He didn't completely destroy Benoit at all. Benoit dominated a good portion of the match and Orton had to use rope breaks to get out of Benoit's submissions and he hit a desperation RKO.

That's hardly destroying Benoit.

The seeds of the Evolution breakup have been planted for weeks. Remember Triple H talking down to Orton after the Battle Royal and Orton not interfering in the Ironman Match later that night? Triple H bailing on Orton last week on RAW?

Orton goes over clean, Benoit does the face-face handshake and Orton accepts then celebrates like a face. Seems like an angle to make Orton a full fledged face.

He's been getting cheered since BAD BLOOD when he wrestled Shelton Benjamin.

The face turn would be when Evolution attacks him. And the ass-rape of a finish completely destroys Benoit, I didn't mean Orton dominated the match.

Ass-rape? What are you talking about? Orton hit a fluke RKO and pinned Benoit. Two guys wrestled evenly, one guy one. The same Orton who's gone over in everyone of his programs (sans Edge) for a little under a year. Some ass rape. An ass rape of a finish was when Undertaker pulled up John Cena last year and then beat him.

Benoit was the bigger man, showing that Orton earned his respect. You're really worked up about this and there's probably 10 better examples from the past 6 months of Benoit being made to look bad then losing to Orton and showing him respect. Why shouldn't he have done that? Orton was man enough to beat him on his own. Something Triple H couldn't do.

You mean like at SummerSlam 2002 when the HEEL Brock Lesnar pinned the FACE Rock clean in the middle of the ring after kicking out of all of his finishers?

Touche, but Benoit is not even close to the celebrity that Rock is. Rock could job cleanly in every match, eating every finisher from the RKO to the Money Shot, and he'd still be a main eventer. All I'm saying is that Benoit could have used a *little* protection. Lord knows they've protected the likes of Austin and Undertaker and HHH for their entire careers.

Yes, and Benoit was just another guy he steam-rolled, he was the top face and he still couldn't stop him. If it wasn't ass-rape, it was at least an unwelcome grope.

BTW, anyone notice the wigless Molly tonight? She didnt look so bad, but she didnt have to wear so much lipstick for a game of dodgeball.

And, Orton being face would of been better if Triple H lost. Then he could have a reason to want to get out of Evolution. The only storyline I could see for a Orton face turn would be if he tried to take over Evolution since he is now the champ and they beat the crap out of him. That would lead to Triple H vs Orton. But WM 21 is too far away, so I dont see the face turn completely happening til at least the Royal Rumble.

Now that Orton is the champ, can we PLEASE give this man his own theme song? Triple H, Ric Flair, and Batista all use their own individual theme songs when they have a singles match, so why cant Randy have his own?

Benoit did well working over Orton's arm, then screwed up on the tope and hurt his neck. Orton did good and worked over the neck so that when/if he'd hit the RKO, it would've been over no matter what.

SummerSlam thoughts:

Opening match was decent, but it needed more Rey Rey. I'm sorry, I'm not really buying Spike as a heel....Matt v.s Kane was shockingly anti-climactic. I figured on something big happening. And someone needs to teach Lita how to run without flailing her arms and legs....Nice to see the Cena/Orton interaction. They're the future of WWE....

Booker T. v.s Cena was surprisingly short. I gotta admit, I wasn't paying attention to the "best of 5 rules" so I thought it was best of 5 TONIGHT. I was surprised when they left the ring after the match....Planting the seed for Eugene to Smackdown! perhaps? I figured tonight was really the end for that character, but if he goes to Smackdown, it might have a little more staying power....

The triple threat was too short, and too much of "one guy resting on the outside". I know most triple-threat matches do that, but I noticed it alot more here....Angle v.s Guerrero was a strong match. Especially considering the condition of the participants....Trips v.s Eugene was okay, didn't expect a classic, so it was fine. And it had FLAIR~!....When the diva contestants ran out, I immediately spotted no Carmella. Strange....

JBL v.s 'Taker seemed too long. And the gimmicked limo was too obvious....Real good main event. And nice post-match handshake....I hated the crowd, too. I knew Canadian crowds were a bit..."different", but this one took the cake. Really unnecessary at times....I was not real impressed with the PPV. Thumbs in the middle, leaning down (TM Scott Keith).

Because the purpose is to make Randy Orton into the top face on RAW so he can headline WrestleMania against Triple H. You may hate Orton with every ounce of hate you have but that's where they're going and if that's where they're going, Orton had to go over Benoit clean.

You know what would have hurt Benoit more? A bunch of silly ref bumps and sledgehammer shots and then going back to the midcard to feud with nobodies (Angle, Jericho, RVD, Booker) when HHH got through with them.

