Team struggle. Thank goodness we did win today to stay in medal contention.

I'm a fan of gymnastics, so it's good to see the Men finally medal this Olympics. Glad to see Blaine Wilson get one his last Olympics. The Hamm twins are beyond words. Even though Paul is supposed to be the better all around, Morgan ain't too shabby either. The only thing that bothers me is I can't get Paul Hamm's voice out of my head. It's really creepy. I thought it was a teenaged girl. Just real creepy.

I'm loving the swimming events, but I'm also tired of the "Michael Phelps Show". I'm not a negative person, but I thought him chasing after Spitz' record was stupid. He's working himself hard and I appreciate it, as a fan, but he keeps running into the brick wall that is Ian Thorpe. This man is awesome. I haven't a bad thing to say about him, but it was great to see the guy who wasn't Phelps, Klete Keller, outreach him today. My heart almost stopped because I was way into this relay.

The Women's gymnastics team took the silver... so close, but it's still all good. I tuned in and out on this, but what's up with the Russian, Svetlana Horkhina (sp?). She's awfully skinnier than I remember her and I watch gymnastics during the non-Olympic years too. Maybe it's just me. Anyway, good job by the American Women.

The Opening Ceremonies were all right to me. I wasn't totally into the theatrics, but that's what remotes and other channels are for. The Parade of Nations is always great to me because Bob Costas LOVES to show his ability to correctly pronounce each nation. But I give him credit, he's good. Katie Couric had a time with a few, but I think I would have had one too.

Overall, I like everything.. Now, if only they could take Elfie Schlegel and Tim Dagget, gymnastics commentators, because they drive me up a wall.

I noticed that during the gymnastics, the 'cheap seats' were empty and the more expensive ones were full. Could it be the cheap seat ticket holders go upgrades so as to make it look not so empty? Answer is obvious, but damn... it's like going to a middle school/junior high sporting event.

The Greeks are refusing to paper the arena, claiming that it wouldn't be fair to those who paid such high prices for the tickets in the first place.

Edit: And Cerebus, I've never seen "THE INTERVIEW" (tm), so my dislike of Bob Costas is purely based on his body of work for NBC.