Wait and see where they go next with Chris Benoit. Being on top for 4 months certainly won't hurt his career. He'd been beaten by everyone and their grandmother before then anyways.

Chris Benoit's career and overness hasn't been defined by how he's been booked. It's been defined by his attitude, his work ethic, and his talent. In losing, he did what every wrestler should do, PUT THE OTHER GUY OVER.

The matches that were won by the heels needed to be won by heels. As long as Angle has been gone, he couldn't lose. If Eugene had beaten HHH, then there'd be no reason for him to get revenge (and when you make the heel look like the underdog, the crowd cheers). JBL and Taker couldn't have pinned each other (so I don't know why they even had a program with them in the first place, however I thought their match had been the best one up to that point on the card). The main event could have gone either way, but Randy Orton has so much steam right now they might as well see where he can take the World Title. I think Benoit did all he could as champion. He kept the ratings stable through the summer (something that hasn't been done in years), soldified himself as a main eventer, and brought someone else up to his level.

I couldn't really hear the crowd since I went to a bar to watch it and they didn't have the sound turned up loud enough. Everyone in the bar popped when Orton won. Other than that, the faces and heels were cheered and booed accordingly (except for Kane-- they liked him).

Jericho was hardly in a position as a "huge babyface" for that show. Benoit and Eddie Guerrero won their matches and stood victorious in the center of Madison Square Garden while confetti fell from the sky. What, do you want ALL the babyfaces to win? It was their night and was recognized as such.

If you know Orton's winning, do you need JBL and Angle to win? I'd argue Angle needed this one badly, but JBL could have lost it, and won it back on SD!

Angle didn't need it any worse than Guerrero did, really, but that's part of what made it fun. They both needed a win and wrestled like it. JBL losing to Taker only to hotshot it back on Smackdown would've been a waste of time and hurt his heat, I think. I believe he's improved, but they're walking a real thin line with him as is. They can't risk that so quickly if they're going to try to get through November or something with him on top.

Or maybe the booking should be done in a fashion that one of the biggest show's of the year does not need to be dominated by heels.

Absolutely. But I think they DID need to do it. With Angle, you tie up Guerrero at least another month. With JBL, you extend his reign, which is only a month-and-a-half old and hangs on that thin line. With Orton, you're starting a new era on Raw, and he's the first heel champion on the show that isn't HHH since the title was created. And in addition, they teased the idea of him turning with him being so happy to win, showing respect to Benoit, and shaking his hand.

Orton potentially turns the Raw main event scene over a little bit, especially if Edge goes heel. There are really only so many times you can run a combination from Evolution v. Benoit & partner as the main event of Raw before you're really just getting stale. They badly needed to get away from Benoit v. HHH (sometimes v. Michaels! sometimes Michaels v. HHH!) in the main event too.

It's hard to believe when you think about it, but five months, week-in, week-out, grows tired in that five months, and having Orton on top, whether I think he's ready or not, and whether I think he was the guy to go to at this point or not, was as worthwhile a gamble as any. JBL didn't hurt business, why would Orton?

They obviously weren't going up with what they were doing, so why keep on doing it? Chances are they're going to stay stagnant no matter what they do, but it's worth a shot since clearly no one is going to hurt them enough that business can go down. The chances they've given guys like Guerrero, Benoit and now Orton are the types of chances WCW was cursed for not giving anybody. There's a little to like about it all, I think, though I concede there's plenty to not like about a show where pretty much all the heels win. It was certainly deflating after a while.

The crowd killed this show for me. It made it hard to stay interested on my part. And despite Benoit's crazy bumps the Main didn't do it for me. Randy has to step it up a bit now that he has the belt. I shudder at face Randy thinking of the previous incarnation.

He does... He comes out to it for nearly every singles match. And I say nearly only because I've missed a few matches, so therefore don't know 100% for sure. He's used his theme music since before Evolution's current theme was introduced. It's very similar to Evolution's theme and has no lyrics. But once he splits from Evolution (assuming that's the case), he'll probably get his own theme. On the topic, does anyone expect some other wrestler to replace Orton if he leaves Evolution?

The Rush/Toronto connection is probably more just a coincidence. There aren't too many other current songs just released this summer that mention "summer" in the title/chorus. I thought it was a nice change from the usual hard rock Drowning Pool-ish songs that are used for PPVs. And I don't even like Rush!

Is Rey Mysterio still sorta injured? I am surprised they haven't been using him very much lately, as well as during the Summerslam match.

Now...it's pretty clear you guys weren't big fans of the crowd.

I just got home after spending 5 hours on a bus this morning, and 5 hours on a bus coming home...from the most fun I've ever had in my life.

The crowd was amazing. Most of what you saw was being inflicted by this group of about 6 guys sitting about 2 rows behind my friends and I. The wave was actually attempted about a half dozen times before it worked. They got the clue to count down from 10 rather than 3.

It was downright amazing as a fan to be part of the bizarro crowd. I threw everything I knew out the window and simply followed their lead, EXCEPT for JR whom I booed mercilessly.

The JBL/Undertaker match was something else, and one I'll never forget... Very little of what was chanted during that match was directed at the wrestlers - but it didn't matter.

Ultimately, the goal of the WWE is to have a satisfied crowd, and you best believe I am SATISFIED! I've never had fun like that. Everyone was jazzed and pumped to just go out and make as much noise as humanly possible and I'll never ever EVER forget this day.

Everyone in the crowd had fun. It wasn't just me. I sense 20,000 people who will definitely be around no matter how bad the business gets.

Four SummerSlam thoughts:
1)If crowd reactions kill a show for you, mute the audio and go with the closed captioning. My feeling on the crowd was, at least it's a full house.
2)I can't believe that there is any question about the Diva dodgeball game. This is wrestling, of course it was worked. By the way, do the diva wannabes get a PPV Payoff?
3)At the moment, I don't have faith in Randy Orton as Champ. It's not that I dont' buy him as Champ. It's my questioning his ability to be the number one guy. Can he carry a poor worker? No. Can he improvise well? No. I hope he does improve, and working with Benoit at house shows will help.
4)Eugene. I just don't know what to say. King's commentary is disgraceful, insulting, and unwelcome.

Just another guy? Steam-rolled? Huge portions of the match were dominated by Benoit. Orton won it with a fluke RKO out of nothing. Randy was crying his little eyes out with joy at the end. You think that conveyed the impression that this was just another guy, just another fight? It was a really good match which was booked to confirm Orton as being able to hang as a genuine main eventer, while reaffirming Benoit as a damn strong fighter and a classy guy to boot.

Frankly if your assertion that Benoit was 'destroyed' in the eyes of most fans thanks to last night is correct then he has absolutely no place main eventing in any case. I mean for Christs sakes the guys been booked as utterly unstoppable since Survivor Series. He made the unstoppable monster Brock Lesnar tap out. He went on to beat the snot out of Lesnar, having Brock hide behind chair-shorts and contract clauses to get away from a guy who was clearly shown to be his superior.

He then went on to enter the Rumble at number one and went through absolutely everyone and finally forcing The Big Show out at the end to win it. After that he went on to the biggest fricking Pay Per View event in history and went over both the number 1 face AND the number 1 heel in the company, making HHH tap out for the first time in his career. He then went over both guys AGAIN at the next ppv, this time making Michaels tap. After that he beat Kane not once, but twice, making even him tap out on the second occassion. And then to top it off he had HHH's number in a 60 minute Ironman match on RAW.

Thats almost a year of domination. Like I say, if he can't survive a clean loss, especially one in which he controls much of the match, after all of that he has absolutely no right to be main eventing.

Its great that you enjoyed yourself, really it is. But that crowd made for really crappy television. Like it or not, the reactions of live crowd are hugely important to how the show transmits to us back home. Last night the crowd went way past cool/edgy (a la NY) and into the realms of suckitude. I mean it came across at times that they really couldn't give a shit about what they were watching. As someone sat in a country that was overlooked for this ppv, and hasn't seen hide nor hair of a meaningful event in donkeys, thats pretty annoying. Even more so given that we may well have missed out on some storyline progression (eg Lita turn, Heidenreich run-in) on the ppv because they were worried about the reaction it would get.

Genuinely glad you enjoyed it, but it didn't help me do likewise.

The problem w/ Orton winning clean is that there was essentially 2 weeks of build-up. He wins a battle royal, has 2 tag matches, and suddenly he's able to cleanly pin the champ? And that's ~1 month after losing the IC Title, as well as losing the rematch, to a guy who's not even ME-level.

I know they're hell-bent on making Randy a top guy (I don't like it, either), but would it have killed them to have either:

1) Benoit win the 1st match due to being the wily veteran and Orton being the young, inexperienced guy who makes some mistakes, then having Orton go over in the rematch due to the added experience, or...
2) Orton wins due to Evo interference, with Orton doing the "I don't need your help, I'm my own man" build to the rematch w/ Benoit, where Orton would get the win.
